Report: THQ to resurrect Voltron

Everyone's favourite giant-robot-made-of-robotic-lions may be on its way back, if there's truth to THQ's publication of multiple games based on the eighties cartoon and toy franchise, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Variety reports that THQ has partnered with Voltron rights holders World Events Productions and licensing representatives Classic Media.

Details are extremely scant, extending only as far as releases in northern fall, and that the games "build" on the plot lines of the original cartoon series.

We contacted THQ but were advised that its "not providing any comment".

A new animated series will apparently launch simultaneously. Mattel is reportedly set to release a new line of toys in a separate deal.

Voltron was a collaboration between US and Japanese companies to develop a quasi-anime property capable of selling oodles of toys and merchandise on both sides of the Pacific. It worked. It might well work again.

Thanks, Joystiq.
