Rumour: Sony prepping new PS3 SKU to combat hackers

Rumours suggest Sony may be working up to the release of a new, “hack-proof” PlayStation 3 model.

An anonymous source told Everything HQ Sony is “already deep into plans” for a new SKU in response to the recent leak of Killzone 3 to torrent sites, in the wake of the system’s root key publication and subsequent custom firmware.

The new, Slim-style model will allegedly feature a 300 GB hard drive and a price tag of £186.99.

Recent retailer discounts in some territories have fuelled speculation that Sony is planning an official price drop on PS3 hardware, which Everything HQ suggests may be an effort to clear existing, hackable stock – although putting a bunch of cheap, hackable consoles into consumer hands doesn’t seem the wisest counter-piracy strategy.

LOL! That site/blog was created just to write that news and to have it approved on N4G, which it didn’t because anytime one of these random blog/sites come up they write news like these and claim that they have a “credible and anonymous source” and just disappear after that.

@1, smart remarks, in that time GEOHOTS doesn’t exist, in that time….

All hell broke lose when Sony removed “Other OS” from the console, and GEOHOTS is born…

Ok, but what about current users? Will Sony update the firmware in order to protect legal consumers from anything harmful that may come from these hacks?

@5, I think so, they should do that, otherwise gamers will step over to Xbox that simple

@5 aslong as ur not doing anyg illegal with ur ps3 you should be completely fine anyway

i gotta say this would be an apsolute perfect move by sony, a slimmer cheaper ps3 and sony will own 2011,i allready know a few people who were die hard xbox fanboys make the switch because of the exclusives this year.
And considering the size of ngp which has near enought the same power as ps3, could we be talking wii size?

uh no, it’s the same size as the slim model, but with a 300gb hdd and a more secure firmware.

Oh great, I can’t edit my comments.

Anyway, #7, haven’t you read the news about how the hackers can ban PSN accounts at will?

In case you haven’t noticed, 360 was hacked years ago.

Ok Sony put a bigger HDD and BC back in along with a price cut. And people will go crazy.

So £186.99 is pretty much $300 AUD so I’d be astonished if we don’t have a price drop in hardware too, despite the fact that we pay well nearly 100% more for the games, the hardware seems to be pretty much the same price.

@11 i bet Nitendo Wii is hacked too??, yes i was aware that Xbox was hacked, just because of uncle Bill Gates, and Microsoft being hacked since Windows 3.11

@9, have you read that article properly? :)
they would need your console ID and the only way they can get that is through you, not through Psn

and the only way the can effect you in any other way is through custom firmware

Well, I certainly hope the price is true, at least.

I don’t understand why they would downsize the HDD size, since the actual “big” PS3 has a 320Gb drive…

@17
Economics possibly. When you go out to get a big fat bulk order of HDDs and you can save a fair bit if you go for 300Gb rather than 320Gb then you do it. Could also just be an approximation, or useable space, or the whole thing could be a load of cobblers :-) .

I’m leaning towards the ‘cobblers’ thing.

Sony should have released the new SKU without telling anyone, and kept the HDD the same.
This way someone will buy a new PS3, try to hack it, then its blows up in their face and the police are summoned.

So sony will be releasing again the phat model, you know the lunch one, the one that came with the option of other OS, nice….

@18 I too am leaning for the cobblers opinion, given that 300Gb drives don’t exist at all.
