Yamauchi recommends 10GB HD space for a “smooth” GT5 experience

gt5ferrari

Kazunori Yamauchi has tweeted Gran Turismo 5 will be an optional install on PS3, however, he feels to best experience the game, you’ll want 10GB of space ready and available.

To run the game, Yamauchi tweeted you’ll need just 256MB of space, but for a smooth experience, 10GB is recommended.

Here’s the tweet translated into English as best as Google Translate could do it:

If you work at least a 256M-byte, 10G can play comfortably and free bytes. The RT @ Poric4u: @ Kaz_Yamauchi GT5 How much capacity is installed? I, 40GB PS3 has a

Yamauchi didn’t clarify what he meant by “smooth” experience, but hopefully he’ll elaborate more on this sometime between now and the game’s release.

Until then, if your PS3 HD is full, you may want to clear a few things off of it.

GT5 is out November 2 in the US and November 3 in the UK and Europe.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Welcome to the PC3, where the only you way you can comfortably play half of your games is by using up significant amounts of space on your HDD.

Priceless.

What’s the point of a HDD on the console if you can’t even freely use most of it?

So if DMC4 took 20 minutes for a 5gb install…yikes…

Who doesn’t have 10GB really…upgrade or delete the bullshit that you already have on your PC hdd

@2 – unless you make no installs mandatory, or push developers to avoid it, an HDD is just too tempting not to use.

I do slightly prefer the 360 approach of making it mandatory not to use it but an option, but the downside is slower loading.

With Sony leaving it up to the developers for the most part the console has seen more installs. Plain and simple.

I’d note here you don’t have to install – i.e. you can just accept the longer loading. The install is optional and is surely aimed at reducing load times.

So in fact I think the GT5 approach is better than most on PS3.

@5 The only reason the install option even exists on the PS3 is because the read speed of the Blu-ray on the console is painfully slow. That could have been easily avoided, and it shouldn’t even be an issue.

I can’t wait to see what the load times are like.

@8 At least the DVD will load faster enough not to *require* half your games to be installed. I have a 60GB HDD on my PS3, and I’ve got nearly 40GB of *mandatory* game install data on it. That’s just ridiculous.

10 gig no problem for me i have plenty of space on my ps3 hard drive im glad ps3 uses blu ray more space sure it loads up a little slower cause theres more to read on the disk the blu ray is also much harder to scratch unlicke stupid regular dvd. You could just erase installs of other games if you are low on space games you arent playing or demos you don’t play anymore.

@9 why don;t you just get a 320 gig 2.5 laptop hard drive you can buy one for 55-60 dollars and you wouldn’t have to worry about space anymore problem solved that’s what i did.

@9, yeh it’s a little drawback, so i would save $50 for a 320gb hdd, but i’d rather longer loading times with my ps3 then an odd scratched disk with my 360, also notice that the actual laser in the ps3 is of good quality, MUCH greater than any dvd or 360 on the market, it’s loaded dvds i though i could never watch again :)

@11 It has nothing to do with there “being more to read on the disc”.

All machines are capped on how much data that can read by the speed of their processor and the amount of RAM they never, neither of which are especially high on either to PS3 or the 360.

The Blu-ray on the PS3 is slow because it’s slow, period. It is a 2x player, which is frankly embarrassing. If they hadn’t gone with such a slow player, the problem would have been eliminated completely.

If I wanted to install games, I’d used my PC.

@12 It shouldn’t be an issue in the first place. It’s called “quality.” If something doesn’t live up to what I consider a good standard of quality, it’s my place as a consumer to criticise it.

@13 @14 The point is, the consumer shouldn’t *have* to. The console should have been designed better. Think of how bad it’ll be for people who original bought the console, when the biggest hard drive was only 20GB.

I know numerous people still using their 20GB hard drive on the 360. Why? Because they’re not forced to install mandatory files just to play their games.

There are able to fill it with what they *want* to, instead of what they *have* to, which completely defeats the point.

@15, you’re forgetting blu ray players are new. Also low end dvd roms had slower read speeds then high end cd rom players at the time
[PS3 actually has a better average (not max) read speed than the 360 does for dual layered discs, which are mandatory for larger games]
You would think by now that games requiring a mandatory install were just lazy ports, but this is not always the case

Anyone who bought those original PS3s don’t care about their initial hard drive size. They are laughing at your stupid ass. They have full PS2 backwards compatability. Besides they probably upgraded already because any regular laptop HDD will work with the PS3.
Now about GT5′s 10 GB optional install I’ll do it without hesitation as I’m sure any true fan of GT will.

@16 4x speed Blu-rays were in production as early as 2005.

“You would think by now that games requiring a mandatory install were just lazy ports, but this is not always the case.”

Exactly. And when they’re not mandatory, you can bet the difference will be noticeable. If I see loading times for this game that end up hitting over the 1 minute mark, I’ll be skipping the game completely.

@17 Again, you missed the point. The consumer should not be forced into *having* to buy a new HDD simply to play their games, unless they want to install them every single time.

I don’t actually mind installs, especially not on a game like this, I’d do almost anything to play it. I’ve got plenty of space on the HD, what bugs me is the time it takes.

@18, i bought my hdd to turn my ps3 into a full pledge media plyer, backed up multiple blu rays & tonnes of dvds onto it.
& to have a faster blu ray player in the ps3 would have cost both sony & us more than the already bloated price, so i think most ps3 users would be willing to put up with the extra loading here & there, sure it’s annoying, but Sony would have lost even more than they did.

Honestly, cry me a river, Michael. It’s easy and inexpensive to buy a larger hard drive and install it. If you could afford the most expensive console on the market, you shouldn’t have an issue buying a larger HDD.

I got a 500GB HDD off of Newegg for less than $100. I support that the developers are doing everything in their power to give us a seamless and thoroughly enjoyable experience. It’s not their fault about the technology that went into the PS3.

@9 BR isn’t painfully slow next to DVD – you need to check the relative comparisons between the two.

All streamed content, whether from DVD or BR, is slower than HDD, and if the game is such that it cannot stream well or needs big chunks of data loaded quickly then HDD is better than both DVD and BR.

My point is it’s not the speed of BR that is the issue so much as HDD is actually the fasted and every PS3 has one and Sony hasn’t made it mandatory to not use it for installs.

Search and you’ll find plenty of developers admiting they love using HDD and even some wishing they could exploit it more on 360.

Plenty of 360 titles in my view have also suffered from longer than necessary load times due to having to load from DVD vs the HDD and it’s no surprise that most 360 owners I know always install to get faster load times.

The bottom line is HDD is the best option vs DVD and BR and on PS3 developers are allowed to use it whereas on 360 they aren’t to the same extent.

@26, they do make blu ray drives for pc & they are quite popular, but right now there is not enough reasons to justify supporting blu ray content for pc.
So as i said earlier, a Blu Ray does make a DVD look like a CD. They all do virtually the same things, store data, the main difference is the storage capacity, which blu ray will become the new medium, CD is for music but it can play video, DVD is for video & Blu Ray is for HD video, the PS3 was designed & intended as a home entertainment system, & to many, that’s exactly what it is.
But in the end, they’re all just portable options waiting to be mashed onto a hdd, but for now, they need to focus on how they can do that & counter piracy at the same time, Maybe a three time install limit? install it on up to 3 different harddrives, usable on any account name(but only one playing the game online at once), sounds good to me, some pc games do this right now & i think something like that would be great for consoles, but the most efficieant way is through downloads & for some reason, both XBL & PSN are lagging very far behind, i would have expected same day launch for download & retail or at the very least, same week downloads by now…
Also @ itsucks, everytime you troll, i’ll call you baby from now on, sounds quite fitting for you, that alright baby?

I dont really see what the fuss is about, to play Forza properly you needed to install at least 4 gig for disc 2.

They are big games with a large selection of tracks and cars which tend to get switched frequently.

You could argue the bluray vs. DVD issue but both solutions have compromises and both solutions work just fine.

Once again O’Connor you just make yourself look like a damn fool. Please just STFU or go troll on your own site. It an optional install.

Forza 3 was an optional install but I’m sure many gamers installed it anyway so their 360′s wouldn’t red ring from over heating. UC2,KZ2,GOW3,and KZ3 all look and play better than any 360 game but have no install period. It is possible as we know, but devs are just lazy to optimize their games for CELL.

Like I said before you will be installing Halo Reach even though its optional (STFU yes you will) but KZ3 will still be bigger and better and still not have an install option. Stop putting your damn foot in your mouth. You just can’t wait for something (in your head) negative to be posted about the PS3 so you can run around like its 2006 again.
