Versus XIII “being developed specifically for the PlayStation 3,” says Nomura

Versus XIII

Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura has said the game’s “being developed specifically for the PlayStation 3,” and if there was a multi-plat version it would be a port.

“Multi-platform is when you start development on a game with the assumption of optimizing for multiple platforms,” he tweeted.

“Porting is something that’s done after you’ve developed a game specifically for a particular platforms. The debate over porting is decided by the management based off the current market and the costs. All I can say right now as a developer is that Versus is being developed specifically for the PlayStation 3.”

The game will get a small showing at TGS next week.

Square has continuously said Versus XIII is “For PLAYSTATION 3 Only Worldwide” in trailers.

A 360 version has been constantly rumoured, however.

It was announced this morning by Square Enix that Versus’s big brother, Final Fantasy XIII, was coming to Xbox 360 for Japan in December, nearly a year after being released as a PS3-exclusive in the country.

The game’s 360 version came out day and date with the PS3 version here in Europe and America.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Its not at TGS. So don’t care. All he is doing is just shooting the breeze.

Everybody tells me this Final Fantasy is going to be very different to the others in gameplay and stuff…what does that mean? I love the pic above but I’m not really into Final Fantasy (don’t like JRPG but I LOVE Final Fantasy’s art work).

Why don’t they just announce the 360 version. It’s obviously coming. Get this stupid circus over with.

Versus is going to have zero impact on either console’s future, so just annouce it already.

This tweet screams ‘it’s going to 360 aswell’.

‘decided by the management based off the current market and the costs’

Roughly translated ‘I like PS3, but I’ve been working on this for 5 years now, it’s expensive and my bosses are pissed’

TGS announcement at the MS presser.

Has a 360 version been rumoured? I totally expect there to be one — S-E would be leaving money on the table otherwise — but are there actual rumours about or just common sense kicking in?

Anyway, hopefully they put a bit more effort into the port this time.

Think Kingdom Hearts. Its not going to be Turn based like FFXIII, also they said it will have a world map.

One of the oldest and most out-dated mechanics in gaming.

All we need is a decent story and gameplay. If Tetsuya Nomura is at the helm, it’s not going to have the former. So the only thing it’s going to have going for it is the latter.

Considering Square Enix’s track record so far this generation, I’m not holding my breath for that either.

I completely agree w/6. It will help SE recover development costs to publish to both platforms. 360 is easy because its similarities to a PC (or so I’ve heard). Go ahead and do it.

I hope Versus give me more of a reason to finish it than 13 proper. I just don’t want the grind right now.

Glad2here that. Give the 360 fans there 7 disk edition like 6 months after the PS3′s drop. Nomura is the man, and his product will show. I really lose a lot of respect from square, but as long as they keep Nomura they got a chance.

If it’s anything nearly as cool as FFXIII, we’re all blessed.

Exclusive first… then the 3 disc 360 version thats very fair.

Since making multi-platform from the start causes a game to get delayed longer since the developement would seem different. Plus the square enix tools that allows games multi-platform will come in to play once the ps3 version is done.. and possibly release.

@5,7: its not turn based this time. More like an action, fighting jrpg. Think it will be awesome. I loved dissidia. I believe this will become an uberpimped ff crazy fighting adventure.

Finally, perhaps we’ll get a good game. And a really great PS3 exclusive (everybody knows that Nomura hates 360 & Microsoft).
That said, SE can always port the game, but such port will be sub-par, even worse than FFXIII.

i think they will play it safe this time to convince people that it is actually designed specifically for the ps3 and it will not be affected by the 360 unlike what happened with XIII where many people had their doubts and were disappointed with SE and the game.

So don’t expect a 360 announcement any time soon.Maybe after the ps3 version release or at best a few months before the ps3 release

As long as they’re not restricting the game to a certain amount of discs it will not affect the ps3 version and the result may actually be good.much better from XIII

Are people really still clinging to the ‘it was the 360 version that made FFXIII rubbish’ thing? :-D

Interesting choice of words from Nomura there, not ‘exclusively’ but ‘specifically’, “All I can say right now“, etc.

Regardless, my interest in this title has basically evaporated after such a long period of absolutely nothing happening and FFXIII turning out to be a bit pony. Unless they can come up with some solid evidence of a top-notch game to make me care again, I’m going to presume that it’s never actually going to come out.

don’t port that shit till a year later. don’t delay it. give it to us in 50GB blu-ray disc and well, don’t cut the content like what happened with FFXIII. big god damn let down knowing they went from their promise of filling the 50GB to just the 25GB and so much content was cut. we all know why.

    WTB a real RPG please.

    #26 4 years ago
  27. Erthazus

@25 I’m sure that something was cut from the development because of DVD disc space. SE said that they had a lot of stuff and wanted to make FF XIII-X2 so all cut content could be there.

+ i’m sure about the port time. From the beggining it was announced as a Ps3 game, than after year or e.t.c. they started to port 360 version. SE wanted a Simultaneous release for two platforms and only Japan got it to play first.

+ i remember from earlier TGS, Nomura said that he wanted to implement SIXAXIS thing to the game. So i’m interested to see if this thing will be cut too.

  28. zoopdeloop

@25 Blerk people get really suspicious over things if you give them a reason to be.
SE gave multiple reasons, especially this gen.
Fake-altered photos and commercials, controversial announcements, interviews e.t.c can you blame these people?

I think XIII would have been of the same quality if it was exclusive to one system but there’s a possibility it may had a little bit more potential. After all it was SE who announced not long after the 360 announcement that they don’t want to exceed a 3dvd limit for the game, they seemed to be very strict about it and given the fact that the game was heavily compressed to fit on 3 discs i’d say people rightfully believe SE may have restricted the overall project after that.

  29. Blerk

I just feel that the blame is misplaced. FFXIII took too long and wasn’t the game that most people wanted it to be. How can that be anyone’s fault other than SquareEnix’s? Their RPG output this generation has been flakey at best, diabolical at worst – even the stuff that was exclusive to a single machine.

It seems just as likely that the cut content from FFXIII was because of a lack of time rather than ‘obviously’ because of a lack of space. They’d already spent far, far too long on the game and just getting it out of the door would’ve been their first priority. The somewhat shoddy 360 port pretty much shows that they didn’t give it much love and probably started it quite late in the day, by which point the game would’ve already been pretty much what it was.

The fact that Versus seems to be following the exact same development pattern is not encouraging. I’d like to think that it’s going to be awesome at the end of all this, but there’s no evidence whatsoever to support that at the minute. For what it’s worth, I hope it turns out to be the game that the fans want it to be and if it remaining a PS3 exclusive is the only way for that to happen then that’s absolutely what they should do.

But everyone seems somewhat desperate to blame XIII’s problems on Microsoft when the fingers should absolutely be pointing at SquareEnix themselves.

  30. OlderGamer

    11 + 29 = spot on.

I would like to add that perhaps people should reavaluate SquareEnix. There are not the RPG leading devs/pubs they once were. I feel they have lost touch and slowly have been slipping away from anything remotly close to relevent.

SNES, PSx, PS2 = different story.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. zoopdeloop

Off course the blame is entirely on SE,Microsoft has nothing to do with it.Microsoft is just doing business which is fair…it’s entirely up to SE how they will handle things…and they’re not handling it too well this gen.

Plus they show a lot of disrespect to consumers and specifically to a certain userbase with lies and deception.
Going multiplatform to expand their audience is fair and good but favoring constantly one userbase over the other(while deceiving the latter)isn’t

As for XIII and it’s cut content i don’t think it would have made it to the ps3 even if it was exclusive. With the Blu ray capacity given to them they could have only designed a bit less linear game at best, let’s not forget how Star Ocean(which was a less linear game) worked out on 360 switching discs back and forth, they surely wanted to avoid that for XIII.Again it’s not Microsoft’s fault or the format’s fault so to speak rather than the developers themselves.
SE’s development skills are questionable this gen…and as you mentioned also the lack of time and how they use it has something to do with it

    Edit: @30 Exactly OG

  32. Blerk

They’ve been on the slide for a while, though – their PS2 games weren’t a patch on their PSOne games either. Persona 3 kicked the shit out of anything that SE produced last generation, for instance.

As time has gone by they’ve become much more about the graphics and the story than about the actual game, especially with FF. They need to take a long, hard look at themselves and start putting the experience first again.

While they’ve been busy getting their pre-rendered video to eye-blistering levels, for instance, pretty much everyone else has been ditching it in favour of using the game engine instead. Saves time, saves disc space, hardly anybody even notices the difference.

I get cross with Square because they used to make loads of games that I really liked. Now the only games they’re doing that I’m looking forward to are actually old Eidos titles.
