Check out the updated version of PS3′s Bluetooth headset

Some shots of the new PS3 Bluetooth headset surfaced on the net today, and the peripheral looks less chunky than the original and bit sexier.
Per shots sent into Kotaku by one of its readers, the ear piece is – thankfully – smaller, the front buttons and indicators look a bit easier to control, and it looks to run you about the same as the original, $49.99
It’s Sony branded, and the changes made seem to be in looks and handling only and nothing new as far as tech.
No word on a release date, but with stores already decking the halls for Christmas, it’ll likely be out in time for gift giving.
Still, we’ll mail Sony about it.
Hit the link above for comparison shots.

I quite like the original, fits me well and the audio quality is excellent.

Seems quite pricey the original Sony one was £25 in the UK I think. They are the only headsets worth considering though – very good quality compared to anything else I’ve tried.

What sony needs is a cheap disposable headset that they can pack in with first party online games and bundle in with systems. Pretty much that is what ms does and it works great for them. I have a blutooth headset and it is aweful and it was expensive. I don’t use it and it seems when I play online with my ps3, most of the other folks don’t use one either. Again cheap, functional, like MS has w/xb360 would be great.
Sony seems to like to overshoot the market. Too expensive, too many feature, whatever.

The clever thing MS did was route the comms through the controller. Very good idea as something cheap and wired is then possible and a good compromise. That allowed them to bundle with every machine.

@4, the current MS headset is awful. The kind with the puck at least let you mute without taking your hands off the controller, now it’s just cheap.
If I need a headset I’ll take my Turtle Beach XLCs every time. Better in every way and cost me like 5 pence more than the MS crap.
I’d actually prefer they took the cost of that garbage off the console price or switched it for a basic HDMI cable and let me buy a 3rd party headset with some quality behind it.

Does look better, but if you leave it to people to buy their own headsets, most wont (see PS3), and if they do they’ll still mostly end up with shockingly bad ones anyway.

I’ve got Turtle Beach X41′s – fantastic solution for wireless general headset + gaming – bit pricey too. I need to keep the noise down when the little ones go to bed though. When I first got them the phones themselves felt cheap and nasty, but they are comfy and sound great.
@6
Yeah I hated the fact they moved the mute button – it was quick and easy to hit before. Don’t see why they moved it.

@7, yeah, that’s the ones.
The main benefit is that you get to hear the game clearly through both ears and voice at the same time.
Don’t work as well if a particular game doesn’t have in-game audio controls (Halo only culprit in my collection).
PS3 doesn’t come with a headset, but at least it does support generic USB and Bluetooth headsets, which is more than can be said for the 360.
Choices are nice.
edit:
@8, my vote goes to cost.

But the point is that you can upgrade to a better quality headset if you are so inclined. But when they give you a cheap one in box it means you have one. Everyone has one.
This isn’t about how much bling bling you have showing off your supper mega dupper headset.
It just means that almost everyone in every game has a headset on Live. Much different on PSN.
Also not passing judgement on if that is a good or bad thing, lol. Just saying. It was smart on MSs part to get a cheap set and stick in the box and in xblive bundles, controler bundles etc. They just about give the thing away.

I completely agree with OG. Better everyone have SOMETHING than forcing everyone to buy after market. Because then only a handful of people will have one.
Besides, the cheap 360 one works great. I don’t like having both ears covered, I don’t want to hear game music through it. And the mute/volume button is very accessible.

I’ve never understood why people seem to want everyone to have a headset as standard. 99% of the random voices I hear online are either worthless or abusive; if I’m playing with someone I know it’s hardly an impenetrable obstacle for them to rustle up something to use.
Those who are bothered about speaking will make arrangements to do so, and given the quality of conversation that tends to transpire online it’s hardly surprising a lot of people would rather play their games mute.

I’ll never understand why people that don’t want to communicate play games that communication and teamwork is essential. Like ANY shooter. Non Communicators are posers that make your team suck. You 100% can not compete effectively without communication and voice is the fastest and most effective way to communicate.
Social networking is the largest concept in media these days. Voice is the most effective form of that. Personally only maybe 5% of all people I run into online talk needlessly or ruin the game through talking. The VAST majority are people that are trying to get the most out of their game.

@15, just by guessing, CoD 4, 5 & 6, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Medal of Honor, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV & Fifa 2011… in no particular order.
