Xbox 360 will continue to be offered into 2015, says Lewis

Microsoft Europe’s VP of interactive business, Chris Lewis, has told BusinessWeek that the company will continue to offer Xbox 360 for another five years.

Speaking at gamescom last week, Lewis’s comment confirms the console will have a ten-year life-cycle – the console launched in 2005 – alongside Sony’s much reported intention to continue with a ten-year life-cycle for PS3.

Another five years of longevity is all down to Kinect, according to Lewis.

“Kinect really gives us, I think, a very genuine additional five years,” he said in Cologne.

“What Kinect does is broaden us out to users that we weren’t addressing in the past.”

When asked if Microsoft would release a new console while 360 was still on sale, Lewis said “we’re not fixated on that right now.”

Sony’s already admitted it’s working on new hardware, while Nintendo president Satoru Iwata’s said his company is “studying and developing the next console to Wii”.

It looks like the next year is going to be quite casual for MS by the looks of its schedule.

Only core game from MS studios is Reach & Fable III, what’s after that?

Something, hopefully. Or I’ll be quite cross.

if ms go casual that would be dissapointing, but honestly i couldn’t care too much as the console is nerfed imo when you have to pay to play online.

I’m ok with that. I use my PC for multiplatform AAA games, 360 can serve me as Halo and Live Arcade box, at least that way I don’t need to invest in a new platform in near future.

Well, they’ve still got Gears 3 next year and whatever multiplatfrom stuff is coming.

I’m sure there’ll be plenty of games. But Microsoft needs to offer some of its own internally-developed stuff to the non-casuals too. Sony are really showing them up on this front.

“Offered”?

Why, I’ll take 3 thankyouverymuch!

Realistically the longer they can string out this gen the better in terms of finances. The hardware is making profit and there are probably a great deal of xbox 360′s to be sold as older models run out their 3 year warranties and finally give up the ghost.

@6 The problem is Microsoft don’t have that many internal studios, and those they do seem focussed on Kinect. Turn 10 will bring out a new Forza, Lionhead probably have something going on and you’ll see a new Halo product from 343, but that’s about it.

The main reason Sony are showing them up is simply because they have far more studios. The PS3′s ho-hum launch has lead to a real focus on first- and second-party software, an approach that’s really starting to pay off.

Indeed. Microsoft really shot themselves in the foot by shutting down/shrugging off all those internal studios.

Probably not Blerk. Had they not shut them down they’d have kept haemorrhaging money from the division and I’d wager that the 360 would have been the last console Microsoft ever produced.

It’s not great for us, but it’s good for them.

They don’t seem to have replaced them with anything, though. When they originally did it I surmised they’d be contracting stuff out instead, but that seems not to have happened.

I really doubt they’re going to. Their plan for the rest of this gen is profitability, and profitability alone… and they know they can do that with just the revenue from the hardware / accessories and third party licensing stream.

There is still this partners program remember, but saying that most 3rd party studios wont do an exclusive this generation now. I think Gears 3 will be the 360s Halo 2 you know the last exclusive before the next gen is started.

Edit Well there is Ruffian games and Remedy, they are probably making new games so who knows.

I am big Xbox 360 fan, my favorite console of all three now. But the fact remains that next year is looking kinda strange for Xbox 360 exclusive games. Apart from Gears 3, what’s more?

Time to get a PS3 Blerk :D Just to let you know if Garratt has one of those insane 20,000 post comment competitions again for a PS3 your chances are higher than anyone else for winning because if I happen to win I’m sending it your way.

I sold my 360. I found MS’s exclusives (Halo, Gears, Forza, etc,) to be mediocre nonsense. MS’s IP just don’t do it for me.

The PS3 isn’t any better as the only decent exclusive on the system is the Uncharted games. The likes of Infamous, Resistance, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, MAG, etc, were very average. I sold the system just recently.

I personally found the Wii to be the best console (exclusives wise) and it’s a system i’ll be keeping.

Also, if a title is multiplatform it’ll be bought on PC.

From a personal point, the PS3/360 hardly set my world alight.

Bless. I can almost guarantee that I wouldn’t sell it and spend the cash on cheap women, too! Almost.
