PC Gamer rubbishes FFXIV with 30% review score

ffxiv8

UK mag PC Gamer has dropped a 30 percent review score on FFXIV, saying the MMO has “one of the most heinous interfaces ever devised”.

“The kindest thing that can be said about the Final Fantasy MMO is that it has a good intro movie,” said the piece, as reported by CVG.

Lag, framerate issues and a “nightmarish control scheme” are also flagged.

The reviewer delivers the final blow with, “Final Fantasy XIV is so deeply flawed that I can’t even see how future updates could redeem it.”

Whoops.

The game’s received some very tough scores, taking a D+ from 1UP and a 4/10 from Gamespot.

Square bumped the game’s free-play from one to two months last week due to the “current state of the game”.

STAMP ON ITS CROTCH, IT’S MORE THAN IT DESERVES

What I meant to say was “Oh dear, this game really doesn’t appear to be very good.”

This is just a typical MMORPG game. There are tons of it on PC for free and even better.

and yes, PC gaming mags won’t make excuses like: Well ok, it’s not that bad, there are some issues, blah blah, blah… Score: 86%

Bet Microsoft aren’t crying too hard about missing out on this for 360 now…

Good to see PC Gamer hasn’t lost its edge in its move to the online space.

They had it coming, a disgrace to the franchise…again.

Have to agree. It’s basic design choices that ruined the game. These aren’t really fixable unless the patches are major rewrites.

Still way overrated. If something like this gets released and still gets away with a score above 0 then I’ll start selling my new 50 dollar game. I haven’t even made it yet but it seems like sites and reviewers give scores above 0 to games that are released 2-3 years before their even remotely ready to be shown to the public let alone sold to them.

They’re planning PS3 version. PC version seems to be a paid beta-test. I’ll keep an eye for PS3 version.

Is this version tailored for the PC? FFXI was focused on the PS2 and so the control scheme was really clunky on the PC.

Then there’s this, which doesn’t effect us westerners directly, but explains much of the poor quality, if true.

As for the larger picture, I doubt it will matter. Final Fantasy is one of the most powerful names in gaming, landing somewhere between Call of Duty and Star Wars. People will play anything with that name in front of a number. People played FFXI religiously, for years, which – even by the brutal standards of its contemporaries – was agonizingly unrewarding.

@11 WoW in the beggining? It was a masterpiece from the beggining just with few bugs.

They should have made it an open world action rpg like Tera.

PC Gamer, I love you even more now. I want to see more scores below 60% in the future from all reviewers, especially the ones with the big names/corporate funding.

PC Gamer is not a UK only Mag, shows up in my mailbox every month, The funny thing is that FFXIV dumped huge advertising money on PC Gamer and they still gave it an honest score, kudos for that.
