Man from “Fort Gay” banned from XBL by “mistake”

Microsoft’s said a decision to ban an American man from Xbox Live because he lives in a town called Fort Gay was a “mistake” and the company’s going to “make it right.”
Xbox Live rules boss Stephen Toulouse was has admitted the decision was flawed.
“Someone took the phrase ‘fort gay WV’ and believed that the individual who had that was trying to offend, or trying to use it in a pejorative manner,” Toulouse explained. “Unfortunately, one of my people agreed with that. … When it was brought to my attention, we did revoke the suspension.”
He added: “In this very, very specific case, a mistake was made, and we’re going to make it right.”
Josh Moore, 26, is not impressed, however.
“At first I thought, ‘Wow, somebody’s thinking I live in the gayest town in West Virginia or something.’ I was mad … It makes me feel like they hate gay people,” he told the AP.
“I’m not even gay, and it makes me feel like they were discriminating.”
Fort Gay mayor, David Thompson, got involved. He was similarly annoyed.
“It was so inappropriate for them,” he said, “they wouldn’t even say the word. They said, ‘that word’.
Microsoft has been dogged by issues concerning the use of homosexual terminology on Xbox Live, but most recently has allowed people to express their sexuality in their GamerTags.
Thanks, EG.

It’s good to live in a country like mine where homosexuality is prohibited by law. I feel pity with USA. They accepted this illness as something normal and now look at these shitstorms coming regularly.
What’s interesting here though is that MS employee didn’t even check if the place existed.

@3, Nah, he’s just another ignorant person ‘brainwashed’ into thinking it’s wrong, granted i think man-on-man sex is gross, doesn’t change anything about who a person is outside of bed, so i don’t get why people make such a big deal out of this, most people would reply with something like “it’s an insult to god” or some BS, which is why i’m not a fan of any form of religion, no matter the original intentions, it’ll be constantly misinterperated into something that it is not & cause more harm than the good it does, sure a little faith is always good, but not when it’s linked to violence, racism & sexicm, also hate when religion & politics get mixed together, it truley makes me sick when politicians try doing this, it’ll end up introducing wacky laws, eventually turning the system into a dictatorship after a few decades or maybe even years.

@2 In which country on the Arabian Peninsula do you live?
@6Hommosexualism must be banned, it is against the nature.
Some days ago in my country(Bulgaria) there was a public scandal because a Metropolitan bishop gave an medal to a poilitician who is against hommosexualism.

@BULArmy, i feel sorry for your narrow-mindedness, & should mention that animals do this themselves, so it’s natural no matter way how you spin it, if you wanna get technical, we originated from asexual organisms, back then, heterosexuals did not exist &, there’s nothing wrong with a penis going into another males anus, other than the image or thought of myself being involved on either side *shudder* so there’s NOTHING wrong with it, i just don’t want to be involved

i dont see how it makes ms seem like they hate gay people (come on now..), plenty of other non offensive words get banned all the time on XBL in peoples profiles
when it happend with that lesbo way back people argued why do you need to announce your gay in your profile etc, but then i thought i have seen some spitefull stuff on some xbl members profiles and nothing gets done about that, then again they have delt with offensive names on xbl

Being Gay, is okay. =D
Most of the people are just jealous, they want to suck a cock so desperately, but they simply refuse because ‘their’ society tells them it’s wrong. Simply put: They are a bunch of pussies.
And then Jealousy turns to Hate. “Why can he suck cock and not I? I WANT A COCK NOAW!”
Just watch the US News. Every time it’s some Gayhating Politician that who comes out of his closet.

MS aren’t discriminating, they have a set of banned words & gay is one of them, they’re not saying that gay people are bad, they’ve just aknowledged that in this modern day, it’s used in an insulting word more than anything

Oh, and moderators get off your lazy asses and moderate the homophobes above. That is not acceptable behaviour.

Lol. Nice picture.
I agree with both of Crysis posts.
I may not be gay, but I think that what people choose to do in their beds is and always should be up to them (as long as it is between two -or more :p- consenting adults or at least people of appropriate age).
We spent our lives faking so many things, no one should have to fake the way they love.
I feel sorry for people like Lord Gremlin, for the way they were brought up to hate (rather than to accept and respect) what’s different from them.
Hating someone simply because you don’t get that people are not all the same, is probably the reason for 80% of the world’s wars.
And MS should be ashamed of themselves. I mean, for crying out loud, the word “gay” has been in the english vocabulary far longer than it has meant “homosexual”. You think they’d know that…but no.
In their stupid effort to erase all sex-related words from profiles, they’ve jumped the shark one too many times.

“And MS should be ashamed of themselves. I mean, for crying out loud, the word “gay” has been in the english vocabulary far longer than it has meant “homosexual”. You think they’d know that…but no.”
Just because the word ‘gay’ has alternate meanings that doesnt mean that genuine homophobic use of the word should not be moderated.
Better to err on the side of caution I’d say.

@Gadzooks
I agree on the moderation of the homophobic use of the word and, quite frankly, I don’t really understand why anyone would want to wear their sexuality on their sleeve (I mean I’ve never used a username or whatever with the word “straight” in it :p), especially in gaming where it really does not have any effect whatsoever, but I guess that too falls into the category “things I’ll never understand” :p
However, there is a fine line between “moderating homophobic content” and “being a homophobic company” and, in my opinion, MS has shown that sometimes, even with good intentions at heart, things are way too ambiguous to actually get your message through.
Words are just words. We give them bad or good meanings.

Well it all comes down to numbers in the end. With such a massive user base on XBL there simply have to be some automated, blanket rules.
Obviously a human can pick out legitimate uses of a word from offensive uses, but employing enough humans to get the job done might not be feasible.
“there is a fine line between “moderating homophobic content” and “being a homophobic company””
The line here is being drawn by intent, not action. The stance in this case is very clear, which is protecting people from abuse and not excluding a social group.

But if you read the article someone definitely did look at it and made a qualitative decision, but rather than, say, erasing the profile’s location information and kicking an e-mail to the linked address to confirm their suspicions — or even spending 5 seconds Googling the location to see if it was real — they instead chose to suspend a paying customer’s account without consultation.
Sure mistakes will be made, but my beef is with a system that treats anything mildly suspicious as guilty rather than bothering to actually check in with their customers before dishing out the punishment.

Can we call them homosexuals, Fuck I like the word gay being used as happy. I saw a rainbow the other day and was in awe cause its an amazing thing to look at. Then I see a bunch of lesbos with rainbow color belts and all of a sudden its their sign now to let everyone else know they are homosexuals. Get the hell out of here!
FUCK THAT! I want the rainbow back as a general sign from GOD. And stop calling them gay. I want that word back too, as the meaning happy. Not all homosexuals are gay (happy) let me tell you that.

Of course there were no rainbows before Christianity. Everybody knows this. Jesus copyrighted the rainbow back in 25 AD.
Maybe Christians should just get over their fuckfaced sense of entitlement, and spend some more time praying and less time spewing venom at everybody else.

@36 DSB has a hard on for me. Just like may twats on this site. As soon as I post something they consider controversial they see fit to attack my comment.
If you take out the GOD part (the only issue they have the dumb fuck atheist) anyone can still understand my argument with homosexuals being attached to the word gay. Lets stop calling them gay and call the homosexuals. I would like to use the word gay once in a while and not have people offended.
Its like the Blacks who call themselves the N-word but get offended when another race calls them that. ??? Its just stupid. Stop calling homosexuals gay. If you won the lottery tomorrow for 250 million you would be gay as hell, not a fucking homosexual.
