PS Jailbreak developer wants people to buy “original solution”

Oh the irony. PS3Jailbreak’s creator have admitted its USB software solution for hacking PS3 has already been cloned, and is urging people to buy the original for “warranty and support.”
The new USB device allows you to copy Blu-Ray discs to your hard drive and play home-brew games straight from your PS3.
PS3jailbreak has used its website to say, “Beware of imitators and Chinese knock-offs, PS Jailbreak is the original solution,” after reports the device has already been cloned.
It’s also asking people to only buy from “authorised dealers.”
Sony has yet to respond to the release of this latest attempt to hack the PS3, but we would always urge you to buy the original game and help support the industry against piracy.
Thanks, MaxConsole.

Digital Foundry (on Eurogamer) has a very interesting article on the implications and “future” of this hack … worth reading: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-psjailbreak-article

And I would like the creators of PSJailbreak to be assasinated by Sonys Hitmen, but I guess we’ll both be dissapointed. There is absolutley no excuse for piracy, and the people who use such methods should be tracked down via PSN and have their IP adresses blocked. Simple as.

ROTFL!
If piracy was one of the factors of ps1 and ps2 succes then ps3 will conquer the world! Lol!

When I was 12 yrs old and had no money, i copied PSX games.
I did this till I was 16. After this I got my first job and started to buy the games. Of course, money is not an excuse too.
I was glad that MS had some possibilities to ban hacked/modded consoles over XBL. And as PS3 owner, I hope that Sony fix this shit soon.
PS3Jailbreak’s creator is an idiot.
Its like:”Please rape only blondes, not brunettes”

Oh teh ironing.
What does he think, that pirates are willing to pay for quality and support when they’re too cheap to buy original games. Fuck him, and fuck the bottom feeders who use this device to rip off the devs.

Was going to happen eventually I guess. Now it’ll be a constant battle between the pirates and Sony via firmware updates. :/

i would like to use something like this simply to store my shit onto the ps3 so i don’t need to find the disks, but the fact is other people will borrow games & simply copy them onto the harddrive then return the game, maybe next gen the ps4 will offer an full install option, but renders the disk useless unless you install it back onto the disk, that way it can only be in one place at a time

It’s still a smoke and mirrors. Basically from what i read Sony can rewrite PS3′s BIOS system and remove features.
It’s still not cracked yet, it’s just uses a software from Sony that helps them to Rip apart hardware and make it look like a Developers kit device. End of story.

@Crysis
It’s more likely that discs will be encoded and registered to accounts that need to be online at all times. It seems like the next step as we get closer to completely digital. Some people have been talking about it for a while, there was an article in develop about it a few months back.

People who buy/sell/trade copied games have little or no respect for the industry. True gamers would pay for the hard work of the devs.

@11, what if it’s shit & you want to get rid of it, or you don’t have much money & want a newer game? hell, i preordered Halo: Reach by trading in Red Dead Redmption & only have $50 (AUD) to pay off, down from $110(AUD), nothing wrong with trading in older games for new games since it’s likely the old games are no longer being produced & it still clears stock of the new games forcing retailers to order more, the only way this effects the industry is if it’s new game (still in production), being traded/sold then purchased as preowned since that causes the retailers to order less when they’re low on stock, so there’s nothing wrong buying a preowned game made 2+ years ago

@Crysis, I believe the argument for that was that reduced piracy would increase sales and prices would be reduced so people could still buy games without having to trade-in. I can’t see that being the case though.

Although saying that I have a copy of CS4 so maybe I’m being hypocritical. Is it the same? Dunno. I guess Adobe still make a stack of cash even with all the piracy. Game devs aren’t really the same.

Its just been a few days since they announced this. Probably build a considerable stock because they are the first and they think they can capitalized on the novelty. Its cloned now but pretty soon someone will make an installer that turns any flashdrive into a PSjailbreak before they themsevles can start selling. By the next week PSjailbreak will be bankrupt because they never even sold their first batch of $170 keychains. And then when the dust is settled the original developers will be remembered for shooting themselves in the foot for thinking pirates would ever pay for anything.

I know what you guys are saying about posting stories like this, I don’t really like talking about pirates and would prefer not to publicise it, on the other hand if we didn’t things like this may take longer to get to sony’s attention, oh and its quite an ironic story really.

@28 You’re not supposed to like talking about pirates, but it’s still very much a part of the scene you’re covering.
If reporters were to stay away from things they don’t like, then they shouldn’t report murders, rapes or massive flooding either.
It just doesn’t work like that. You don’t make the news, you just report them.
And yeah, it is pretty damn funny. The difference is he put a lot of time and hard work into making his hack, unlike the people who make conso… Oh, wait.

If I do want to support somebody, that is Sony and their great game studios. I have no problem with buying games ATM even if I am a poor student. So I will buy one of the clone sticks just out of curiosity and laugh at your overpriced attempt
I agree you did a good job bringing us an actual modchip for PS3 that is extremely easy to install.

Could the PS3 be in serious trouble with this then? I mean games like GT 5 and UC cost upwards of 20 to 60m to make and if those games get pirated Sony will not make a penny of that back so yea id say they are.

Well i know Sony already can ban consoles from connecting to PSN. Not sure on what options they have to monitor stuff though. Maybe they’ll be able to detect consoles running this thing like MS can detect flashed drive ones.

@35: Funnily enough, they just did this to one of the people testing the “hack”. 30 days, and I’m guessing that’s just to prove a point. (It’s funny actually, if you play a game using this thing then your current game shows as “Backup Manager”… which is a little easy to detect.
)
For the time being I’m betting no-one else goes online with one.

The thing that can save Sony is to make a firmware update that will detect this shit and lock it or any other future games. Next they need to be sure that the new SKU’s will puke this dongle like it is some alien inside USB drive.
So basically if this is going to happen, than only old games are worth playing with this dongle. I’m not sure that it is worth it, especially when you will have troubles if you are going online and not playing future games with it.
Sony is pretty stealthy after these news, so they are preparing their own nuclear weapon.

I’ve got the impression alot of people thought that Sony couldnt already ban consoles, Microsoft style. They probably thought that all they could do was ban an account which, being free to make wasnt a big deal.

Finally, the ps3 jailbreak comes real. People who support Sony will still use the original disc. Some people like me want to enjoy the convenience and the flexibility of the new stuff, will try it. I ain’t worry Sony will block those users. I think there will be new fireware to fix the problem.
I got an email from an online store. They have this thing. I’m considering to order. http://www.gadget-asia.com/en/home/world-s-first-ps3-modchip-ps-jailbreak-plug-and-play.html
