Bungie developing new engine for next project

Bungie has said it’s creating a new engine for its incoming Actvision project.

Speaking in a Develop interview, Bungie communications manager Brain Jarrard said the company is against the idea of using the same tech for its future projects.

“I think it goes hand-in-hand with our independent spirit,” he said. “Just like we don’t want to develop a game off someone else’s IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That’s going to be our position for the foreseeable future.”

Jarrard said development on the engine was already underway: “Yeah, [the new engine is] actually in development, so I would say it’s in a stage where, technically we’re still at the end of a pre-production mode.”

He went on to state that “full weight” of the studio was now on their unannounced title for Activision since Halo: Reach is complete.

No details have been released on the Activision game at all as yet. The ten-year tie-in was announced in April of this year.

Thanks 1UP.

@2 You serious? They barely made next gen engine for the Halo title. I’m so interested in what product they are going to bring multiplatform.

TBH Freedom the graphics were never a big thing for me halo wise.
Game play in it I love.

  11. freedoms_stain

that’s fine reask, but when it comes to consoles I expect devs to be trying to push the capabilities of what can be done on the platform.

For a studio to develop 3 games over 5ish years and really do nothing to push the platform, particularly when they are developing for a single platform I find that a wee bit lazy.

    #11 5 years ago
  12. reask

Sorry freedom but I would disagree with u on bungie been lazy.
I mean look at the various modes in the games surely that has to be a plus.
Graphics are not the best ok but the game play overall is second to none imho.

    #12 5 years ago
  13. freedoms_stain

I’m not detracting from the gameplay (although I would say it’s second to an awful lot tbh) but they’re a large very well funded studio, there’s really no excuse for not doing their best technically imo. They could have upped their staffing, they chose not to.

    #13 5 years ago
  14. DSB

@11 Bungie were probably one of the biggest originators in showing what could be done with FPS design on a console. By keeping the gameplay simple and accessible, they basically gave you a shooter experience to rival what you might get on a PC.

I remember when it came out, and I didn’t know anyone that wasn’t blown away by that.

Halo is never gonna be a complex game, and it isn’t meant to be. It’s just meant to be fun, which is why it’s succeeded imo.

    #14 5 years ago
  15. manamana

DSB is right on the money, imo. Funfunfun I had for the last hours. Who cares about top-of-the-line-grfx when it comes to so much fun and smooth gameplay?!

    #15 5 years ago
  16. freedoms_stain

reiterating how good (you think) the gameplay is doesn’t address my underlying point that a truly excellent developer is capable of producing games with exceptional gameplay AND pushing the limits of their hardware platform.

Look at what the exclusive PS3 developers are turning up with vs what Bungie are producing.

The best devs will push the boundaries on all fronts.

Bungie don’t and that’s why they’re 2nd rate in my mind.

Been playing Reach for the past few hours, Forge is incredible, matchmaking is fun, the campaign is alright, too bad the end has already been spoiled for me, my m8 asked me what to do in a mission, i didn’t even get up to, he figuered it out then told me the ending, why!?
(anyone feel free to add me on “Chris2pher Jack”, I’m good in this game, but far from great, normally get a + kill ratio)

    #21 5 years ago
  22. Blerk

Chances are their current engine is pretty much tied to the 360 given that it’s been kicking around since the early days. Better to start afresh now that they’re multi-platform than try to shoe-horn the old engine into a different box, I’d guess.

    #22 5 years ago
  23. DrDamn

A good few missions into the main campaign now and I’ve tried a little multiplayer too. I like the updated Reach engine, in the main it’s very solid, crisp and clean. It’s very well suited to the game. It creaks a little in some of the cut scenes and one very notable time in the main campaign itself.

It does also still have some very strong points to it too. The LOD system is very good, allowing for some big landscapes and levels with a lot of detail being chucked about. It also handles a nice number of enemies/friendlies in a battle too. Texture detail is also a strong point, particularly up close to objects.

It’s also worth remembering the lack of heavy scripting and more freeform approach to some of the levels means it has to allow for a lot more possibilities than some other games of this type.

That all said I’ll be interested to see what they come up with for the next title. I think the core basis which has evolved through the series does restrict them in some areas. There must be things holding them back which would be difficult to change without a large overhaul.

What difficulty are ye playing it on guys?
I read in reviews that this one is notably tougher.

  25. DrDamn

I’m playing on Normal first run through – I’ll up it to Heroic then possibly Legendary after that. Think I’ll need proper co-op for Legendary though.

I actually think it’s been pretty easy so far – not too tough. Couple of deaths but not much. More caused by poor friendly AI than anything else. Enemy AI is great, friendly AI sucks badgers. Can’t drive or shoot for toffee which makes sections which rely on driving and shooting tougher than they should be. Would be nice if they understood the tactics for hunters too. Either draw them out and I’ll flank or flank when I draw them out – don’t just stand next to me! (Hence the need to play with real players co-op on the tougher difficulty levels).

  26. Gadzooks!

The fact of the matter is the Halo engine has always prioritised gameplay over visuals, and that’s just the way it should be.

There are pretty games with the absolute gameplay basics like Killzone and CoD. These games have just enough AI to fool the player into thinking they are having any effect on the outcome in between the set-pieces. They are the game equivalent of movies like 2012, day after tomorrow, etc. A fun spectacle with absolutely no thought required.

Halo is the other end of the spectrum. It has incredibly challenging AI that adapts to the environment, what remains of their squad, what weapons the player is using, availability of backup, terrain advantages, etc. There is not another game that has even a fraction of the AI intelligence that Halo has, and AI of that standard and scale comes at a CPU cycle cost.

Environmental scale is magnitudes larger in Halo than in the ‘pretty’ FPS games. Open levels feel like open terrain, not corridors with a skybox instead of wall textures.

Point is you do not get both elements in a console engine because devs have finite horsepower to work with. There is room enough for both types of FPS and the many millions of Halo fans, who are fans for the very fact that Halo is gameplay over visuals, are incentive enough for Bungie/343 to keep the perfect formula that Halo has.

Halo will never get dumbed down to appease pixel whores. Gameplay wins every time.

“There is not another game that has even a fraction of the AI intelligence that Halo has, and AI of that standard and scale comes at a CPU cycle cost.”

Like running, gunning and standing? WOW, such a cool AI :D I remember a firefight video where two grunts or big monsters standing and someone shoots with grenade launcher behind.
What AI is doing? Standing and doing nothing :D

    “Gameplay wins every time.”

    Halo gameplay:

Run, duck, jump, shoot with “pew pew type of guns”, jeeps, flying mounts. Just wow… Sure, thats too much of a gameplay that was created……. like 10 years ago. Battlefield games have this for years, Unreal Tournament have this for years. But Halo… MAGIC gameplay :D

There are hundreds of games like Halo on PC. This is a good example when Halo 2 came to PC: 72% on Metacritic. After that Halo will never appear there, because of BAD visuals, GAMEPLAY, story :D

trololo :D so funny on this one. Keep believeing yourself

    @reask, DrDamn

A little over halfway through Heroic so far. AI is definitely a step up over previous Halo games, but HP balance has changed considerably.

Brutes are a pushover, except chieftans with Armor lock who are bastards.

Grunts have smaller headshot hitboxes and increased resistance to body shots.

High ranking Elites are much tougher than any Elites before, sometimes shrugging off a plasma grenade sticking plus a couple of clips.

Splash damage from all weapons is massive compared to before. Covvies with concussion rifles are basts!

Oh, and the space combat is fapping awesome! I want a full game of it!

@34, Yeah like Invincible Tiuger 3D that is anaglyph :D is a TRUE 3D on the 360 :D i remember this like yesterday when you tried to prove me that 360 SUPPORTS (360, not invincible tiger 3d) more 3D than other console.
and Morphological AA is done on the 360. I see tons of games with this thing. Maybe you will show me one on 360? =D
Controller latency? You mean that one that was DESIGNED specifically to be that thing? :D

“You have no place in a discussion about game mechanics.”

Oh king, you devastated my reputation on the internet. :D If you are a Halo Pro, maybe lets play some Unreal tournament 3? Or you “MASTER” scarry that your ass will be executed in 3 minutes and you will come back to the game where everything is slow paced with standard mechanics? :D Just sayin’

@reask, i’m just playing with fanboy. Thats it. Not saying that Halo is CRAP now, just trying to say that what Gadzooks think about Halo was done like 10 years ago. No offence on Halo or you really. Good luck playing. But that guy is just pure comedy :D

  37. Gadzooks!

    @reask

There have been a couple of sections in Heroic which I’d say are harder than any Legendary section I’ve played, barring the snipers in Halo 2, and some sections which have been easier than previous Heroics.

Overall I’d say Reach Heroic is probably not all that much different from Halo 3, but the difficulty spikes are pretty huge in places.

It’s hard to explain, but if this makes any sense: You have to work harder to get the enemies or yourself in a kill position (e.g. jetpack elites arent the easy targets jetpack brutes were), but they arent much more difficult to kill when you do (barring high-ranking Elites and Brute Chieftans)

I have a 3D TV – I have played Invincible Tiger on it on a 360. It was proper stereoscopic 3D. It was also shite – but that is besides the point. It supports anaglyph too yes – but it does support stereoscopic. Avatar is another game on the 360 which does stereoscopic 3D.

    #39 5 years ago
  40. Gadzooks!

“Yeah like Invincible Tiuger 3D that is anaglyph”

No, stereoscopic 3D. It does many 3D modes, or are you suggesting the supported 3D modes document on thier website is a lie?

    .

“i remember this like yesterday when you tried to prove me that 360 SUPPORTS (360, not invincible tiger 3d) more 3D than other console.”

It’s a technicalicty, but it is a fact. As new TV’s are released that situation will change, but the PS3′s lack of vertical scaler prevents 3D support on many 768p sets.

    .

“Morphological AA is done on the 360.”

Not yet, but you said it couldnt be done. It’s an AA algorithm for fucks sakes! Explain how you think that is tied to the PS3′s hardware. Go, I dare you.

    .

“Controller latency? You mean that one that was DESIGNED specifically to be that thing?”

Don’t pretend to understand what is being discussed. You do not, you have proved that time and again.

    .

“If you are a Halo Pro, maybe lets play some Unreal tournament 3″

If you are an Unreal Pro, maybe lets compare apples to oranges? Tool.

    @Gadzooks!
I thought those pesky grunts weren’t such a push over this time. Loving it so far. I can see why comparisons that have been drawn to ODST. The levels so far are some classic Halo set-ups. I think that’s largely a good thing mind – didn’t want full on change. These are some of the things which make Halo – you couldn’t not do them in a definitive Halo game. I think the level design does bode well for moving up the difficulty levels more than previous games too. A lot of the sections are more open and the approaches needed will vary quite a bit as difficulty ramps up.

“or are you suggesting the supported 3D modes document on thier website is a lie?”

Invincible Tiger is a true statistic of what console can do? =D

“It’s a technicalicty, but it is a fact”

Prove link that the PS3’s lack of vertical scaler prevents 3D support on many 768p sets. :D
    or it never happen :D

“Not yet, but you said it couldnt be done.”

If someone could do it we would see games with MAA on the 360. It’s done on PS3 because it uses CPU and we all know how Cell is powerefull to execute something bigger in scope than someone’s traditional multicore processor.
Until that happens you are wrong :D i see MAA on the PS3 ONLY!

“If you are an Unreal Pro, maybe lets compare apples to oranges?”

  43. Gheritt White

@42: Actually, no. Unreal and Halo handle physics completely differently – impacting weapons, character models and more besides. It’s not simply that one is faster than the other.

“If someone could do it we would see games with MAA on the 360.”

Or the regular AA the 360 GPU does is perfectly sufficient and cheaper to implement so there really is no benefit to doing it?

  47. Gadzooks!

“Invincible Tiger is a true statistic of what console can do?”

It’s conclusive proof of my point, which is that the 360 is capable of true stereoscopic 3D.

    .

“Prove link that the PS3’s lack of vertical scaler prevents 3D support on many 768p sets.”

I already did, a couple of times, but you are too stupid to understand. I may as well explain it to a house brick.

    .

“If someone could do it we would see games with MAA on the 360.”

Why? It’s far more efficient to use the 360′s Edram to do 4x MSAA.

    .

    “You see? you affraid”

Are you seriously saying that you think some idiot teenager challenging me OVER THE INTERNET is going to scare me? You are too young to understand this, but challenging someone over the internet is the single lamest thing one human can do. Congratulations on your eternal shame and embarrasment.

The only thing you do is make me piss myself laughing, you little dipshit.

Besides, I dont game on the PC. I also dont own Unreal on the 360.

    .

“Basics in these games are the same. One is faster, second is slower and simple”

And if ever there was conclusive proof that you know nothing at all about games, there it is.

I sometimes wonder if you actually own a games machine of any kind, you know so little and get so many fundamental facts wrong.

    @ Erth.
I will enjoy it I reckon as FPS is my fave type game and Halo does it well imo.

Erthazus. You couldn’t own a tapeworm. Even a tapeworm would want to move out once it had grown to a sufficient size from feeding off the insant noodles and coffee you use to sustain yourself throughout your marathon gaming, masturbation and self loathing sessions.

Do you cry yourself to sleep at night knowing you’ll never be able to function in society? That you would be shunned by members of your own species let alone the opposite sex? That you will never find love, and will spend the rest of your days alone and unable to conduct relationships without the use of a keyboard and mouse?

Instead of hating Erthazus, we should pity him and use him as an example. When they find his bloated and rotting corpse still sat in front of his PC several years from now, in his festering basement apartment, smeared in excrement; the pictures should be used to warn parents of the dangers of ‘cybersports’.
