Peter Molyneux to receive BAFTA Fellowship

BAFTA’s just confirmed that Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux is to recieve the BAFTA Fellowship award at this year’s Gaming BAFTAs.

It follows on from an announcement last month which confirmed that Molyneux would pick up the Lifetime Achievement award at GDC next week.

“I remember back in 1967 watching the first BAFTA awards on television with my family and seeing them being so excited about those accolades,” Molyneux said of the honour.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would be possible for me to accept one of the greatest honours the entertainment industry has to offer.

“My first thought on learning that I was awarded an Academy Fellowship was that to be in the company of some of the greatest talents the entertainment industry has ever seen is truly humbling and secondly that this is an award not just for myself, but for all the people I’ve ever worked with.”

“We are delighted to be honouring Peter at this point in his long and successful career in video games,” said BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry.

“He is one of the leading figures in the development of video games as an art form and an inspiration to the next generation of creative minds.”

Molyneux’s been in the game’s industry business for 24 years, creating such franchises like Populous, Theme Park, Syndicate, Black and White and Fable whilst at Bullfrog and Lionhead.

Last year’s recipient of the Fellowship was Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto.

The BAFTA Game Awards take place on March 16.

So, they promise him an award but when he turns up they give him a turd in a box? Only joking! (Sort of.)

I find Molyneux somewhat over-rated in recent years.

Good stuff. Richly deserved… well, at least for his stuff before being broken in the salt mines.
