Mad Jobs called Ballmer over Bungie sale

Former Xbox exec Ed Fries has told Develop that Apple head Steve Jobs made a personal, angry phone call to Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer after Bungie sold out to the Windows firm in 2000.

“As soon as we announced we bought Bungie, Steve Jobs called,” Fries said.

“He was mad at [Microsoft CEO Steve] Ballmer and phoned him up and was angry because we’d just bought the premier Mac game developer and made them an Xbox developer.”

Fries was ordered to placate Jobs over the issue.

“So, during the day, I got an email from Steve Ballmer asking me to phone Steve Jobs and calm him down about the whole thing,” he said.

“Anyway, we did this deal with Apple where we’d port some PC games to the Macintosh and help Peter Tamte create this company to do it, and I had to go to a Mac developer conference and get on stage and talk about this whole new partnership. It was a pretty strange time.”

Jesus, why did Microsoft have to bargain with Apple at all? Surely them buying Bungie had nothing to do with Apple?

I suppose Jobs would have been pretty peeved. As the article says, Bungie was the premier Mac games developer at the time, and the competition basically stole them from under their nose.

I’m surprised MS felt a responsibility to placate him, all’s fair in love and war etc.

Stevie J and Stevie B are well suited.

They’re both CEO’s of massive software companies, one made an interviewee cry, the other threw a chair at an employee who was leaving for Google.

They should get on like a house on fire.

And what if thet diden’t placate him? They’d be banned from the company picknick?
Apple would stop making software for Windows?

    And they would care?

Did Apple lose anything of worth? No. The Halo franchise was fucking shite ever since it’s conception and continues to be shite, even today.

Yeah MS have only made a truck load of cash from Halo – nothing of any real worth …

Like Bungie alone were going to “save” the Mac gaming scene…get a grip.

Nobody was going to drop PC or consoles to spend 2x more (than a PC) or 5x more (than a console) to play one game on a Mac.

And given the muted PC response to Halo, that probably goes double for PC gamers, and given that console gamers are console gamers because they don’t want to spend much on hardware, it probably goes 10x for them.

That’s rich, coming from someone that has absolutely fuck all to say on the topic!

Doesn’t surprise me. Jobs is an egomaniac that would do the exact same thing, but bitches non-stop when someone else does it. If Apple had signed Bungie, Halo would’ve cost $120/copy because it’s the Mac culture to over charge for everything they release.

@5 Im looking for one, but can’t dig it out at the moment. I read it in a biography a few years back. It was way back in the early boom years of Apple, before he got pushed out.

@Happy Hardon Harry well Halo would not have been that bad, if it would be a PC game. story was awesome in Combat Evolved. but gameplay, uuum not so much. I mean come on it’s an FPS! who plays FPSes on consoles? only fags do. and that’s because of one or both of these reasons: 1. they r shit weak and can’t deal with the better players so obviously if u’re going to suck at something u’re either going to drop it or move to weaker league and 2. they r stupid. yes PC players, tech can be very hard thing for some ppl to understand. I mean I can understand why it’s hard for my grandparents who were born and live in the country side but for everyone else..!? come on! I for one am playing bfbc2 on a 2 year old laptop and it runs smoothly. usually kicking the shit out of most players. my point is that buying a relatively new decent system is relatively easy. and damn cheap if u go desktop-way. lappies r slightly more expensive. :)

Honestly, why did they even bother to placate him? What a big baby.

it makes sense to placate jobs… people do strange things when there angry. if you don’t understand that then maybe you should never piss anyone off in person.

@endgame, yeh i undersand you, because EVERYBODY enjoys the conveniance & portability of a keyboard & mouse-ONLY accuracy matters, & has the extra 100s of $$$ to buy a gaming rig, & EVERYBODY cares ONLY about graphics, & wow- i had no idea that well over half the gaming population is gay, simply because they wanted something cheap & conveniant to play games on.
Get your head out of your arse you egomaniac, you’re just as big of a fucking troll as ‘itsucks’ & ‘choochoo’.
“1. they r shit weak and can’t deal with the better players so obviously if u’re going to suck at something u’re either going to drop it or move to weaker league and 2. they r stupid.”-imbecile, don’t think anything sums him up any better, maybe retard, granted you can spell, let’s just stick with imbecile.
