Microsoft just announced that it’s raising the cost of an Xbox Live Gold subscription in Canada, Mexico, the US and the UK as of November 1.

Captain Common Sense said, “This will not go down well.”

Up, up, up

Nelson’s just announced the move, saying Microsoft wants to thank “loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount”: you can do so now.

Let’s see how hard Sony can beat the “we don’t charge for PSN” drum now.

So. Huh? Preparing for massive Kinect fail?

I don’t see why in the fecking hell you’d EVER raise the services price, when…

    Okay, whatever,

  3. Razor

$60 still buys you more for Live than $50 does for PSN.

    #3 5 years ago
  4. DiodeX

So does that mean that it stays at £39.99 for 12 moths in the UK?

    #4 5 years ago
  5. The Hindle

So how much is the price increasing in the UK?

    #5 5 years ago
  6. No_PUDding

@Razor, yes let’s talk about false economy.

    #6 5 years ago
  7. Patrick Garratt

@4, 5: If you pay monthly it’s going up £12 a year. It says there that other packages are unaffected, so if you pay yearly there’s no change.

Live’s main userbase is American, though. They just instantly netted themselves a bunch of money there.

So, no one likes it then, what a surprise!!

Can I just thank everyone who’s voted over the years for paying for online gaming as an additional overhead in addition to their ISP provider and endorsed a completely closed environment which also requires you to pay for access to internet based communities such as Facebook?

    Thanks all. Well done.

Now if you could just endorse paying around twenty five percent of the cost of a full new game for some new maps… oh you already have? Thanks.

    #10 5 years ago
  11. The Hindle

So no real difference then? I wonder why they raised it though.

  12. Crysis

better not come up here in Aus, we already pay up to $100… Greedy fucking M$, yes i know it’s a business, but this isn’t nessecary, Sony has proven that, not to mention online gaming has remained free on pc for countless years(excluding MMOs ofc)

    #12 5 years ago
  13. Erthazus

Well, thank yourself idiots. Let them increase the prices and thank you all for voting for this piece of shit.

“OMG, InyourFaceBook iZ AWZOM, GONNA PAY!!1″

As gaming goes far this is ridicilous and someone thinks that to pay for LIVe is better than paying for MMO’s 10-15 bucks.

Oh, thanks Steam and 2D2 for not making this piece of trash.

Anyone actually pay what ms asks for gold anyway? I think I paid 32 quid for 13 months, it’s supposed to be 40 for 12.

R they nuts? They already reached the top limit of pricing imo…wow. Feels like a punch in the stomach. Gotta puke all over my xbox…live is an awesome service. I love it. Always questioned if its really neccessary to pay for it though. Always feel like a retard when i buy a new gold. This indeed will make me think twice. Im germany based though…but only a matter of time that we ll get the same pricing.

  22. Crysis

is there any bonuses to Live that Sony doesn’t already offer for free? i think they have arcade trials, is that all? this isn’t a baiting comment, i’m legitamately curious if there’s anything extra on the service, i’m not willing to get gold til Reach comes out, in the mean time my m8 lets me use his gold acc since there’s nothing on the 360 he can’t play onn the ps3 or pc that he wants

  23. The Hindle

Who else thinks MS have done this because of Kinect?

    #23 5 years ago
  24. onlineatron

I don’t think this too big a deal anyway.

Sites like Shopto will probably still offer subscription cards/codes for discounted prices. Just shop around instead of going to MS.

    #24 5 years ago
  25. Michael O’Connor

    Mountains out of molehills.

If you were getting the 12 month cards, you were already saving yourself over $30 a year. If an extra $10 a *year* is too much for you?

It’s the first price increase for the service in EIGHT YEARS! Dear lord people…

    #25 5 years ago
  26. ShakaCarnage

Considering there’s over 24m subscribers worldwide (3m+ UK), i didn’t think they’d need to ask for more money. Especially when you consider the cash they’re raking in for Dashboard placement and almost US$ 1bn they’re making in revanue from Additional services, like Live Arcade and renetals.

If I were still a journalist, I’d be asking Crhis Lewis when he’s announcing what we’re getting for this extra money (six months after they shut live 1.0 so we could get expanded services.)

Don’t ask Matrick; I can see the response now…

VG247: So Don, you’ve just raised the price of a Live subscription by US$20, or GBP£10 per year…

Don Matrick: [Interrupts] Wooooh, yeah! [Claps at a mediocre pace] Did I say, Wooooh, yeah? Wooooooh!

Wheres the problem? The XBL Service in this countries is awesome, not compared to Germany, so it’s no problem that the “amis” and britons will pay more. Either way, buy on ebay :P

    #29 5 years ago
  30. onlineatron

    @27

That’s probably the most ignorant comment I’ve seen since joining VG247… AND THAT’S SAYING SOMETHING!

Why should people just accept hiked prices? Regardless of whether they have large disposable income or not… they should always be vigilant when spending money.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. Aimless

I think people are making this out to be a bigger deal than it is, but Microsoft didn’t do themselves any favours by announcing it in such a fashion.

Even if it’s an illusory advantage, giving the bad news of the price hike followed by, say, “and we’re improving voice chat quality” would have been a better approach. Show give and take, not just take.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Mr Tom

You think they will let me pay less if I don’t have access to all the bullshit I don’t use like Facebook, Twitter, all the bollocks “shows” they have on the Spotlight channel, Zune and so on?

    No?

i love my pc and ps3/psp and wii and ds with the great cost of online gaming between them being the staggering price of £0.00.

If theres one thing i really hate about the 360 and microsoft is making a service which is free elsewhere charge for on there platform.

I always view multiplat games as nerfed on the 360 due to this if they have online.

Hahahaha….the thought of selling my xbox is becoming even clearer as time passes.

Edit: Definitely not going to get Halo Reach now. I’m probably going to throw my elite up on craigslist this weekend with the 11 games i own and sell it for $300 all together. My live subscription isnt over until march of next year but this is just getting fucking ridiculous.

Alright, thats it. The fact that they are charging for playing a game online is just fucked up. I never use twitter, facebook
and any extra shit they are trying to release and get paid for. But those 10 extra bucks is just not okay with me. So after being a loyal xbox owner since 2007 i say FUCK U MICROSOFT. I am now supporting ps3, free multiplayer, all racing wheels are supported so is the bluetooth headset one can use to chat without paying extra to microsoft and many other functions.

  44. Hybridpsycho

@33 Wait, what? Piss on PSN because it’s not free? It’s just as free as you want it to be, it’s only if you’re a fanboy like me that you’d actually pay for the overpriced stuff called “PSN+”.

At least playing online is free on PSN, XBL forces you to buy time to play with friends. I like the 360 as well, but raising the prices is not a smart move for Microsoft. Right now I don’t think it will affect the amount of players that actually buy Gold (at least not significantly), they’ll just bend over and take it for now. But who knows what happens in the future? What if MS crosses a certain line? What then? :O

    #44 5 years ago
  45. daytripper

the way i see it as a multi console owner who probably has spent more gaming on the 360:

*couldnt give two fucks about halo reach, seriously its a sad state of affairs if a consoles first party line up has this as a majority player in the industry imo, ever heard of variety? said something similar on another forum and got slated. dont know about you guys but if i was in charge i’d make my portfolio stronger than just halo, gears, fable and forza.

*the price hike isnt a great deal but i feel the timing is shit, why didnt they do this during E3 2010 conference? with a sneak peak at what new features will be coming? nothing!

*there seems to be a change in employees at MS and a strategy i’m not taking to, far too much kinect talk and a first party line up that really is getting weak

*apart from the 360 slim sales stats i’ve read nothing else positive about MS for a while, the lack of game announcements from 1st party studios, losing exclusive games and concentrating on timed exclusive stuff is no good, it should be exclusive or not.

After Mass Effect went multiplatform i really cant see much point in owning a 360 (gears 3 maybe) and I feel they need a few big exclusive game announcements because its thin, getting weaker and the competition is gaining full speed with free online and a good blu-ray built in and exclusive titles, some very impressive ones at that.

I dont use any of the stupid bonus features like facebook and espn so why should i be charged for them. I shouldnt have to pay for online gaming either but if they are going to they should offer an online play package only deal.

From what i’ve heard MS will indeed be selling Kinect at a loss so them raising the price might be to make up for that. We can only assume seeing as they themselves dont seem to want to give a reason.

Dosnt affect me seeing as i dont live in any of those places but its important to point out that the UK and North America are where the 360 sells best (not sure about Mexico, must be where it sells best in South America then). So they’re aiming this only at places where they know its less likely to put people off the service/make the most profit.

    #57 5 years ago
  58. Callum

Well, being in the UK I don’t really mind. We are only paying extra for the pay as you go privs, which is fairly standard even on things like mobiles. But, for the USA this price hike(although not a great amount) should have come with SOMETHING to justify it?

the kinect contingency plan. Microsoft just cares about the moneyyyyy, not the consumers. lets see $10 * millions of subscibed users = $$$$$$$$$$$. WOULD microsoft ever sell a console at loss like the ps3? no. Would they offer a free service? no. do they value their customers over a long time like sony? no. doesn microsoft care about being a decent first party? noooo. what about the hardware microsoft? not till recently !!oh and u can only use microsoft parts for hard drives and most upgrades, which is why the 4gb model was launched! But i wish i can have tea with the executives at xbox, i’ll be laughing with them at how stupid consumers are.

O.G. I think PSN+ is only good for the deals if you haven’t aleardy bought the games. Getting those games at a discount rate by the end of the year will more than make up for the $50 you spent on plus cause you get to still keep those games unlike the free stuff if you ever decide to cancel your sub.

Thats what makes PSN+ a great deal. But unfortunaley the games they have for discount I already owned months or years ago so thats why I still haven’t payed for +.

Live on the other hand lets cut to the chase man YOU’RE PAYING TO PLAY YOUR $60 GAMES ONLINE. THATS THE BOTTOM LINE. BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANT TO BELIEVE IN YOUR IMAGINARY WORLD. Fuck twitter,Facebook,Rebel F.M. and whatever else you think you get on live with that sub that I get free on a PC. YOU PAY TO PLAY GAMES bottom line. and no I don’t care about your precious cross game chat on LIVE. As long as I can play BFBC2 and talk to my team mates thats all that matters. Don’t need some ass hole on the private cross chat crying about when he found out his GF was cheating on him when he walked in on her in bed.

BOO HOO XBOTS bend over santa clause aka M$ is coming to town and he’s gonna creep up to your room in the middle of night and butt rape you.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Not to late to get a PS3 and repent for your sins. The PS2 died on the cross to give us the gaming we have today. Repent and save your gamer reputation and come back to the world of PlayStation. Save yourselves :D

(of course I’m joking take it easy geez) play what you want to play I don’t care dude.

@25 People make mountains out of molehills over things like an optional install on a game. I’d say that, by comparison, people’s responses to this is pretty tame.

Whilst I’m sure many have no issue with paying for the current XBL service, I’m sure a lot of people are perfectly justified in asking what this extra cost will benefit them. As others have pointed out, the timing of this action in relation to a new Halo game and the launch of a new peripheral is notable.

@71, i agreed with you for a while on your comment, but then you became your classic self with the swearing & insults etc. could you ever possibly make a statement without degrading yourself to the maturity of a 12 year old boy with ignorant parents on a sugar high?

  76. Erthazus

I agree with TEA on everything except of

“The PS2 died on the cross to give us the gaming we have today.”

    But everything else is correct.

  77. Crysis

well honestly, to me, gaming hasn’t evolved much since the last generation, sure we have more & more online games, but that too was started last generation, also motion controls became popular last generation by the eyetoy, i don’t know if any other motion sensor perephials have had that kind of impact prior to the eyetoy though, so as far as i’m concerned, this gen is just improving on last gen.
But saying that the PS2 is the Jesus Christ of gaming is insulting to many people, personally i couldn’t care less about Jesus, the only impact he’s had on my life is the calender, but many, MANY relgious believers would take that as a huge insult. which is why it should not be used in a statement simply because it’s too contreversial & people tend to over react.

Well here I will Put it:
I use it only to Watch Netflix Movies, So I guess I will move on to my PS3 or Wii now, because they are still free to use to watch Netflix.

    Internet: $50.00 a month
    Netflix Sub: $21.00 a month
Xbox Sub: $50.00 a year, now going to $60.00 a year

So yearly just on those 3: $902.00 going to $912.00

I know I know, only $10.00 right…well When your wallet is bent to the snapping point, all it takes is $1.00 to break it….

Analysts have already said that Netflix’s current strategy is not sustainable. So They will be raising prices as well. And my Internet company, Well they raise prices about $5.00 every 6 months.

Here is the article about Netflix and their Billion dollar deal with Epix:

P.S. Crysis STFU! I’m suppose I’ll get a thread made about me on religious bashing too like the racism thing. Give it a rest I said I was joking….plus you’re going to hell when you die AHAHAHAHAHA!

@79, there was a joke in there? i thought jokes were funny, how dissapointing, anyways i said don’t say it because some ppl can’t take a ‘joke’, especially on something as controversial as religion, is it possible for you to write a comment without swearing or insults? not too hard, most normal people can do it.

Just for clarity Tea, I was throwing you a bone.

I agree 100% that the PS3 and its PSN are better values. Honestly they have been for awhile.

And PSN+ is a bit lite on its incentives, but at 60usd/year so is LIVE Gold.

All of that being said, I still feel that LIVE is a more stable and robust service. Add in so many(read: almost all) of my gaming friends play on LIVE, toss in the exlcusive Arcade games, and a few odd exlcusive retail games, and for me the comfort of the xb360 controler … and it is going to be hard to break away from xb360 personialy.

And to be honest I tried that once.

After a rrod I sold everything xb360, and started buying/playing on PS3. But because of thos same reasons listed above, I went back to xb360 once my replacment system came back from MS.

But times are tough, and like Frosty said, I may not have a choice. Things have gotten harder for me and my family in the past 12 months. They don’t look much brighter anytime soon.

And I have 3 xb360 gold account at this point(the extra systems kids xmass gifts from their grandparents). So instead of 180 usd to keep the gold live running for one more year I may break down and buy them(or have my folks buy em, for xmass their own PS3s).

Me, myself? I play so much PC these days(that is where the real gaming value is at), that I doubt I would miss Gold Live anyways.

  83. theevilaires

I knew what you mean O.G. I know you didn’t mean any disrespect in the slightest. My rant about LIVE was not directed at you but at the XBOT loyalist such as Gadzooks! and others.

But hey when you’re right you’re right. Hope things look up in the coming future for you and your family.
