Phil Harrison believes it will be a “difficult challenge” for PS3 to match PS2′s sales

Sony’s former head of Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison, believes Sony has a tough road ahead if its to expect PS3 to match PS2′s record-breaking sales.

Speaking with Eurogamer in its PS2 retrospective chronicling the system’s 10 years on the European market, Harrison believes the “dynamics” today are “slightly different” as the market is much more competitive.

“I hope PS3 can match PS2, but I think the market dynamics are slightly different,” he said. “For a large chunk of its life-cycle, the PS2 didn’t really have any competition anywhere in the world, so Sony was able to sell a huge number of units. If PS3 does reach the same level it will take longer and it will be a more difficult challenge.”

Harrison also belies Sony’s ability to secure third-party exclusives for the system was more feasible at the height of its popularity, and it was “the last era” in which you will see console exclusives “happen in a meaningful way”.

However, SCE founder Chris Deering has faith in PS3, and is of the belief it will eventually “as many as PS2″ and maybe more.

“In the case of both PS1 and PS2, we sold more Slim units than original models,” he said. “The PS3 Slim has only been out a couple of years. If you could get a PS3 for a hundred pounds… Can you imagine? It could go much higher and last longer.”

As of PS2′s anniversary, the console has moved 146 million units worldwide, while its predecessor has moved over 46 million units in four years on the market.

The PS2 is the GOD of consoles the last of its kind. The slayer of SEGA and the humbler to Nintendo. PS2 will forever be the worlds best selling and greatest console to ever grace our universe.

(I say this before and after I wake up from bed everyday) :D

    P.S. Albo88 is a well known XBOT…ignore his ignorance

That’s because your Cheap Albo88. 300$ has been one of my best media investments ever this gen. By the time you get your asking price it will be at the height and death of the console. So, it would already have little worth when you buy it. Just chalk up the euro already its worth it

You can make credible arguments either way I think. PS3 is no way near a mass market price point, yet they’ve still sold 42 million

Hey, as long as PS4 has a vagina and a pair of floppy titties, we’ll be set then.

    Floppy titties? No way.

Small, cute breasts all the way.

I hate small tits, and I’m going to disregard the implication of being a fan towards me. Seeing how I pointed out a value to its sticker being reasonable for its offerrings. Everyone asking for a cheaper sticker is being just that….. cheap.

Again! Small tits are annoying! Need me some C38s on up!^

Times were different back then. Things were cheaper, people smiled and a fun time was to be had. The PS2 was king.

PS3 could outsell PS2 if only:

    1) They could Fire Ken Kutaragi, or at least make a new console with all 1st party together (they btw started that strategy after Ken left)

    2) Not making a complex machine that will cost for each unit 800 USD to the company and 600 USD to consumer. Thats a PC investment. OK. for example it’s worth every oenny, but there were decent games? No.

    3) Arrogant cunts at the start made them look pathetic.
I agree that a little competition from companies never hurts when you do things right, but when things starting to show really bad, you should stop acting like a child.

sony improved since 2009 year. I’m happy with my PS3. Good console. It’s not super powerful like some fags say, but it does what current gen console SHOULD and MUST do. I’m happy and everyone who likes gaming on consoles should have one for sure in my opinion.

will that thing surpass PS2? Never. Will it surpass 360? Sure. Wii? No. :P

“So, it would already have little worth when you buy it.”

Does the entire back catalogue of games suddenly burst into flames when the console gets to a certain price? The only reason he would worry about that is if he wanted to play stuff online at the peak of its popularity… and the best stuff would still have people playing anyway.

PS2: Maybe in 2020. XBOX 360, of course. WII: I think already doing it. PC: Nevuh. Anyway, it’s the fuckin’ best console, but I hate it because NO PS2 BACKWARDS. So middle finger to Sony until they fix this ISSUE.

    it will never match.
PS2 had best games in pretty much every genre

The only home console with a chance of doing this i the Wii, I imagine Nintendo will set it’s sights on passing the the PS2 in global sales so expect $50 for a brand new wii in 3-5 years. Personally out of the entire catalogue of Wii games, there’ only a handful i would purchase.

Realistically, the PS3 is never going to come close to selling PS2 numbers for several reasons:

    1) PS2 had no serious competition.

    2) The Playstation brand is a shadow of what it was during PS1/2 days

    3) The market has changed considerably and is changing still. Currently Sony isnt being agile enough to change with it. They need to learn that consumers have more choice, and hence more power now. ‘You get what we give you and youll bloody well like it’ doesnt cut it anymore.

This gen is won already, landslide win by the Wii. 360 and PS3 will have an equal share of the scraps but neither will come close to PS2 figures.

Actually this generation won’t have a PS2 seller, not even with the Wii. We’re mostly moving to the portable era so things that will hit PS2 numbers will be portable machines the DS is close and should surpass it.
The Wii is declining so it’s probably going to sit somewhere close to 100M but not 120M, the 360 and PS3 both have good market-share between 40-50M. Honestly the best scenario for the consumers is if the Wii declines, the others gain and all three are just +/-2M from each other.
