IGN goes live with first Kinect software review, goes with 7.5 for Sonic Free Riders

Monday, 1st November 2010 20:39 GMT By Johnny Cullen

IGN‘s gone live tonight with the first software review for Kinect ahead of its US launch on Thursday.

The title under the firing line? Sonic Free Riders. The score? 7.5.

Here’s a blurb:

“Sonic Free Riders also features bikes, which players control by standing facing the screen and holding their arms out like they’re gripping handlebars. Kicking out still activates boost and all the items control the same. I found the bikes to be tiring on my arms, but on the plus side I was totally able to play the game while sitting on a stool.”

And so begins the flood. The full embargo for Kinect reviews, hardware and software, is tomorrow.

Kinect launches on Thursday in the US, with a November 10 release in the UK and Europe.

Oh dear… I shall deduct 3 from every score released for Kinect games in the next 4 months… the novelty should have worn off by then and hopefully the industry will restore it’s sense of reality about this sort of rubbish.

Unless of course Kinect has dramatically improved sins I had a go at Eurogamer Expo this year I’m just skeptical on how any game can be more than a 6 or 7

Game looked bad anyway. Surprised it scored that high.

I wonder how long it’ll be before we see a Microsoft branded gaming stool?

The review read like a manual. Oh well, it is IGN.

On another note, there’ll be lots of rounding-up for you lot to do tomorrow. :)

Of all the stuff I’ve seen for Kinect, which isn’t that much actually, this looked the worst. Feels like Sega are just jumping on as quick as they can again, with rubbish, like they did with Sonic The Hedgehog on the PS3/360.

This looked terrible in the GiantBomb quick-look, and Eurogamer recently ran a preview shitting all over it. Maybe it’s improved beyond recognition.

  12. Johnny Cullen

Yeah, Keza didn’t exactly give it all the love in the world in that EG preview.

Still, Dance Central has to be the pick of the launch line-up.

  13. The_Red

Let’s see… Sega says that we’ve released too many Sonic games in the past and now will have to focus more on quality than quality. Then they go and release 3 Sonic games in less than 3 months.

Also, I checked Sonic Riders on PS2 and it was a truly mediocre game. Does Kinect really improve the experience or…

So what scores do we see Dance Central getting tomorrow, lads?

I’m expecting 9′s and 10′s across the board with all the wordings of “revolutionary”, “killer app”, and so on…

    #14 4 years ago
  15. Psychotext

Mostly 8s I reckon. Some 9s, some 7s and a SHOCKHORROR 4 from one of the usual suspects (destructoid or someone like that)

I fail to grasp the scoring system of Ign. they described the Castlevania game as mediocre to lame, while giving it a 7.5.

their God Hand review is legendary.

“fail to grasp the scoring system of Ign. they described the Castlevania game as mediocre to lame, while giving it a 7.5.”

For your “Good For Nothing” brain: Each reviewer have individual taste and view on each subject.
There is no Score system in reviews. For some reviewers 7.5 is a good game, for some idiots 7.5 is mediocre and lame.

  18. DaMan

me no speak latvian. a 7.5 score good means, while if the text say I quote :

‘Konami describes Castlevania: Lords of Shadow as a reboot for the 25-year old franchise. I’d say it’s an unrelated game that borrows the “Castlevania” name. None of the common gameplay elements you’d expect from the series are to be found here, nor does Lords of Shadow star any familiar characters or include recognizable music. The only loose connection is the presence of vampires, werewolves, and skeletons. This action adventure game that’s heavy on combat actually has much more in common with God of War than Castlevania. There is definitely fun to be had with Lords of Shadow and it’s drop dead gorgeous at times, but Castlevania fans might be left in the dark.’

so say they it no Castlevania, it GoW clone is.

‘.. the game is a linear exploration game rather than a “Metroidvania” game. There’s no map, hardly any exploration, poorly-implemented combat that feels like “going through the motions”, no camera control, has framerate issues, and stars the rather brilliant Patrick Stewart but has him “stooping to eye-rolling melodrama”.’

good job did you, erzatwatus. failed you have understand to what me said, while calling me idiot.

try harder do time next, erzanutter.

See I’m almost certain the kinects biggest feats will be in dancing games. The sitting on a stool bit just appears to be dangerous for me and overweight gamers. I am 6’3 and 210 lbs if I lean forward on a stool to long I will fall forward. Soooo… that being my personal flaw I can see it happening to others.

Now, as for this stool issue. Are we planning on seeing the kinect is nightclubs and bars now? Can it function in those’s atmospheres? I must research this more!

As for the sonic riders in kinect this 7.5 is higher then I’d have expected. I truely expected like 5-6.5 scores. But, forthe time being I applaud this game with a slow clap.

@20, you are right, but he is a SPECIAL :D

@Retardman, “me no speak latvian”, “erzatwatus”, “erzanutter”

Oh, so who is butthurted? Owwwwwww….. ^^^^^

“a 7.5 score good means, while if the text say I quote”

Who said that 7.5 is GOOD for IGN? Retardman as always shows his mighty knowledge :3
Good game for them starts at 8.0+ or at 8.5

  24. Callum

Aye, dance central will clean up, while other games will probably get a wide range depending heavily on the reviewer. If Ellie on eurogamer does one I will be very happy as she is a very funny lady.

stretch215, this guy is some mentally handicapped 22 year old from a latvian shithole, and since he has noone to either like or hate irl, he lives on the internet. see how he describes me? that’s because I’m the bad (which automatically implies stupid as well) one, internet vendetta.

erzatwatus, dumbfuck you are. what else can i say. that was the point, the scoring system is flawed. who are you, dipshit twat anyway? why would anyone give a crap what you think about it? (other than for the lulz of course). get back to fapping over those 2d hentai titties, nutcase.

did I mention that you’re a retard as well? say hello to the patients at Riga Mental Hospital for me.

    ah, I forgot. retard.

  29. Erthazus

“erzatwatus” “dumbfuck you are” “who are you, dipshit twat anyway?” “get back to fapping over those 2d hentai titties” “nutcase” “retard” “ah, I forgot. retard.”

WOW :D A record. You Kiss your Mother with that mouth? We’ve got some brain damage here :D Probably destruction or degeneration of brain cells.

“that was the point, the scoring system is flawed”

Retardman, degeneration in your face. There is no scoring system because each author have individual vision over a subject. Review score represents his mood and how he felt playing this game. :D Hah, you won’t understand that anyway… After… THIRD POST

Either that, or this IS intelligent, and maybe we’ve been part of a joke. This is all a film set in your computer room.

Theyve been filming for a while. Lucky nothing goes on in internet-connected computer rooms. Nothing questionable.

Sorry, I’m getting off-topic. The point is, people wank in computer rooms.

It could be that, or it could be that I have been hitting myself in the head with a hammer rather a lot lately. It might explain a significant amount of this.

  33. Crysis

@17, IGN has a score system for their reviews,
But it’s only an individual’s opinion, just as valid as any other comment from anyone else who has played it, you can never really trust a review anyways, just look @ GTA IV, while i love it & nearly every single reviewer loved it, there are many who hate the theme of it, & after playing GTA: San Andreas, many also hated the lack of customization.
Also there are games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, The Legend of Zelda & GoldenEye 007 which are some of the most popular games of all time, but when i played them while they were new, all i thought was meh.
Reviews are just opinions, don’t follow them blindly, some people do =/

  34. DaMan

oh, you deserve every single word of those.

dude, let’s face the facts really. you’re an idiot. off the top of my head: users Ghz told you, DSB, Mushroom told you, dozens of others told you. on numerous topics, in numerous conversations. to each and everyone of them you respond with the same denial and that ‘butthurted’ word. I take it you still haven’t realized that the word ‘butthurted’ doesn’t exist.. fucktard? indeed. it’s not even funny anymore, it’s embarassing.

now, your communication skills are so poor one can hardly understand what you’re trying to say at all. sadly, it even has nothing to do with your bad english, you merely fail to uh, talk (write)… I ‘m pretty sure your russian/latvian is as poor and childish. not only that but you *always* don’t know what you’re talking about.

erzamess, your attempts at err, humor and insults look silly. they have the exact opposite effect.. do the internet a favour and pick up an ABC book for starters..

now, you silly rabbit are telling me there’s no ‘scoring system’ when all you did a couple of months ago was ranting evrywhere on this website how 10 should mean ‘perfect’ instead of ‘exceptional’? you re telling me now there’s no meaning behind any scores whasoever? tell you what, after that I would seriously visit your local Riga clinic, you obviously need it.

by the way, Ign isn’t just an opinion from a guy on the internet, those folks get paid for writing recommendations. they aren’t doing it for the lulz. they’ve taken upon themselves to recommend games to people, and these games cost money. thus, Ign’s reviews should be consistent in their scoring.

and like i said before, giving out a 0.75 to a mediocre game is a fundamentally flawed system, since if their scores start out at 5-7, they basically say there’s no such thing as poor titles. which is in fact, a cleverly disguised way of avoiding problems with any of the publishers.

@34, for shame, you should know better than to attempt to prove yourself to him, he deserves nothing, he is THE most hated person on this site, we shouldn’t even bother reading his ridiculous comments, let alone reply to them, he’s too naive to comprehend any proof anyways… just don’t waste your time trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

    it’s for the sport atm.

how this dumbass still isn’t banned from this place is beyond me though. he does indeed approach the line those banned users have crossed. since every single comment thread he appeared in is a mess. it’s even unfair really.

Well, we can only hope that he finally realizes that no one here likes him so that he would just stfu.
Pretty much every article on the forum that he has commented in has “Erthazus is a Twat” & “Twathazus” as tags, no idea who’s tagging them, but i can’t blame them.
