Operation Flashpoint: Red River video takes you into Tajikistan

Codemasters has put out a new trailer for Operation Flashpoint: Red River, and it takes you along with the US Marines as they enter into Tajikistan.

Here’s a description of the video:

Set in 2013 in the new location of Tajikistan, the UMSC are sent in to defend American interests threatened by insurgency in the destabilised country. The video follows the Marines’ mission to secure a river dam, a vital part of Tajikistan’s vulnerable infrastructure. As narrator Staff Sergeant Knox informs us, their insurgent enemy is ‘entrenched and determined’ but ‘such an opportunity to win local hearts and minds is always worth a measured risk.’

Marines are shown facing down the insurgents, who fight a guerrilla war from the shadows and use their local knowledge to stage ambushes. Combining the different specialities contained within the four-man Fireteam, Marines sweep through compounds and towns, engaging enemies at close quarters and long range. Reflecting their role in a broader conflict as part of a large expeditionary force, they are shown in action alongside artillery, armour, air-support and additional infantry fireteams.

Watch it below.

While there is no set date for the game, it is slated for a Q2 2011 release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I hope there are more stealth missions in this game.i dont know why but there is something very satisfying about going through a mission for an hour and only having to kill one person.

@2 That was an awesome mission.

That’s really the ultimate disappointment when it comes to the new Flashpoint. If they would just let it sit in the oven and nurture the AI instead of pushing it out the door with everything “good enough” as enough, they could really create a monster.

At least that’s how you created impressive beasts in the past.

The main change i want out of this game is the ability to choose my loadout and customise the squad’s loadout.

I think the real problem is that a lot of infantry combat games aren’t actually based on infantry combat, but rather a popculture fantasy of it.

And somehow I just don’t think it’s as interesting to be an extra in a movie style game, as it is to be in a situation that seems real and needs to be dealt with, with real effort, rather than spray and pray and some rocket launchers.

Codemasters did some neat AI, but it arguably had a lot of snags in it. It’s one of the most expensive and demanding things to build for a game, and if we’re talking about a company vs company sized battlefield, then it’s a feat of titanic strength to make an AI that works across the board.

That’s why Flashpoint was rigid, which worked pretty well tactically because you had full control of a unit, and why ArmA’s AIs have been so clumsy in trying to be dynamic and simulate individuals functioning as a unit.

You have to find the right balance between a limited concept that you can pull off, while still creating the feel of something large and insane, like a real warfight.

As long as it plays similar to the last one i don’t really care about how it looks.
