Last Guardian confirmed for holiday 2011 – new HD trailer, amazing screens

Thursday, 16th September 2010 12:15 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Fumito Ueda’s just confirmed a holiday 2011 release for The Last Guardian at Sony’s TGS presser.

The date was mentioned at the end of a, quite frankly, amazing trailer for the game. Get it below.

The long-rumoured ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD PS3 remakes were also confirmed, trailered and screened to death – get everything on that here.

Ueda confirmed during his time on stage that The Last Guardian will support 3D.

He’s also revealed at an event to press that the main human character in the game was originally a girl. This was decided against for two reasons in the end, however.

One being that, with all the climbing in the game, it was thought it would be best a boy would fit the profile as a young boy would have a better grip then a young girl (via D’Toid).

The second being the girl would have ended up wearing a skirt, which you could probably see up with certain camera angles. Ueda in pervert shocker.

Some new screens were released for it yesterday, with a lot more below. It. Looks. Amazing.

The last Team ICO title, Shadow of the Colossus, released back in Europe in 2006 for PS2, and will be getting a re-release on PS3 alongside ICO.

Holiday 2011? When is that? I appreciate its an americanism, but for us UK people that could be half term, easter, summer, christmas, even maundy fecking thursday for all I know. I thought this was a UK based website, how about using terms we can all understand!

Yeah, cause girls only wear skirts, right? Dear lord. All you’d have to do is puts some pants on the model under the skirt, if there was one.

@8 “Holiday” is a blanket term for the pre-Christmas sales period.

Hmmm Ico, Shadow and this…looks like I will have to succumb and get a PS3 next year.

@10 Actually that doesn’t fit with the setting and aesthetics of the game.a girl wearing pants, trousers(even under the skirt) is a little bit more modern than the “supposed” time period these games take place in.

The game looks gorgeous can’t wait to see more of it :)

@ 20 UC 3 wont be out next year, i seriously doubt it anyway.

@1 A female character could easily wear the exact same clothing the current male character is wearing, and it would still perfectly fit the aesthetic.

Obviously I don’t mean a literal skirt in the modern sense, more something along the lines of a long top that extends past the thighs.

My point was that the argument for them not using a female character is pretty weak. I think it would have been pretty cool to see a female lead in this game.

You mean Tights or something of the sort which their origins can be tracked back to the Renaissance age???

Also pants or anything of the sort became a fashion item for women at the 20th century.

Besides that they were a lot before and still are (some) in this day of age religions and cultures that prohibit women and especially young girls to wear only skirts or dresses.

A pretty weak point for you may actually have some sense behind it if you think about it,if you can’t then don’t make judgement.

It actually doesn’t fit with the aesthetics of the game at all for all the above reasons…plus he gave another reason too why they didn’t go by their first choice if the later doesn’t please you ;)

@25 “Pants or anything of the sort became a fashion item for women at 20th century.”

There’s a lot of Indian art out that would like to argue otherwise, in which many women and girls were portrayed with knee-height garbs and pants.

The art style of Team Ico’s work is heavily inspired by ancient Indian imagery (indirectly or otherwise), and nowhere is that more apparent than in the garb being worn by the main character for The Lost Guardian.

A female character would look entirely natural in the same outfit that he is wearing… which is basically a dress in all but name. Just look at it.

The logic that a “boy would have a better grip” is a little moot when you consider that this is a game in which you ride around on a giant catbirdferretthing. It’s also just a flat-out lazy answer.

There hasn’t been a single game in the past five years that I’ve looked forward to more than this (except maybe Shadow of the Colossus), but the reasons they’ve provided for using a male character are incredibly weak regardless.

Women have good grip, they have to to not drop the frying pan.

I still really like the game and i can’t wait for it, but i gotta be honest. I don’t find these graphics all that impressive at all anymore. Especially in the beginning it all seems very low res. I know it will have a amazing atmopshere though but the graphics slightly dissapoint me.

    #28 4 years ago
  29. zoopdeloop

@26 Technically they weren’t pants by definition.
The art style of Team Ico’s work is heavily inspired by ancient Indian imagery (indirectly or otherwise)???Not even close. They’re inspired by a completely different culture which their garbs and clothing were consistent of mainly black and white.i let you figure that out and search for it if you’re that much interested about Ico’s games :)

  30. Michael O’Connor

@29 You’re actually thinking of the inspiration for the artwork used on the box-art, if I’m not mistaken.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. zoopdeloop

Not quite.there is one specific culture that the two previous games draw their inspiration especially on garments.Seems like it’s the same inspiration for TLG as well

  32. Galactic_Barret

Both excuses are plausible. PC or not, there are some things women just can’t do as well as men, physically, and vice-versa. Upper body strength, on average, is one area where males outperform females.

The skirt thing is simultaneously a bit lame as it is sensible, however it doesn’t really matter at all. He decided on a male protagonist, thats whom we’ll play as. Had the main been female, a dress is what she would have worn, regardless of cultural influences.

Think of it less as justification and more as trivial banter. Sometimes, it seems we forget that these are creative visions that few people should have a say in. Besides, has Ueda disappointed yet?
