Rumor: Microsoft finally revamping Xbox controller’s d-pad

xboxcontroller

If this event was a library book, it’d be so long overdue that even Bill Gates would go white with sheer horror when he got a look at the late fee.

According to sources that spoke with Joystiq (fitting, we know), Microsoft’s finally decided to put some joy into its horrendously inaccurate piece of plastic. The d-pad, which is currently the sole blemish on an otherwise solid controller, will apparently raise up a quarter of an inch whenever you rotate it 90 degrees.

The new controller is being aimed at fighting game fans, primarily – in addition to being targeted at people who have hair, seeing as they’ll no longer need to pull it out while screaming in frustration all the time.

It’s set to launch sometime this holiday season, according to the unnamed, likely trenchcoat-wearing sources. We’ll get in touch with Microsoft and see if we can find out more.

I also hope ALL BUTTONS are pressure sensitive. That Xbox pad is overpriced without it.

@GENE_BC

That isn’t what this story is about, that was an attempt by Microsoft in 2008 to improve the d-pad. This story is a different one, implying it’ll be more a complete redesign for the dpad.

So they are prepping a new controller for the core fans. Even MS think Kinect will be an epic fail too huh? 3-2-1. Runnn

For Bemus huh? But the d-pad is not the only problem. The buttons are not sensitive enough. Good step though.

It’s been a long mutha fucka of a time coming.

Anything would be an improvement on that complete ass stock design.

Agree this is the blemish on an otherwise very good controller. ~How much is any redesign hampered by patents though? I thought Nintendo owned the basic cross design, Sony got round that with what looks more like 4 separate buttons, and MS have this nasty circle thing.

i love the xbox controller, ervery time i play on a dualshock it feels so ankward – can´t stand the analog sticks of the DS. don´t get me wrong – it´s all about personal taste i guess…but i´m not much into fighting games anyway and much more into shooters so the d-pad never really was an isssue for me. for shooters the 360 pad is consolewise the law imo…nevermind a better d-pad though…

Whatever, the DualShock is KING, will always be KING thats why SONY hasn’t changed it much at all. And the nextbox will have the same pad as the 360 I bet you.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense to do this before putting out a redesigned console packed in with bespoke controllers?

@11, it’d make common sense but not “we’ve got a fuck-ton of the old controllers wedged into warehouses and we really really want to get our new design out in time for the holidays” sense.

Dualshock is terrible in my opinion, unless you have baby hands that is. The Dualshock is the reason I only buy sony’s exclusives. And even while playing those I constantly jam my thumbs thumbs together b/c the analog stick placement is retarded.

I’ve never got the ‘thumb jamming’ thing. How are people holding the controller? You use the pad/tip of your thumb, not the joint.

I think I prefer the placement of dual sticks to be uniform rather than asymmetric – the d-pad is great too. The rest of the controller is arse though. Not as comfortable in my hands as a 360 controller. The sticks should be concave not convex and the triggers should be – well triggers! The sticks feel too lose for fine control too. It’s quite telling that you can get add-ons for a PS3 controller – triggers, grips and even concave stick clip-ons.

i prefer the buttons placement on the Dualshock 3, but would like it to become smoother in it’s shape, also to fix those clamps they call triggers, took 7 years but on both my dualshock 2s, the L2 & R2 have sunk into the actual controller, the dualshock 3 just clamps the fingers, but it has sank in also, sometimes pressing R2 without me going near it, so occasionally im pusing it out on the clampy part

@14 it’s obvious that you don’t use the joint of your thumb to operate the controller. I, however am a large man with large hands and for me the Dualshock altogether(not just the sticks) is horrible.
