Interview: Uncharted 3′s cinematic lead, Taylor Kurosaki

Uncharted 2 proved to be something of a lifeline to Sony when the PlayStation 3 console was still finding its feet. A blockbuster hit which managed to snatch limelight (and the lion’s share of accolades) away from the Modern Warfare 2 juggernaut, the title not only was an accomplished demonstration of software engineering, but also told a pretty mean story.
When Naughty Dog unveiled Uncharted 3 at an event in Hollywood a couple of weeks back, we took the opportunity to talk to the game’s cinematic lead (and Naughty Dog’s first hire back in the day), Taylor Kurosaki. The film-trained Kurosaki left Naughty Dog after Crash Bandicoot 2 released to work on music videos and commercials, but returned six-and-a-half years ago, stating “this is where all the cool stuff is happening.”

First look at Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in LA

Hollywood is a logical place for Sony Computer Entertainment and developer Naughty Dog to throw an event to unveil Uncharted 3 to games press. The series has evolved into one of gaming’s best examples of the interactive medium taking on film at their own game. In fact with Indiana Jones’ last cinematic experience verging on self-satire, there’s merit in the argument that Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake is a figure more sympathetic to modern times; the everyman adventurer.
The goal with Uncharted is to capture the feel of the classic action adventure movies but front them with a contemporary hero, states Amy Hennig, creative director. The 17 year-old games industry veteran has won recognition not just from games press but also awards from the Writers Guild of America for Uncharted 2’s storyline, and it’s clear from Uncharted 3’s presentation that the ND team is committed to continuing down the same path that saw Uncharted 2 move over 4 million copies to date and a slew of “best of” gongs.

Feature: What the hell happened to Tony Hawk?

Once upon a time, the Tony Hawk series was one of the biggest in videogames. If you listen to Metacritic, the Tony Hawk Pro Skater titles are some of the best games of all time, and every one of them was a runaway bestseller. At the beginning of the last decade – just after the release of Pro Skater 2 – the franchise was generating $250 million a year, according to figures from analyst Wedbush Morgan.
Last year, the year of Tony Hawk: Ride, franchise sales were closer to $100m. This year, Activision’s trying – failing – to flog $120 fake skateboards to children, whilst Activision publicly defends its abysmal sales.
What on earth happened, and why, when Activision is culling the likes of Bizarre Creations, won’t Activision finally shoot the Hawk?
