DICE: Adjusting Frostbite for consoles prevented Bad Company 1 release on PC

DICE’s general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson has said that if the firm could have released Bad Company 1 on PC, it would have done it; however, tweaking the Frostbite engine so it would work on consoles was the main concern at the time.

Speaking in a video interview with Game Informer, Troedsson also said that if DICE could do it all over again, the firm would have released BC1 on PC as well as consoles.

“The reason it has taken us so long to do a sequel to Battlefield 2, is we felt with the introduction of the new consoles like Xbox 360 and PS3 we needed a new big step when it comes to technology,” he said.

“We needed the new Frostbite engine we developed for Bad Company 1, and by doing that we spent all of our effort into making a game that used the whole range of technology within those platforms. It was quite an undertaking… and was also one of the reasons Bad Company 1 wasn’t released for PC, actually. This was something that if we could have done it, we would have done [things] differently. But it was a major effort just to get it out and get it working.”

Troedsson goes on to say that what makes DICE unique in the industry is its “drive for quality.”

“It’s every important for us that everything we do needs to be of high quality”, he said. “You can call it some kind of pride in what we do… We really take pride in making sure that people not only buy the game… but are also happy with the purchase and feel good about the community that they have bought into and the longevity of the product, that we take care of them post launch. Quality is a key motivator for us here.”

Battlefield 3 releases this fall for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

PC owners shouldn’t feel too gutted; after all, they’re going to get the definitive version of 2011′s premiere multiplayer online FPS.

It’s important that everything they do is of high quality? Pull the other one DICE. Your last good game was BF2, everything since has ranged from poor to kind of good.

Yeah right!

More like they thought that they could walk in and take the number 1 spot from CoD4, so that’s what they focused on, leaving PC gamers at the back of the queue while they went for the big bucks…

@7 That would be a valid point, if you had anything but you own biased perspective to back it up. After all, I’m not the one coming into a thread wearing my tinfoil hat loud and proud right now. You are.

Gaming does not resolve around Call of Duty.

they were trying to attract console gamers since console BF2 modern combat didn’t sell better on consoles.Bad co. made impact on console gamers during
that time DICE tweak engine to support PC.

But that didn’t stop Pc gamers from crying in Ea forums about BC1

They’re broken. Its a pretty well-known problem in the game, see this:

^ And even that video isnt quite right when it says the hitboxes are ok on still targets. There are loads of instances where a knife will hit, blood with come off but it wont kill. Or you’ll shoot at a still target and either the hits wont register or they wont count as a head shot when you hit an enemy in the head.

It affects all versions of the game to.

@12 – just to follow on from that. Hit boxes behind rocks or in between trees can be a joke.

On the NEW Operation Hastings map, if you start at the base closet to A, there is a slop and if you sit there between the trees, you cant fire to the left side near the bridge because the bullets cant pass between a 5ft gap!

Lets not forget the Mortar Strike that was fixed for vanilla BC2 but is again broken for Vietnam, and my favourite – the bullet proof leaves

Pfft. Yeah, well if I could be bothered to search, I’m sure it wouldn’t take me very long at all to find a whole load of quotes and articles during the build up to release of both BC1 and BC2 where DICE boast about how utterly amazing their game is and how CoD’s time will soon be up.

You know, the exact same obsessive, lack of respect, snobbery that we’re all going to have to put up with from now (or even a few days ago) until the release of BF3…

Now they’re just trying to put a spin on history, as though CoD never happened, and that they’ve been focusing on gamers’s needs all along.

It’s insulting.

Honestly, after such a botched job on their other games i dont expect much for BF3. If its as unpolished as the games they’ve released since BF2 then it wont be worth it.

I thought BC2 was amazing (in MP) and 2142 is something I actually enjoyed massively. BC1 had a good SP but wonky online (weak weapons) but BF1943 was fantastic too. I’ve been playing BF games since the first demo for BF1942 which was about 9 years ago now. Sure they do play up the whole CoD/BF rivalry but it just seems like they are trying to make a better game each time.

Although they do have a severe issue with making a good server browser, even the PC version of BC2 had a disastrous browser. Then again if you work with Gamespy that’s what you should expect to happen.

I wouldn’t ever say they botched the job. I mean MW2 had some terrible bugs with all sorts, like one man army noob tubing, holding rockets back so when you die you kill everyone near you, over-powered perks, kill streaks contributing to kill streak counters, those fucking double shot guns. Black Ops is worse with it barely working half the time. I’m not having a dig at CoD here, just pointing out that yes, BF does have some terrible issues, but CoD does too. Both of them need to up their game a lot.

@14 – totally agree. After the shabby BC2, I wont be touching another DICE game for a very LONG time. There simply is no excuse for being a lazy developer but so many are (not just DICE), who cant even get the basics right.

the game looked good but the engin is far from been ready for use..
the engine is so hard to use that DICE say thay not gonna release
the SDK for MODS in BF3

and guys keep in mind and DICE said it befor
the BF2 guys didnt made BC1 and BC2 it was a new team of DICE
thay announce BF3 long long time ago and said the real DICE ppl are working on the new engine so i still got some hope it will look good
but with SDK not gonna be release it will be hard for a lot of old guy to come back to the game…
