Battlefield 3 boss: “You don’t kill CoD by trying to be CoD”

Sunday, 6 February 2011 19:52 GMT By Joe Anderson

Battlefield 3 gameplay designer Alan Kertz has taken to Twitter to reveal more on the game, saying the way to “kill” Call of Duty is to make a “better shooter”.

Kertz said in the Twitter Q&A session that “you don’t kill CoD by trying to be CoD. You kill CoD by making a better shooter.”

During a Twitter Q&A session, Kertz also said it’s unlikely there’ll be a server browser for console versions of the game, which probably means due to technical reasons this will be cut the number of players from 64 – confirmed for the PC version – to 24, although Kertz wouldn’t confirm or deny these figures.

Kertz also gave some further details such as:

  • You’ll be able to lie down on the job
  • MoH MP and BC2 used the same weapon and FOV systems… BF3 is an upgraded version
  • Destruction is important for DICE, as is visual quality and vehicles.
  • Consoles will be able to get the Limited Edition too.
  • One of the cities is Tehran.

An image leaked yesterday giving some details on the Limited Edition version of the game, which will  release alongside the standard version this fall on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

The first Battlefield 3 teaser trailer hit last week, as did sparse details on locales and multiplayer numbers.

The game will be shown for the first time at GDC in San Francisco at the end of this month.

#1 don’t be sure about that :D.. Black Ops failed everyone.. and the MW3 is going to fail again with Raven working on the multiplayer.. Raven is a crap company for MP, they’re good only in Single Player.
Anyways.. I bet Battlefield 3 is going to own COD this year! after they underrated Bad Company 2 and they were totaly wrong with that
most of the people are going to buy BF3 this year I got a good feeling about it :D

The one thing i liked about BF2: Modern Combat’s Single player is that you were JUST a soldier, your guy was replaceable, if you died, you became just another soldier, parachuting your way into the fight, I’m getting sick of the idea in fps lately that you & your squad are invincible despite being just soldiers, it’s probably why I didn’t enjoy Badcompany 1 & 2, I guess what i’m saying is that i want the story to be told through the war/battle itself, not a typical invincible squad.
    Also i loved hot-swapping :D

I think this is where THQ fails, they always set out to beat the best, with Space Marine they expect it to beat Gears, with Homefront they expect it to beat CoD, with Dark Millennium they expect to beat WoW, with Saints Row they expect it to beat GTA, now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure all of them will be great, but THQ always sets their hopes too high.

He’s quoting Ricitiello pretty much word by word, but he’s just as right about only beating CoD once you make a better game.

I’m surprised that no one has been able to so far. Although I do see CoD taking a major hit with the next few iterations.

@20 Felt like a completely different thing to me.

Different setting, different engine, different weapons, less twitch gameplay.

This game has FAIL written all over it.

When are EA ever going to learn that this unhealthy obsession of their with CoD is pathetic.

I’m quite certain that this game will do ‘good’ for 6 months, then DIE.

Just like BC2 and all the rest of EA’s useless, one trick pony ‘CoD killers’.

The sad thing is that they’re being encouraged by a meagre handful of underdog championing wierdos on the internet, who are upset because they’re complete FPS n00bs.

Yes & being good at a game of CoD is such an accomplishment (Your mum must be proud), that your opinions are superior to everyone else… you’re such a tool GHZ.

  31. G1GAHURTZ

    What I am is irrelevant.

Fact is, I’d probably beat you at any FPS you want to go for, but so what??

Your ad hominem nonsense doesn’t change the fact that BF3 will FAIL, just like every single other EA ‘CoD killer’ has FAILED.

You can get hyped for an AVERAGE game all you like.

Actually, watching these goldfish-like reactions is quite funny.

You’ll probably be saying the exact same thing about some other ‘CoD killer’ FPS next year…

    LOL!

    #31 4 years ago
  32. Crysis

CoD is a very, very basic arcade game, it uses the same fps formula that has been around for well over a decade, nearly 2, but overall, it’s mediocre, when someone wants to beat CoD, they are referring to sales, the game involves running around like a headless chook shooting whatever moves with the occasional camper, that’s all there is to it, there’s fuck all strategy, fuck all teamwork, fuck all explosions, no destruction, no vehicles, in what way is this a ‘modern’ game? I give CoD 4 some credit for being graphically ahead of most other games at the time, but that is all, this is just my view, Battlefield is a far superior game in all these aspects, but i don’t take my games too seriously, sure winning is always good, but unlike some, i play for fun, not competition, i find that a little sad tbh.

    #32 4 years ago
  33. G1GAHURTZ

Your opinion of CoD is entirely your business. I have no problem with people not liking the gameplay for whatever reason.

What I do have a problem with, is people mistakenly thinking that going on a non-stop CoD bashing campaign is going to change anyone else’s mind.

The fact is that there is no way in the WORLD that this, or any other game is going to beat CoD until it can convince people like me (long term CoD only players) to put CoD down play that game instead.

To be perfectly frank, you won’t do that with explosions, tanks or destructible walls.

It’s people like me that EA needs to convince, not people like the ones on here are already day 1 buyers.

I’d snatch your hand off for a better game than CoD, and I’m sure that the double figures of millions of regular CoD players would do the same.

If EA can do this, they would have truly beaten CoD.

So that’s what they should focus on doing, instead of getting into little group hugging sessions with the few noisy ‘anything but CoD’ fanboys on the internet and achieving nothing whatsoever.

You can stop swinging that hammer now Giga, you just nailed it :)

  35. Aimless

@33 I don’t think you’re the market they should be aiming for at all. Clearly you’re heavily invested in CoD to the point where you don’t want to play something that’s different, only iterative — not saying there’s anything wrong with that, per se.

The people EA need to court are the millions of more casual CoD players, a similar market to that which buys FIFA and Madden every year. Ultimately those are the people making up the bulk of shooter sales, not the relative minority that are highly competitive or frequent message boards.

Battlefield 3 won’t be the game to do that, of course. I think the series is fundamentally too intimidating, even the Bad Company branch.

    #35 4 years ago

@GIGAHURTZ, “I’m quite certain that this game will do ‘good’ for 6 months, then DIE.

Just like BC2 and all the rest of EA’s useless, one trick pony ‘CoD killers’.

    Thats exactly opposite :D

When new CoD comes out, old one dies by the year and DICE continue to support old games and they live through the new generation (Battlefield 2 is still going strong)
You can watch statistics at STEAM if you want to :D

and no one will going to convince you to play it (i hope), we don’t need running and gunning gameplay here.

The Battlefield franchise in my opinion is the best of the best when it comes to the First Person Shooter. Great sound design, a wonderful attention to detail, and balance after the updates. Call Of Duty hasn’t involved skill since 2 and the second they added killstreaks it became nothing but cheap tactics and exploitation of the games faults. Battlefield presents camaraderie and teamwork and actual tactical gameplay that is much more than simple pointing and shooting. You go rogue in Battlefield you go dead. I’m thoroughly excited for 3 and I have faith that Dice will present us with an excellent product that is new and exciting given the new engine and will sell 10 million units (BC2 as a spinnoff sold for 6 million already) and for a tactical FPS thats a significant achievement.

EA just wants CoD money, but they won’t ssucceed and REAL gamers don’t care about SALES, they care about GAMES.

Thats it, who thinks opposite can suck his own penis playing Call Of duty again and again.

Although good things *can* be popularity, the popularity of something has never, ever been a testament to its quality. Be under no illusion. EA want to “beat” CoD, just like they managed to get FIFA to beat PES.

They want to have a higher metacritic, sell more copies, have more hours played, sell more DLC and make more money, in exactly the same way as they managed to with FIFA against PES.

They’ve failed miserably on each and every single one of those points.

No-one’s talking about music, or breaking even here.

If your aim is to “beat” something in the games industry, that clearly doesn’t mean making a product that the minority tell you is good, based on their irrational hatred of other products.

    #45 4 years ago
  46. Michael O’Connor

@45 It’s just dick-waving. This sort of tactic is surprisingly good for building interest.

Doesn’t change the fact that they’ve already made the better game. And I assure you, plenty of us think Battlefield is better simply because we think its better, not because if some irrational dislike of the “opposition’s” game.

I don’t understand why everyone picturing themselves in a league to beat CoD, while their game was always more intense and impressive experience than aforementioned. Look at BF2, the game needs no praise and still imo the best multiplayer team action shooter out there. You need to continue in your own direction and try to raise the bar by introducing new elements that helps elevate the franchise. keep talking about how u should beat cod is nothing but distraction and upsetting your fan-base. Yes, CoD created a strong fan base of people who mostly run n gun or camp, you created a new environment that if 20 ppl camp doesn’t change anything there are still 44 people out that can make the game balance and fun.

Battlefield always win cuz it’s a kind of game that people are required to participate in team play.

I can’t count the games I’ve seen thrown away in countless hours of playing BF2, either because someone wanted to camp out a specific node that they had apparently fallen in love with, or because they wanted to climb a nice big crane and take potshots at a couple of guys out there actually scoring points for their team.

I know a lot of people are so fanatical about their personal preference that they subscribe to this theory that people playing online are just so existentially different from one another by virtue of the game they happen to be in, but as a relatively sane person, I’ve seen absolutely no evidence of that in any free multiplayer game.
