Report: Nintendo World 3DS players suffered side-effects

Reports from last week’s Nintendo World event, the largest hands-on 3DS event since E3 2010, include troubling accounts of prevalent dizziness and eye fatigue.
Japanese magazine Friday claims that a “majority” of players experienced unpleasant symptoms after or during use of the 3DS’s stereoscopic 3D feature.
Friday spoke to a number of players who said they’d switched to 2D visuals within a few minutes of beginning play after suffering minor dizziness.
Half of those interviewed reported fatigued eyes, although some commented that holding the 3DS still can help mitigate strain.
Friday’s feature seems to be a lone voice among generally positive reception from Japanese press. The magazine is well-known for paparazzi exposure of celebrity scandal.

This doesn’t surprise me at all, I have the same issues watching 3D movies. I suspect staring more intently at a much smaller screen is only going to make that worse for me. And other people too, so it seems.
It could just be something you get used to over time, though.

I can tell you, that for me, it IS NOT something you get used to over time. Remember Virtual Boy? I bought that day one, and owned almost all the games for it. It made me extremely nauseated, with a couple of times of vomiting. I have also been in some 3D studies, and the smaller the screen I looked at the more sick I got, especially if the screen moved even the slightest and my eyes had to adjust! I even suffered Migraines that lasted for days.
For the 3DS you have to hold it PERFECTLY still or your eyes are constantly adjusting!! How many of you can hold your DS perfectly still? I can’t, and my wife can’t. Humans all have small tremors in there wrists when holding something like the DS.
It is very different in going to a 3D Movie..It is on a HUGE Screen, your not holding something small that is moving, and your seated still and not moving, like you will be doing with your stylus and hands. Even 3D movies give me a massive Headache though.
I suspect there will be all kinds of 3rd party 3DS Holders to hold it perfectly still.
There is no way I or my wife can play the 3DS without getting sick. I can’t imagine sitting down and playing a Final Fantasy or Zelda game for an hour or more.
And if you turn the 3D slider down to 2D, then what do you have, an expensive DS. I understand there will of course be exclusive titles to the 3DS, and by the time there is a good library, I will look at it again.
For those of you who can handle it…go for it…LOL! Though I seriously doubt Nintendo Fan Boys will be honest and tell you the truth. I recommend you buy it at a place you can return it with-in a month or so. Trying it in the store won’t help. You need to be at home setting down and give it a 45 minute to 1 hour game play, and then see what happens either right away, or over the next couple of days!

Even like that, people will still buy it massively… only to realize that they can’t use the 3D function without being sick… so they’ll switch to 2D… and won’t notice they “just” have a DS

Well, a substantially more powerful DS with motion sensing, a larger internal memory, always-online capability and a bunch of other features which set it apart from its predecessor.

@6 : the WHOLE point and marketing approach of the 3DS is…. 3D ! (it’s even in its name).
If people want a more powerful console, they’ll stick with PSP or rather PSP2.
What annoys me is the fact Nintendo will sell largely based on “look, it’s the first 3D non-glasses console” when, in the end, many (most ?) users won’t be able to use its 3D function without getting sick/having side effects.
I DEEPLY regret the fact that most companies ONLY want to sell a product now, even if it doesn’t work… and consumers, as a mass, totally fall for it (see the 360 and the RROD story : I know no one who still has its original 360, yet people continues to buy/replace their console… or the Wii-fit, who’s got what ? 4 games made for it ? With most customers putting the controller in the cupboard after 1 week of use)

The 3DS is more powerful than the PSP.

@7 – I wholeheartedly agree.
It pleases me to hear about these problems with the 3DS. I was running my mouth off months ago about why the hell we need a 3D handheld in the first place. It’s a sh1t, gimmicky idea, brought about simply to milk the existing DS crowd for a few more million. When I hear people getting genuinely excited over this it makes me want to punch a baby.
Nintendo need to up their game in the hardware stakes and stop releasing wave after wave of cheap gimmicky tat.

@ 9 : I am talking about about the product marketing approach on the 3DS. That is what they keep pushing in their press releases “look it’s a THREEDEE handheld”… and that, still, if most people get sick because of the 3D and THEREFORE can’t use it, it’s totally stupid.
I am not saying 3D is a good thing (I don’t have a 3D TV nor do I plan to have one in the near future and 3D gaming doesn’t interest me) and I agree with you on the fact that, just like the DSi (how many games using the camera in the end ?), Nintendo is just trying to milk customers !

@10 Yes there is a slider to turn the 3D off to 2D, but whats the Point??? The Extra Price you will be paying for is for the 3D!!! When it has been out for a while there will be a ton of games for it I am sure. Heck everyone I run with gets Sick from 3D and the ones who don’t get sick get a Massive Headache, and that is from Big Screen Movies, or on their 3D TV’s, can’t imagine what a shaky little 3DS is going to do to people..maybe there will be a class action lawsuit??
Sorry But I wish the 3DS would have Never Come Out, at least not at this time. I would really like a New Home Console from Nintendo to replace my Craptastic Wii!! By now they surely could make a Cheap version of the 360 with its super cheap components in a New Next Gen Wii or whatever, since they now want to be a generation behind other consoles, now would be a PERFECT time to release a New Nintendo Next Gen Console..they would have a WHOLE year with no Next Gen Competition.

What’s with all the 3D hate here? Granted it’s gimmicky at the moment but most new features to videogames start out as gimmicks. Personally I think 3d makes way more sence for games compared to movies, as you are navigating within a landscape and require a feeling of depth more.
Even if some people are negatively affected by the 3D many others may not. At least it’s trying something different than just upping the graphical power of the console, new gameplay can arise out of this decision rather than just better graphics.
Finally @9;
Why does the idea of others being excited about this illicit such a response? Surely people can like stuff that you don’t? There is way better reasons to punch a baby, e.g the little bastard has sweets you want!

Well, I own a 3ds. I can honestly say that the people who are suffering these side effects are merely the same that suffer when watching a 3d movie. And LOL!!! to the people saying it’s just another ds with 3d! It’s much more powerful than the older DS’s! Allow me to explain from first hand experience. Full 3D games on the older DS systems had graphics equivalent to roughly the nintendo 64. Well, let’s look at the 3DS’s games so far. We have SSFIV, the character models look almost on par with 360 versions, backgrounds took a big hit though, but those character models would’ve been impossible on the older systems. Then we have Rayman 3D, guess what? It’s a direct port of Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast! The next game I’m looking forward to is the port of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which from what I understand from the previews and screenshots looks just as good as it did on the consoles. I’ll just leave with this quote (and a link):
“All things considered, the 3DS is a pretty powerful piece of kit sitting somewhere in between the Dreamcast and the original Xbox in terms of overall graphical performance. It might not be able to push polygons around on screen like there’s no tomorrow (less than PS2, GCN and XB), but with a range of impressive visuals effects made possible through the use of shaders, it doesn’t need to.”
