Dissidia 012 [duodecim]: Final Fantasy announced for Europe and North America
Square Enix has announced Dissidia 012 [duodecim]: Final Fantasy will be released across Europe and North America in 2011 exclusively on PSP.
The title itself, “duodecim”, which means 12th in Latin, refers to the 12th battle between Cosmos and Chaos, which requires new allies, both good and evil, to aide you in battle.
The follow-up to 2008′s RPG/beat-em-up Dissidia: Final Fantasy, the game includes an expanded roster with FFXIII’s Lightning, FFVII’s Tifa and FFIV’s Kain, along with new game modes, story missions, a new assist mode, items, alternate costumes and combat features.
More “surprises” and characters are to be revealed in the coming months.

Old school definitions:
Side scrolling beat’ em up= final fight, double dragon etc.
Beat’ em up= street fighter, kof etc.

@4 Wrong. The genre is known as “fighting games” or “fighters” for short.
I know this solely because some fairly hardcore fighting game fans corrected me on this personally a few years ago, when I accidentally referred to them beat-em-ups as well.

@4 been playing beat em ups since early 90s, never heard your definition of Street Fighter like games.
makes no sense too , lulz. ‘em’ implies that there’re numerous enemies.
oh and it isn’t pedantic in any way, this is like calling strategy rpg an ‘rts’.

Mmmm… english isn’t my language, but here years ago we used to define “beat’ em up”(english words) these types of games.
But i guess you are right, “em”=them(is kof a beat’ em up? XD ).

just for talking, the italian word for both types of games is “picchiaduro” (“picchia”= beat(up), “duro”=hard)

@7 King of Fighters is a fighting game as well. Anything like Street Fighter.
Games like Streets of Rage would be beat ‘em ups.

@9 well, I’ve always been using american/english definitions..
in my native tongue they ‘re both called ‘fighting’. fighting one on one and fighting vs everyone if you translate it literally.
either way that’s how they’re being called these days.

dissidia is such an awesome game. the very best psp game imo, because it´s perfect for the plattform. other great games like gow and syphon filter always made me wanna play it with a real gamepad. dissidia was cool for the psp..will be tempted to pick up a psp again just for that…maybe they decide otherwise and will bring it to the 3ds as well which i plan to buy anyway…
