Confirmed – Activision chops Guitar Hero and True Crime, no music or Hawk games in ’11

Wednesday, 9 February 2011 21:30 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Activision’s just announced it has canned development on True Crime: Hong Kong as well as “disband” the Guitar Hero business unit.

It said in the financial release for its full-year fiscal 2011 financial report that “due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”

On True Crime, it added that it would “stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong. These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.”

In a statement on its website, developer United Front Games said it was “sorry” it did not finish the project.

“We are sorry we did not get a chance to complete this project with Acitivision, but we understand why,” the statement reads.

“We are both committed to doing quality games and nothing less. Maybe we will have a chance to work together in the future, but in the meantime we are setting our creative sites on a different horizon.”

Furthermore, Activision COO Thomas Tippl has just confirmed in the company’s financial call that no Tony Hawk games will be released in 2011 as well as other music titles from the company, meaning no DJ Hero sequel this year.

It follows according reports from GI and Eurogamer that GH and TC would be canned outright with layoffs at DJ Hero developer Freestyle Games.

GI also claims that the publisher will now focus on three of its key brands: Call of Duty, StarCraft and World of Warcraft.

BioWare developer Manveer Heir, who used to work at Activision-owned Raven Software, also claims that Vicarious Visions has suffered layoffs.

True Crime Hong Kong was looking good! Y cancel?

  8. Aimless

In Guitar Hero‘s case it’s more like the game’s finally stopped struggling.

Surprised they aren’t pushing True Crime out given that it must be close to finished. I guess they’ve so little faith in it they aren’t even going to bother attempting to recoup their investment.

Seriously? Three whole franchise, two of which aren’t even technically Activision’s?

I’m finding this entire story a real stretch. Why the hell would they cancel True Crime: Hong Kong anyway? The game was looking amazing.

While no one will miss the GH series much nowadays, why cancel a good looking game like True Crime? They say the fans wanted it, they give it to us and now only months before the game’s released they cancel it?

Yeah, fuck Activision. The last of my cash to them went with Black Ops and I sold that piece of shit. And I call that a 100% positive win. :)

I don’t see the big deal about True Crime. It looked like a generic TPS game to me, just like the original.

Maybe I’ve missed some crucial videos or some such, but the stuff I saw looked pretty awkward and boring.

The fact that they moved it into 11 pretty much means that it was a long way from done, which is sadly a theme with Activision. Prototype had the same problem.

They could be trying to send a message to shareholders that they aren’t going to release a game that’ll only make half its money back, when they can simply cut it off, reduce their expenses, and go for bigger franchises.

But that’s all speculation really. Regardless I don’t think it’s a very good idea to bet on a handful of franchises, even if they’re golden for a good while yet.

Wonder how long before they start making console spin offs with the words “….Craft” in it?

I see a NEW action adventure(rpg light) based tps of War/star Craft heading out in a year or two.

And yes a new CoD every 8months.

If they were smart they would have doing a Diablo III day and date for PC/PS3/xb360. But this is acti, they are too smart. Obviously.

True Crime had been delayed for ages and looked kind of crappy anyway, I’m not really surprised about that. Guitar Hero is more surprising, I guess last year’s model just wasn’t worth the effort. The arse has sort of fallen out of the music game business.

So basically we’re just going to get Call of Duty games from now on, then? Awesome. Well done, Acti – you have messed up good.

@29: eh…Prototype 2? Perhaps. Which is with some other character in the lead, and has no more, and probably less interest in it, than True Crime HK had. If they said P2 had been ditched, then that’s not such a bitter pill, because they just showed a trailer, release date…But, TC: HK was on it’s way, I expected it would be shown big at E3, and launched shortly after. But that ain’t happening now. Sad day.

Ghost? Why wouldn’t that reappear, if they do as you suggest. I can see it becoming a console download game, honestly. There must have been a lot of hammering and moulding and work done to that project between the years and teams, only ever officially shelved, that they could probably use, or adapt.

@46, I agree, ActiVision has the bad habit of putting all their eggs in the one basket. Acti tends to milk their franchises til they’re completely dry & then they continue milking til they rip the nipple off before Acti works out that they have gone wrong, yet they continue to make the same mistakes with other franchises.
I personally think the industry needs a drastic change, there’s no longer any room for ‘just good’ games but we also miss out on some classic gems.
