Unlock 3DS game content with exercise

201101113dspedo_gt

Is it any wonder we avoid Wii Fit when its only method of motivation is declaring us overweight every time we log on? The 3DS has a better idea; unlock exclusive in-game content as a reward for exercising. Goodness, Nintendo, that’s almost fiendishly clever.

Nintendo 3DS Blog reports that the 3DS’s built-in pedometer counts your steps as you trot about your daily business and reports them to the Activity Log, which hands out a virtual currency called Game Coins at its benevolent whim. Your hard-won coins can then be traded in for exclusive content.

There’s no mention of which or how many titles will support the feature, or how Nintendo intend to guard against the good old “sit there waving it in the air” exploit.

Thanks, D’toid!

I wonder if I can create some sort of device to simulate walking while I sit down and watch my money increase?

Perhaps some sort of a treadmill and hamster combination would work?

I predict the first wave of games doing something incredibly stupid with it by locking tons of content, and then in 1.5 years time it be settled down to use to unlock bonus character outfits or art work.

I always have my portable consoles with me when I go somewhere, so this is a wonderful idea.
