Analyst: Kinect pre-orders had to be capped by retailers

M2 Research Analyst, Billy Pidgeon, has told IG that Kinect pre-orders were so high, retailers had to cap them

Pidgeon also said that as long as Microsoft keeps manufacturing Kinect units to be shipped out for christmas, it’ll keep selling.

“I think Microsoft will sell as many Kinect as can be produced and shipped this holiday season. If five million Kinect are available at retail in North America and Europe, five million will be sold,” he told the site.

“I understand that pre-orders were very aggressive, to the point where these had to be capped to allow for sufficient stock.

“Kinect will move new Xbox 360 consoles, but I believe at least half will be sold into the installed base. Here’s an interesting scenario: a tactically deployed Xbox 360 price cut could give Kinect the capability to accelerate penetration to the point where Microsoft could gain a large mainstream user base while still leveraging a very active hardcore base.”

Last Wednesday, Microsoft upped its projected christmas worldwide sales numbers of Kinect from 3 million up to 5 million.

After its US launch on Thursday, Kinect launches on Wednesday in the UK and Europe.

I want to see sales, i’m not sure that every Xbox 360 owner is excited about kinect. There is something fishy going on.

@3 True, if it is worldwide…

but when i see this at least in Japan: http://kotaku.com/5684102/kinect-unloved-and-lonely-in-tokyo it’s hard to believe about preorders and Japanese people love technology. Yeah i know that Xbox 360 sells there poorly, but they sold 1 million Xbox 360s which is not bad.

I still however believe that Kinect will far out do many posters’ expectations on here.

Went to 3 big box retailers this weekend and they all had Kinects available both bundled and stand alone.

….not hard to find yet.

Anyway, just import it from central Europe, the thing isnt sold out anywhere in France, for example…

I would pay good money to see the faces of all those dumb fanboys buying Kinect beliving they can play Call of Duty on it….many actualy think the Kinect is from the future and wil blow our minds!

Oh I would pay so much…would probably crap in my pants seeing their faces when they realise this is just EyeToy v2

According to a GI journalist tales of Kinect selling out are exagerated, he walked in to a store and there were still loads on the shelf.

The Best Buy I was at yesterday had TONS of Natals. It was a PR stunt by M$ to build hype. Of course the die hard XBOTS have bought two of them but that goes without saying
