Bungie “probably the last remaining high quality independent developer,” says Kotick

Monday, 20th September 2010 21:18 GMT By Johnny Cullen

This ain’t going to swallow well.

Activision president Bobby Kotick has told investors that the last great indie developer is “probably” Bungie.

“Bungie are a very unusual company,” he said, speaking at the Deutsche Bank 2010 Technology Conference last week.

“They’re probably the last remaining high quality independent developer. That has sort of has institutional skills and capabilities. And they’re a real company.”

We give an “oh snap” to Insomniac.

Activision announced in April it had entered into a ten-year publishing deal with Bungie over its “next big universe”.

No details on the game have been revealed so far, although Activision studios boss Dave Stohl told VG247 at E3 the reveal of the title will be “incredible.”

Thanks, CVG and GoNintendo.

Kotick says great many things, but most of them are bullshit.
    I have 2 questions:
    1) If they’re so good, why Halo 3, ODST and Reach generally suck and have shitty graphics?
    2) What’s up with those rumors about Kotick and monkeys?

you missed the part of the quote where he says

“and they shall be mine, they will make call of duty games then your will shall be broken and your monies MINE MUAHAHAHA!!!”

Kotick wouldn’t know a good development team if it punched him in the face.

Which is what most of them do when he approaches them.

Really, Bungie hasn’t been truly challenged until now. They revolutionized FPSs on consoles, but they also stuck to that blueprint for the better part of a decade.

Now they have to change that formula and do it all over again. That’s gonna be interesting.

Even so, I think it’s pretty cute that a AAA developer can rightly call themselves indie.

@1 First time I have had to use this in a while…

Don’t get me wrong, Bungie are a brilliant studio, and are probably the only real developer with massive mainstream pulling power. For the past ten years, Halo has proven that.

But there are many other fantastic indies like Insomniac, Remedy, Ninja Theory. Those are my favourite indie studios alongside Bungie. So I wouldn’t quite say Kotick is right. Far from it, actually.

The EA guy talks to one bank, Kotick to another; do these cunts talk to any organisation other than banks?

valve count as indie then right?

    Cos that trumps anything ;)

Bungie have had massive success with Halo but thats it, they are unproven with new IPS. Insominac have had success between 3 different ips thats more impressive same with Valve. Its because of this that id put Valve and Insominac ahead, Bungie are unproven outside of Halo basically.

Remember this is Kotick, by “High quality independent developer” he probably means “Independent developer who can bring in the most money”.

…and by an astounding coincidence, we’ve just signed a contract with them!”

I hope nobody gets their hackles too high treating this like an actual opinion. Kotick doesn’t even play videogames, he neither knows nor could care less about which indie studios are good or what makes them that way.

One, they were hardly independent – or at least haven’t been for years – and two, Valve anyone? Independent, hugely successful titles, critical acclaim and their own publishing capability through their own self run online store?

What is it with the sudden burst of PR crap from all quarters all of a sudden?

This is being blown a bit out of proportion. Of course Kotick is going to say something like this – his audience is his investors. He has to justify the cost of the 10 year deal with Bungie, so he’s hardly likely to say “actually they’re a bit shit”. He’s going to hype them up and reassure the investors that he has made the right decision.

“Remaining high quality independent developer”? Valve and Epic Games (yes Gears were/are developed pretty much on the same terms as Halo series was, but it’s just one of their projects) are not HQ or independent enough? Or they’re too much independent for the likes of Kotick?

Tomorrow kids, Kotick tells the importance drinking plenty of fluids…otherwise… you guessed it… we die.

I’m just glad studios like Valve, Epic, id, Bethesda and Gearbox are still around.

I actually fear Koticks version of the future where every single game plays like a Halo clone.

Imagine a world where there is no sprint.

    Fuck that.

    “has told investors”
key phrase. thus they indeed are, at least one of the finest.

Remedy haven’t been relevant since early 2000s btw, all they did after MP2 was an unsuccessful niche title, which took them ages to develop.

He just publicly took a huge dump on every independant developer out there. From Valve, to Insomniac and their blockbusters, to every small indy dev team struggeling to put out something unusual. Even quanitifying that with “investors meeting speak” doesn’t exuse it. He’s just a douchebag.

I believe Bungie is a high quality independent studio, but it’s short sighted as all hell not to agree with the examples that Johnny mentioned.

  33. DaMan

I can’t help but laugh at people comparing Bungie to something like Remedy Ent. what are you on, isn’t the studio judged by it’s output?

they have three times as much staff and since 2004 they ‘ve released 4 games while all those finnish guys did was that massive ‘horror’ flop. they aren’t comparable either way, even if you think highly of their game.
