LittleBigPlanet 2 delayed to January 2011, delay is “disappointing,” says SCEE

Media Molecule’s confirmed that it has delayed LittleBigPlanet 2 from it’s original November release to January 2011.
The developer said it had “agreed to allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve,” adding it was “truly sorry.”
SCEE’s told VG247 this morning that the delay is “disappointing,” but that it’s “key” to replicate the quality MM achieved with the original LBP.
“It is obviously disappointing that LBP2 will not be available until January, but as one of the most innovative and fun franchises ever seen on PlayStation platforms, we believe that it is key that the quality of the game lives up to the reputation established by Media Molecule with the multi mullion selling, award winning original,” a Sony rep told us.
“LBP2 is an incredibly ambitious and exciting game and we have no doubt that it will raise the bar even further when it launches in January.”
The news after Sony gave VG247 a no comment yesterday on the rumour of the game being delayed, following a report from French site PS3Gen.
The DIY title was originally due to launch in the US on November 16, with no UK date announced before today’s delay.
The game, which this time allows you to develop your own games, is currently in a closed beta.
The full statement from the LBP website from Media Molcule is below.
“LittleBigPlanet 2 is a crazy dream, a dream to allow players to make whatever kind of game they want, but also to play though a great adventure of drama and excitement, power-ups, and cinematics. But like all of the most ambitious ideas, it can be a considerable challenge to turn these dreams in fun games. We’ve all been working like powered-up space ninjas and we’re almost there, but because we love what we’ve made, and we love our little sack-friends, and most of all we love all our fans out there, we couldn’t let you all get together until we knew we were giving you the best experience imaginable. Which is why we’ve taken the hard decision to delay the worldwide release of LittleBigPlanet 2, originally slated for later this year to January 2011.
“We know this will come as disappointing news for all you LittleBigPlanet fans, and believe us, we are disappointed too. We are a tight-knit team and we take enormous pride in our work, so to raise the bar we’ve set with the original LittleBigPlanet, a game that has been so embraced by all, we’ve agreed to allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve. We are truly sorry, but hope you understand that we have to build the best possible game, as it is the foundation of our community.
On the upside, we are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned.
Thanks for your continued love and support, it won’t be long – we promise.
Lots of love from all at Mm.”

Christmas is looking a bit sparse on the platform exclusive front this year regardless of which machine you own. Good job we’ve got the third-parties.

Bu-bu-but… It was the only other Sony title I gave a damn about this Q4.
All that’s left now is GT5!

@14 – Perhaps, but that wasn’t what he said :-p And with all the multi-platform games coming out, how is GT5 bad as the only exclusive? Aside from Kinect do MS have any others?

I’ve been on the beta for the past couple of nights for something we’re planning, and honestly, the amount of originality on it is staggering.
That Stereo/Mono level is properly amazing. Anyone who’s played it knows what I mean.
Properly gutted this has been delayed.

The Wii will be the console with the most exclusives this autumn by the looks of things.
Kirby, Donkey Kong, Epic Mickey.
I suppose you could list all the Kinect titles on 360, but I’m trying to think of the titles people actually care about.

maybe dc universe (not sure on that one)

Well even though the holiday exclusive titles seem a bit short, this being released in January works out fine I believe.
January is sparse for titles (all we have is Dead Space 2 and ME2(for the PS3), maybe a live/psn title somewhere but that’s it. If this gets released in the first week of January that’s good for sales. I mean look at Bayonetta and Darksiders (sure the price for those games dropped ridiculously in the UK after 2/3 months but so did the first LBP).
January is a good time unlike February or March when it’s overloaded like this October/November. While I dislike delays sometimes it works out great, LBP one was delayed because of a song, Batman AA delayed for a few bug fixes. It’s just two months

wow
the sad thing is when i first saw lbp2 announced i thought there is no way this will make 2010 it’ll be delayed but then it looked like it was so far along that it could be done
and now this? Seriously if this is just a marketing move sony then you have failed massively:
January – lbp2, dead space 2, ME2 PS3, WoW cataclysm?
February – Bulletstorm, Killzone 3, portal 2, deus ex 3
March – Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, Homefront
April – gears 3
Q1 – ghost recon, fear 3
Seriously this is a very stupid move sony

I don’t understand the desire to have so many high-budget titles in the first half of the year now.
Surely they would benifit more from a Summer or Christmas release?
Summer is usually empty and can make games sell like hotcakes (Mafia II, Batman) and Christmas is Christmas.
But the first half of the year is when everyone is recovering financially from Xmas, looking at tax bills etc, it’s not good!

It’s not really a “move” though is it? It’s a reality. At least its at the beginning of the crowded period and it distinguishes itself by being nothing like any of the others there. There is also the assumption none of the others are going to slip too.
Sony have been decidedly rubbish at getting stuff out the door this generation though. One of their biggest failings.

@AHA – Not exactly.
If Sony releases it in a quiet week in January like Darksiders and Bayonetta this year, probably the first week of 2011 (January 3 – 7), then it’ll do alright.

It’s got to be a hard decision to make, delaying something like this.
I’m sure MM know what they are doing, the footage so far looks fantastic, and the beta feedback sounds impressive also.
Looks like you will only be seeing one sack this christmass…Santas.
Take from that what you will.

Given how many people said “Stupid Sony!” when the original date was announced it’s always funny to see people say “Stupid Sony!” when the date has been changed. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
No matter what the game is, I’d prefer to have a later better game than an earlier, worse one.
Given the stupendous array of superb games available for all machines in all genres I can’t imagine a two month delay is going to leave gamers stuck with nothing else worth playing.

it was delayed on purpose so all the spotlight can be on gt5. i myself found it abit odd that they would consider releasing gt5 alongside lbp2. Two first party sony exclusives in the same month isnt a smart decision

Not for nothing, but gift cards are all the rage around here – meaning if MM can get LBP2 out the door just after the first of the year, they may well still be able to cash in on xmass shopping.
That being said, this, more then any other game, was meant to be under our family tree. Guess will keep our eye on that Rock Band 3 keyboard or maybe something from Move. Or maybe we will just wait, LBP2 should have thousands of hours of enjoyment with it. Looks like a great value, would likly have been my GOTY.

But hey, if it means the final product is all the more polished because of this, its a delay that’s worth it. I want LBP2 to be the best game it can be when its finally released.
