GameFreak shoots down Wii Pokemon RPG, says core series will “always” be portable

The part of us that’s still ten-years-old is crying right now. Look what you did, GameFreak. Look what you did.

When asked by IGN about the possibility of a Wii main series entry in the Pokemon franchise, GameFreak co-founder Junichi Masuda replied:

“I don’t think so. I think the Pokemon core series is always going to be with handheld hardware, in the future as well.”

“I consider handheld hardware you can carry around with you as almost being equal to being with Pokemon, always. I think handheld really matches the idea of Pokemon that we have. Also, you can communicate and transfer data all the time, whenever you want with a handheld. That’s also a match with the Pokemon concept.”

Granted, that doesn’t mean home consoles are being completely left out in the cold. Masuda added that consoles are perfect for “parties, and those sorts of things.” “Maybe in the future, if we can think of a way to do something cool with that, then that’s the sort of environment we can work in,” he explained.

Pokemon Party Babyz. It’s inevitable now. Consider even the mere possibility, and never know happiness again.

    Keep the JRPG on portable devices, I don’t care, but why neglect the home console owners? I’m sure a well crafted 3D RPG could do well on Wii, instead of the kiddy/party shit we only see, least good pokemon game on a home console was the 2 Stadium games.

    I would honestly be up for a proper Pokemon title on the home consoles than the portables. I’ve been curious about it, having loved Red and Yellow on GameBoy as well as playing Stadium on N64 at an old friend’s.

    They could simply just pick a random game, put it on the large screen, give it 3D graphics & make the battle scene like Pokemon stadium, couldn’t be that hard, just give us a few exclusive features, customizable character, advanced online features, split screen even. The franchise has so much potential for a proper RPG.

    No, I think the whole concept of Pokémon only really makes sense as a handheld game. It is, after all, about ‘pocket monsters’.

    I think most people would be happy with a decent Colosseum game on home console. The Wii one was ridiculously restrictive – all they need to do is transfer the battle system wholesale from the portable titles, allowing players to use their collected ‘Mon to fight it out on the big screen.

    Anyway, as I’ve said elsewhere, what Game Freak needs to do next is to create an AR Pokémon Snap using the 3DS camera.

    In Japan it’s called Pocket Monsters for a reason. All they really need to do is a decent stadium style game for home console, with added on foot exploration, ye don’t need a full RPG, I think it’d actually detract from the series’ popularity and the pick and play nature of the games.

    Completely agree with #4, what happened to all the added stuff and proper connectivity in Battle Rev over the awesome Stadium 2, mini games, daily mystery gifts etc.

    It’s called Pocket Monsters because you catch monsters with pocket balls (hence Pokéball) that you store in your pocket, game has nothing to do with the console being able to fit in your pocket.

    Screw “pocket monsters,” when I was 12 and in the midst of the Pokesplosion, I wanted an action RPG for N64. You encounter wild Pokemon or trainers while wandering out in the world (or in gyms, of course) and then you go into a battle arena based on the landscape you were just walking around in. Choose a Pokemon and then you control it (kind of like Smash Bros. but 3D) and run/jump/fly around with the agility you would expect based on its attributes. You can do basic weak attacks with B, but each of the C buttons has one of your four moves assigned to it, which draw from your PP meter (a regenerating pool like mana). You have to get up close for melee blows, but ranged attacks have auto-aim and can be dodged depending on the attack (maybe a leech seed could be avoided by a speedy Pokemon but a thunderbolt would be a near instant hit).

    You get the gist of it. They could totally do that and people would love it, even if all they did was convert Red/Blue.

    Since I can’t edit, I will add: It’s basically injecting the fucking awesome real-time battles you see on the TV show into the game. It sucks watching two Pokemon bouncing around like pinballs and then bashing into each other with sparks and fire going everywhere, then being stuck with the static back-and-forth “fighting.” Pokemon Stadium was okay, but it was still the same shit, your Pokemon just stands there trading blows until one of you dies — I don’t even know how many times I fell asleep playing that.

    Well you say that, but the game was called Pocket Monsters, because it was a handheld game on a device that would fit in your pocket. The game was made in two versions to promote connectivity and play where ever and when ever with who ever. The whole emphasis of the series has been about sharing, trading and playing (wants wifi/local co-op play).

    In short Game Freak started off as a magazine in Japan, Satoshi visited Nintendo and came up with the idea of Pokémon after seeing the newly developed Gameboy Link Cable. and imagined bugs crawling from one gameboy to the other (Satoshi being a bug catcher). The idea was purely about having monsters in your very real pockets to share with you friends. The name Pokémon came about from Japanese fans and retailers shortening the name Pocket Monsters to Pokémon. Nintendo later started using this themselves too. When they finally released the game in the US, the name Pocket Monsters had already been copyrighted, so Nintendo opted to use the name Pokémon.

    As for the keeping Pokéballs in ye pocket, none of the trainers in any game does so, they’re generally stored on a belt or bag.

    They’re originally called Monster Balls in Japan, when the name Pokémon started becoming used in a more official capacity, they became known as Pokéballs. Just as many items in the Pokémon universe has the term Poké placed before it. Just as an example, I really doubt Pokénerds are found in people’s pockets. -_^

    That’s nice, but it hasn’t stopped them from making spin-offs before. If they can come out with Pokemon Snap (actually not a bad game), they can come out with an action version of the RPG for the console.

    Still not sold the traditional Pokémon RPG would work that well on a home console, but as ye stated an action RPG could work very well. Personally I’d say the Pokemon Ranger games would make a good choice for a more action RPG formula, would prolly improve greatly over the DS games too.

    Why can’t they release a game that goes on both portable and home? like they used for heart gold and soul silver they had that pokeball thingy you could put one pokemon on. Why can’t we use the portable game like that, use the portable like a Stadium to take your pokemon any where with you or carry on the RPG game. Then when you get home you transfer the pokemon or your progress back to the home console to play RPG again.

    We transfered pokemon to the home console before why can’t it be the other way around?

    And now with Wifi we can trade as well as battle on home console if that is one of their problems.
