Rumor: PSP2 uses memory sticks and has around twice the RAM of Xbox 360

Another day, another bit of rumored spec for the elusive PSP2. You love it though don’t you?

Of course you do, and today, there’s talk that the new device will allow the use of memory sticks and also rivals the processing power of Xbox 360.

Sources close to Kotaku who were privy to Sony’s internal meetings during TGS in September, have confirmed the larger HD display and the panel on the back with a mouse trackpad, dual analog sticks, and being UMD-free.

That’s all well and good, but the latest rumored specs has games able to be stored on a memory stick as an option. However, that last part is still up in the air with Sony, as it’s trying to figure out “what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2″. Memory sticks sounds about right though.

The site’s sources also told it that the new device has a massive amount of RAM for a handheld, which is twice what is included in Xbox 360 and hits at 1GB, compared to the 64MB of PSPgo and PSP 3000 .

Xbox 360 has 512MB of RAM and runs on a 3.2 GHZ CPU.

In comparison, Kotaku has also been told 3DS “will be as powerful as” Wii’s 64MB of RAM, “a special processor clocked at 729 MHz”.

Sony has said it’s all rumor and speculation, of course, but it sounds like whatever is being put into it will make it one powerful little handheld machine.

Hopefully something will be revealed soon so we can all start planning a purchase at the end of next year.

1024 MB Ram? Than it is more powerful than PS3 :D AHAHAHAHAHA :D

Ps3 and Xbox 360 using 512 MB ram. That was my first Rig that i built in 2002 :D such a disgrace.

Oh and PS3 is actually is even worse in this. PS3 use 256 MB for XDR @ 3.2 GHz and 256 MB GDDR3 for @ 700 MHz.

I have a PC already with 8 GB Ram just for the reference. It’s just hillarious when handheld is more powerful than a console of this gen that was marketed as the strongest platform. :D

Hmmm…interesting. Would be willing to bet Resident Evil PSP will be a PSP2 launch title. THAT shit would sell me INSTANTLY.

If it is 1 GB ram, i expect multitasking on the handheld and graphical enchantment over some games and maybe a lot of enemies on the screen that even God Of war 3 will be jealous.

thats just hillarious. Sounds like a powerefull handheld.

    I don’t think so.

For purely selfish reasons, I want this to be a beast power wise. Increasingly I find I’m spending my evenings sat with a film on the TV whilst playing a game on my iPod. If I can replace the iPod with a device which features proper gaming controls and enough power to deliver PS3-like quality games, then I’ll be very happy.

Not sure if such a device makes good business sense of course, but a truly portable Modern Warfare game could be a big deal.

@5, Xbox 360 have 3.2 GHz IBM PowerPC tri-core processor that is called XENON.

    1GB of RAM you say?

Why yes I say, who told you?!

    #9 4 years ago

Processing power and RAM are two completely different things.

Uber powerful device = Low battery life/over heating.

Please keep balance in mind Sony.

There’s no way they’re going to throw a gig of ram in there. There’s f’all advantage in giving a handheld that much ram.

Where does Kotaku find this shit?

power is nothing, it needs a lot of support from the 3rd party and no piracy…. and a 3D screen :/

    poo poo fruits lol

sony’s got a bad track record in handhelds, but I REALLY want that Resident Evil PSP game.

Just sold my PSP1000. In the market for something state of the art and a lot of live in it.

I’m sort of interested in the 3DS, and this would be the first nintendo handheld i’d buy since original gameboy. I like the game lineup and the 3D bit sounds cool.

Will be nice to see how they market this and the PlayStation Phone. Seems they plan to have all bases covered – a home console, a beefy portable and a phone.

I do recall reading an article about the psp2 having issues with overheating in the prototype stages(which is now) and having 1gb of ram. It would explain the overheating issues. They’ve. Been. Working on.

Keep it. Coming I want to see if they can pull a. Handheld off like this. Hopefully with a built in internet service

Having lots of RAM does not make the system powerful, case in point look at low end PC GPU’s with 1GB of RAM that sell for under 60-90.

That doesn’t mean its not useful of course it just seems a bit out there for a handheld to have that amount of RAM unless its going to be something else like an iPad competitor.

  21. Gama_888

1gb of ram sounds good. maybe then us playstation users will have cross game voice chat? :P
also doesnt this thing have a camera?
bigger screen might make enough space to run the webcam so you can see people, while there outside, and be playing a game on a portable console?
could one gig of ram run that?

i notice a gpu isnt mentioned in the specs. maybe this 1gb of ram counts for that too?

    #21 4 years ago

    UMD-free???? God i hope that’s not true.

  23. Kuwabara

choochoo u dumb fuck, had the ps3 been released alongside the xbox 360, it would be infront by 2 or 3 million. Had the ps3 been the same price as xbox, it would be infront by 10 million. The ps3 is the most popular brand, get it through ur thick head!

  24. Crysis

Maybe sell modified Memory sticks with games on it at retail & sell an add on accessory to play UMD, i understand why UMD is a bad idea (huge power consumption) but cutting out retailers leave us only with one place to purchase games, & i don’t like the sound of PSN dictating our prices, granted some psn-psp games are generally cheap (unlike nearly every game on demand on the PS3 & 360), i still don’t like the sound of it.

  25. Crysis

also @choochoo, stop bending over to Microsoft, why would you honestly give a flying fuck that people buy & like Sony products? They are generally superior & quality products(not opinion, it’s general knowledge), which is why they generally cost more (not saying everything they make is perfect *cough* laptop batteries *cough*), if you like cheaper & generally more unreliable hardware, take the gamble & save some $$$, no one cares, it’s not like you work for MS, so why try to sell their products you twat?

  30. manamana

I think the techspecs from the first Z-system are more realistic for a handheld, than these. Besides, 1GB of RAM isn’t far off, since the iPhone4 uses 512MB.

But hey Steph – keep da news rollin’!

  31. Blerk

These “specs” are getting more difficult to believe by the day.

Thinking about “no UMD” … how’s the PSN with all PSPtitles coming along, Sony?

  33. aprotosis

@23 And if I had wheels I would be a wagon. Maybe in your world, PS3 is the most popular brand. I honestly don’t know why you care. You have stock? Were you part of the dev team? Move along.

if you had wheels Id ride you down a huge hill and probably crash at the bottom. anyone got a helmet i can borrow this is gonna be fun!
