Cousens backs rumour that PSP2 is as powerful as PS3

Codemasters boss Rod Cousens has backed up apparent Sony claims that PSP2 is as powerful as PlayStation 3.
Cousens, speaking at the 3DS launch event last week in Amsterdam, told Eurogamer that the notion that the next-gen handheld is as powerful as PS3 is “true”.
Cousins said: “In portable areas you’re going to have statements, which already out in the press, saying PlayStation Portable 2 is as powerful as the PlayStation 3 – which is true.
“So you’re going to get mobile devices as powerful as what were considered notebooks. I just think it gets bigger.”
It was reported last week that Sony has been telling publishers in the UK that PSP2 is as powerful as PlayStation 3.
PSP2 is yet to be announced. Sony Japan is to hold an event in Tokyo this week at which it is expected to show the hardware for the first time.
The meeting is to take place at 6.00am GMT on Thursday.
Nikkei reported over the weekend that the device will have built-in 3G and an OLED touchscreen.
VG247 published the first ever images of a PSP2 dev kit late last year.

This could be good news, but also bad. Devs are already complaining about dev cost for this gen for ps3 and 360 to have a handheld that matches power with them. That could mean understanding the kits would be simple or they could have more problems with making the games for the ps3 360 and psp2

@1 There will be no additional cost. There is such thing as upscaler.
some games maybe will require some cost, but i think in most cases games will be made by the first party with such investment. Multiplatform games will use texture sets they did before.
It’s not a problem.

So at the 3ds event he talks about the psp2 power… ROTFL
Ps3 power or ps3 looking graphics? A developer knows the difference, so is really the psp2 as powerful as the ps3?
Why isn’t 27 yet?

@4: I’ve read a lot about this, and it’s actually surprising how similar the PSP2 is to the PS3 hardware-wise. It’s obviously not going to be as powerful as a PS3, but it’s going to rofflestomp over the iDevices, which are the most graphically proficient at the moment.
I’ve been reading a lot of things about it which tend to leave me thinking ‘what?’. Still, it likely will lack support, much as the original PSP did, so it’ll take a lot of convincing to get me to buy one.

@1, Hopefully they can just port it over with a few inferior cosmetic changes
And unless they announce some brand new sony/toshiba created super small, multicore and ultra efficient cpu/gpu combination, I dont see how its possible it will be as powerful as the PS3.
Nevermind the fact that it would be impossible to keep something like that a secret.

Let’s hope this doesn’t mean insane launch price.
