Dead Space 2 review round-up: horrifyingly good

Dead Space 2 looks great and all, but let’s face it: It’s not always easy to trust reviews that barge onto the Internet shouting “first!” like they took etiquette lessons from, well, the Internet. Fortunately, the embargo’s up for everyone else, and now Dead Space 2 gets to face the music for real. So, how’d it fare? Is it finally ok to stop scrutinizing and start screaming?
In a word: yes. We haven’t seen reviews this unanimously glowing in quite some time. See for yourself after the break.

I don’t follow Famitsu. Their Japanese not saying that as an offensive thing but their culture with games are so different then ours.

For those that enjoyed the first one, it’s likely mandatory. For those that didn’t, it likely won’t sway them.
For the most part, I find the 9′s are overly enthusiastic. It’s a slog, and not the good kind. Cheap scares, everyone shouting expletives for no good reason, gore to satisfy pre-teens who think blood and cauterized flesh are signs of maturity, character depth is barely there (Isaac’s mental breakdown is conveyed as subtly as using a sledgehammer on someone’s shoulder to say “hi”), combat that still doesn’t feel right thanks to Necros spawning out of thin air behind me and clunky level design the developers thought was “smart” but can only be seen as such by “hardcore” gamers who think repeating the same last endgame sequence because of cheap deaths is fun.
In other words, fans will love it.
Visually it’s haunting enough, with a very good use of textures, lighting and effects. It’s still all very bereft of identity, though, with the most generic monster design I’ve seen in recent years (well, it’s certainly above that of, say, Quantum Theory, but that game’s so far below that it’s kinda cruel to use it as a measuring stick).

Meh to EG. After giving the original a 7, the same score as Alone in the Dark they don’t deserve the chance to give an opinion on the second one.

Seems like more of the same. The game is visually identical to the first one if playing both in the highest settings on a nice pc. I am a little disappointed. I saw 9 out of 10s and expected it to be a huge improvement on the (awesome) first game, but it really isn’t. Its still fun, though.
