Kinect: Scanning being saved for later, says Kudo

Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda’s confirmed to Eurogamer that Kinect’s object scanning feature for won’t be available at launch.
Instead, he admitted it will be coming after the motion camera launches in November.
“Being able to digitise real-world objects and take them into the virtual world – we saw a little bit of that at E3 last year, but it’s not stuff that we have in any of the launch games right now, and I think we’re going to see a lot more games start using that as well as we go forward,” he said.
The feature was first shown in a B-roll video when the tech was first shown at E3 last, showing a teenager scanning a skateboard into a skating game.
Kinect launches on November 10 in the UK.

And by later he means never. Because essentailly being a fully featured 3D scanner with the ability to turn objects into low polly models for game use seems slightly unrealistic for a current gen game console.
Scanning a barcode to generate a premade object or trigger DLC on the other hand is verry possible but that is ofcourse not what was shown in the video.

I always thought it was more a case of getting textures rather than building low level polygon models.

@4 but that’s not really fully scanning in your objects. That’s just the same thing EA sports games have been doing for years. Take a picture of your face and poorly splash it across a pre made model.
Not really worth claiming as a feature for Kinect.

@6 Agreed. But I never expected anything else from it as I agree that would be asking way too much.
But asking someone to show their real life sk8 b0ard (is hip despite age) and then texture an ingame version with an image of it is doable.
So it’s a bit weird they aren’t doing that…

@8 And I live in Sweden so there is no telling if it will ever be turned on…

Perhaps I’ll be able to scan my cat into Kinectimals so the game can apply a hideously unnatural facial expression and huge, bulbous eyes to its virtual doppelgänger.

No object scanning, no foreign language voice recognition, no Milo, no fast Minority Report control, no lip reading, no innovative gameplay…
Does Kinect actually have anything that has been promised on E3 last year?

I’ve had Kinect for a week now and honestly the technology shown off in the tech demo is a whole lot better than what is actually being released. That’s if the tech demo technology exists
