The Halo: Reach launch – midnight openings, review scores, supermarket pricing, more

Monday, 13 September 2010 12:45 GMT By Johnny Cullen

After ten years working on the IP, Bungie says farewell to Halo with the launch of its final game, Halo: Reach, at midnight tonight.

Want to know about the openings? Planing on getting it with a fresh loaf down at the supermarket in the morning? We’ve got you covered.

You’re standing in the pissing rain at night for a game? Are you mad?

Retailers GAME and HMV have promised to open doors in stores around the UK. Main launches from GAME are at the Westfield Shopping Centre and Oxford Street in London.

Other stores will be open in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Dublin, Derry, Leeds, Belfast and more.

You can find launch details for GAME here, while HMV’s launches are over on MCV.

GameStation’s opening up for it as well. You can get all the details on the chain’s Reach effort here.

While you’re there getting your computer majob, get some milk

Once again, as with FIFA 10 and Modern Warfare 2 before it, Reach will have supermarkets cutting each others’ throats for the cheapest deal.

Sainsburys has the game on for £35, while Asda is selling it for £37.47. If you get it from the latter, you’ll have the option to buy a Reach hoodie for the bargain price of £9.

Tesco is selling it for £37.70, although as we reported last night, if bought with 2,100 MSP, the price will go down to £28.

Morrisons is selling it for the normal price of £39.99.

No regrets from Bungie

This may be the end of Bungie’s involvement in Halo, but the developer has said it has no regrets about the past ten years.

“I don’t think anyone at Bungie has specific regrets about anything that’s been done through the Halo series but everyone can look back and find things that they would probably do differently or improve upon if given a chance,” Bungie’s Brian Jarrard told CVG.

“That drive to constantly improve and outdo our last effort is definitely one of the forces that pushes our entire team to continually raise the bar.”

343 Industries now takes over the day-to-day running of the series, but if an outside developer were to develop a main Halo title, what would the studio’s thoughts be?

“Any developer who shares the spirit, passion, attention to detail and fan service that have come to define the series thus far would be in a good position to take the job.”

Multiplayer goes Silver this weekend only

Microsoft’s also announced it’s opening Live up to Silvers for Reach only, beginning this weekend.

From September 17-19, anyone who isn’t a Gold Live member can experience the full multiplayer experience of the game.

“No game is bigger then Halo,” says MGS’s Spencer

Forget your Call of Duties and your Grand Theft Autos: Halo’s the big stuff, according to Microsoft Games Studios boss Phil Spencer.

“When it comes to the size and scope of a franchise and especially the dedication of the fans, no game is bigger than ‘Halo,” said Spencer, who will co-host the keynote at Tokyo Game Show on Thursday.

Microsoft claimed today that excitement for Reach is as big as that for the launch of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Spencer added: “With Halo: Reach, we’re delivering on our promise to redefine blockbuster entertainment experiences and ultimately help make this year the biggest ever in Xbox history.”

Bungie has now said that those who’ve received their copies early won’t be penalised for playing right now.

In addition, Halo Waypoint has now been updated in preparation for Reach’s release.

Order the game online, line-up outside for a midnight launch tonight, whatever. Buy this game: the reviews say so.

And then watch a Spartan fly about Trafalgar Square. Why not?

We’ll update this throughout the day as we approach 12.00am BST.

You’re correct. They gave Halo/3 perfect scores (god knows what they were thinking/smoking). In that case expect a silly perfect score from them.

It’s always hilarious to watch people make assumptions about EDGE Magazine, and consistently get it wrong.

What a farse! UK mags/websites giving a game 9′s 10′s and they only played the game for barely a day (from 1pm until the early hours of the following morning) at a MS event in a London hotel.

Such reviews are nothing but incompetent, premature drivel.

  19. Michael O’Connor

@17 Long, donkey face? Is that the best you can come up with? If you’re going to insult me, at least come up with an accurate insult.

Better yet, educate *yourself* about what you’re talking about before you spout off about other people (or magazine’s) ignorance and stupidity. Cause you’re being little more than a very big pot complaining about the dark tint of a really small kettle.

I’m not even a big Halo fan (the only Halo product of any kind that I own is Halo 3) and even I agree with EDGE’s scores of the game.

People seem to very quickly dismiss the fact that EDGE also (rightfully) dismissed Halo 2 because of a number of design problems. People only think EDGE is deliberately controversial because they gave scores they don’t agree with or their friends told them about it. I doubt most of them have ever read a single issue of it in their lives.

But hey, it’s much easier to not apply critical thinking to your opinion and just going with what the crowd says, right?

    Ignorance is bliss.

@23 They are so hot damn Ps3 supporters that they said that Sony’s E3 presentation this year was the worst of 3 and last Sony’s E3 they lied a lot. They support no one. Not Xbox, Nintendo or Ps3 and Michael McWhertor is a HUGE Xbox 360 supporter. His favourite games are Mass Effect 1,2, Gears and e.t.c.

@DaMan, Why are you trolling? Halo is out, you can already embrace the POWA of the Masta Chief suit to kill little turtles with “pew-pew” guns. :D

@25 Much like people claim that EDGE is a “360 fanboy” magazine and biased against the PS3, despite the fact that it’s only given a perfect score to one 360 exclusive.

LittleBigPlanet, a PS3 exclusive, also received the coveted 10/10 score, as well as two Wii games (SMG1 and SMG2).

  53. spiderLAW

It actually doesn’t get to me. It was a serious question. I don’t understand the insanity and was hoping one could explain it to me, which you yourself hadn’t explained anything I hadn’t known already. And if you understood my comment you would see that i am specifically speaking of the ones to bash a single product over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. You see what i did there?

i could have just said over and over and it would have been suffice. Saying over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over is overkill lol.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion as well as voicing it, but being repetitive is just immature.

    #53 5 years ago

@52 I don’t think you’ll get a lot on those odds, considering that most people are giving it about a 9.

@52 Pretty much will be 10/10. It’s last Bungie’s game after all. But who knows really. The problem is here that there could be another reviewer. If Edge gives it 10/10 it’s not like Edge did it. It’s the reviewer.

@42, I like countless games, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Dawn of War, Uncharted, Assassins Creed, Left 4 Dead, Star Wars: Battlefront, Metal Gear Solid, Timesplitters, Resistamce, Ratchet & Clank & i enjoy the occasional Halo & Gears, also countless older games like Crash Bandicoot(Only Naughty Dog’s versions), Spyro the Dragon(Only Insomniac’s versions), Dino Crisis (til they fucked up with the 3rd one), Twisted Metal, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Pokemon (stadium & handheld) & Super Smash Bros(i ironically hate most of Nintendo’s characters though) among countless other gems i cannot think of right now, just thought that Goldeneye was overrated, not saying it’s a bad game, i just did not enjoy it

when i hear MGS i instantly think Metal Gear Solid, not Microsoft Games Studios, anyone else?
“as big as that for the launch of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace” but didn’t most fans condemn that movie? don’t get me wrong, i actually liked the phantom menaace, but i know most true star wars fans hated it, mainly for Ja Ja Binks & also the lack of Anakin’s built-in inhaler covering his crispy head replaced by a black & red dude with spikes & a double sided lightsaber

@53 I’ve seen, erm, ‘respected’, commentators repeat negative criticism ad nauseum, making the same point about the same game/franchise on the same platform again and again and again…

…the interesting thing is it’s often those same posters that find such behaviour distasteful in others.

With the greatest of respect, fellow commentator, it’s the internet. You can’t fix it, but at least there is an OFF switch. :)

  63. freedoms_stain

@57, it’s not a popular opinion, but one I very much agree with.

I’ve always felt similarly about the Halo series, its never really impressed me, I’ll still play, but once I’m finished the campaign I feel very little compulsion to return.

    #63 5 years ago
  64. naffgeek

@57 Seems to be a bit of a Sony leaning in those choices :).

I liked Goldeneye because it wasn’t just shoot the shit out of everything the secondary tasks were interesting too.

I pretty much just love games and Halo : Reach is just another way to have 9-10 hours of fun.

  65. Crysis

@64, yes Sony is probably my fav publisher, but i’m a gamer, i don’t care for all this fanboy shit, everyone who uses the words Phony, or Xbot are just as bad as the people they’re flaming, little ignorant kids!

You see, that’s a great reply! That makes much sense.
And that’s why I didn’t specify a person but we were in the topic of Halo so I pointed out the Halo Haters. It goes the same for the haters of any franchise or product that go out of their way to bash on it consistently. Respected poster or not, it gets old.

Yeah, the ignore button in my mind works most of the time but it also has a curiosity of its own.

@ 53: I just don’t see the point. I don’t like RTS games, but I don’t jump into every StarCraft thread and basically tell people they’re stupid and wrong to like it.

Same goes for realistic shooters – I can’t stand CoD, MoH, BF:BC etc etc, but I don’t lambaste everybody for looking forward to them. Those games have their audience, I respect that.

Which is exactly what Erthazus and his ilk lack – a sense of respect, both for games in general and more specifically for other users of this site that are legitimately looking forward to an upcoming/new game.

And if they’re just bashing these games “for fun”? Well, fuck off and go do it elsewhere so the rest of us can carry on sharing enthusiasm over a game we’re excited about.

    #68 5 years ago

Some people just enjoy playing the antagonist.

They enjoy winding people up and they revel in the infamy.

Arguing with them only fuels their desire to become louder and more aggressive.

I don’t understand what is to debate or argue about. Its a Halo game. Its a big deal because it is the last Bungie Halo game. And being objective it looks like a lot went into the game.

Safe bet to say it should sell squelions.

A couple of out loud thoughts pop into my mind:

What if Bungie was an exclusive Sony dev studio
–would Halo still sell on PSN
–would the same haters still hate the franchise

What is going to happen with the first Bungie MultiPlat game
—I doubt it will be as good
——-Even Led Zeplen made only one Stairway to Heaven

Will another genere replace the FPS crazy
—It can’t come fast enough for me

Is anyone else tired of OMP FPS yet
—L4D, CoD, Halo, KZ, MoH, BFBC2
    ————-same food different flavors
    —isn’t a 3rdPS just a FPS with a zoomed out cam

Can other people hear what I say
—when I say it in my head
    —will they listen
    ——-do I care

    What was the game again
    —oh yea Halo

Wonder what kind of DLC it will have
    —map packs
——they prolly already have those done

Shouldn’t they have been on the disc then
    —preorder bonus
    ——extra revenue

What did I eat for lunch
    ——thought it was meatloaf
    —was it old

    Too late
    —better shower

“oh well, I guess it’s not so bad being a retard after all”

So it’s not too bad being a retard? Ok, i will call you retard than :D

@Gheritt White, “Which is exactly what Erthazus and his ilk lack – a sense of respect”

Speak for yourself. Can you speak for yourself? You just can’t and you are trying to critisize me that i have no sense of respect, but i have.
Maybe you don’t like Starcraft 1 but it’s still a great game no matter what you say. It did a lot of revolutionary stuff and you know it. I’m not a big fan of Blizzard’s SC2 and still playing that shitty game. Nothing new was created in this game. Absolutely nothing new and even if i like that universe i can say where this game sucks (Well, SC2 sucks a lot actually). Same old great game in the past, but these days are over for now. Over. Same with Halo.

i like realistic shooters… and also i like Sci-Fi games, but not shitty games.
We had a lot of conversation with you about Halo and you had a good link with the opinion about why “Halo sucks”. I played a lot of games. I’m a gamer and maybe Halo is fun for someone (i mean every game is fun, right?), but not for me for the reasons that it’s old in everything and dated. Still, people praise this game like a second Jesus or Justin Bieber. Someone like it, someone don’t of course. But there are a lot of people who critisize Halo and that shows that with game there is something not right.
What is not right? Stupid forced marketing campaigns from Microsoft. There are much better Sci-Fi FPS or TPS games than Halo and they deserve much better than that lifeless piece of … Let the game speak for it self, let it sell. But i’m doubt about that. Without Microsoft previous PR strength, that pile of crap won’t move a bit.

PS: I lost three times in a row in one session. I’m so mad.. >=( need to try harder.

@75 I don’t think its entirely appropriate description to be honest. Some of the people apparently ‘talking sense’ in this topic can be seen being deliberately antagonistic in other topics.

As usual, it all seems to stem around which game/platform/franchise the topic centres around as to whether they’ll be the antagonist or the peace-keeper.

Funny how it always seems to boil down to the same thing every time isn’t it? :)

(I’d add that once a witch-hunt has begun (as is starting to occur here) those doing the hunting only tend to escalate things under the guise of crusading for decorum but tend to blame their own behaviour on their target.)

    @73 and @80
    RE: FPS/TPS.

Third person is great for spacial awareness and very useful in games with good cover systems. Gears & Uncharted for example – some other games like Rainbow Six Vegas which are primarily FPS but switch to TPS when you take cover.

There are a few titles where the third person view serves little purpose though. Warhawk for example – which I enjoyed – I think the third person view added nothing and if it was a FPS it would have been better.

    What Lambda said about FPS/TPS

I will likly own Halo Reach in the end. And I still enjoy a good round of BFBC2 and MNC. But less and less. And it makes me sad to think that for now till the cows come home we will have those game mechanics behind our biggest game releases.

Ya know what would blow me away?

I mean really sell to me.

    Champions of Norrath III.

With lots of classes, 4player co-op online, DLC Expansions, lots of customizable skill trees, maybe a multi class combo like Titan Quest.

I would buy that game and play it so much I would wear out the dvd.

But i don’t see that happening.

I will be getting Tourchlight for XBL this holiday, and will be getting Diablo III for PC when that happens.

There is just so much focus on OMP FPS with marketable DLC map packs it pushes everything else out. And yes, I am geting very tired of that.

All my posts are OPINION, but as i said again. Just look at this mess. It’s already a second page and there are a lot of folks including me and YOU arguing about Halo success.
I never said that i disrespect your opinion or said: You suck, you like Halo.
You like Halo and want it to feel like CE? Cool. Alright. I have no problem with that, except the fact that this game is forced with PR. Do you want to know real Halo scores? Go see Halo 2 scores on metacritic with Pc reviews, hardly you will call it a success. Game is bad. Or you won’t agree with ? After Halo 2 no one wanted next gen Halo’s to be on PC because of this. Thats just an example of the reality where marketing never works.

    “- syntax error?”

    In your brain? Maybe.

“hardly, E. what we have here is you also lacking practically any reading (and writing) skills whatsoever.”

True. I’m not a master at English when i learn it by myself and i live in the country where no one speaks that language.
But you sir-Retard are incapable of thinking, making decisions and just speaking on the subject. You are just an infantile 18-20 year old idiot. If you have something clever to tell about the subject than do so. Oww, but it’s not going to happen because your brain have a size of a berry. Shut up already. Your wasting my and your time.

“Be a contributor, not a detractor.”

In your words: every game is awesome and you don’t need to comment that something is bad. R-r-r-right. I really don’t care. It is the internet and i have my opinion on something. Don’t like it? Don’t comment to me.

Ignoring the battle elsewhere in this thread I’d say well done for making it available to Silver accounts.

I wish we lived in a world without spin, though. “no game bigger than Halo” apart from all the other bigger selling franchises with just as mental fans and hype surrounding them that is.

But hey, it is a biggie so I’ll let it slide.

Oh, and Edge will be either 9 or 10 unless they decide to crack down on the SP – although they didn’t with Halo 3 so I just can’t judge which way they’ll go here.
