Gran Turismo 5 upsets Siena

Sunday, 22 August 2010 14:53 GMT By Joe Anderson

karting

The Consortium for the Protection of the Palio has warned Sony its unhappy about the use of its new karting track in Gran Turismo 5, which is based around the Piazza del Campo.

Piazza del Campo is a historic public space in Tuscany, Italy, which is used to host the Palio di Siena, a horse race held twice each year on July 2 and August 16 in which ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours, represent ten of the seventeen or city wards.

As you can see in the video below, the track and flags are represents in high detail.

Anna Carli, CEO of the Consortium for the Protection of the Palio, suggested there will be a diplomatic request to SCEI to resolve the situation, possibly by removing the offending items.

She also adds if this move does not suffice, they may ask lawyers to seize the release of Gran Turismo 5 until such time it is.

“You can not use images of Contrade, in this case the flags, without authorization. Given the relevance of the game with no history and references to our party, in particular with the use of images of flags of the contrade, we would not authorize use.”

Hopefully this will all blow over and Gran Turimso 5 will still be released on time, we’d hate to see another delay.

Gran Turismo 5 is due to release on November 2 in the US and November 3 in the UK.

Thanks, Corriere.it.

    That’s all because the Consorzio is composed of dumb people who don’t know shit about videogames and the Corriere doesn’t have anymore silly news to publish, so they throw any shitty news on the paper.

    The thing that pops out to me about that video is that the player was fighting the controls.

    Typical GT. Thats why I don’t flip for GT(or Forza, for that matter). I raced Karts, they don’t behave like that. Not even close. They drive smooth as glass and control like a dream.

    That video was a joke.

    If Karts are that bad I can not imagine how hard a Nascar will control.

    Plus those AI were driving their lines. They didn’t react to the player. They didn’t adjust. Infact they look like they will ram into you instead. With little or no ramifications from the physics engine the way a player will have if the player tried the same type of driving.

    And I get it, Karts don’t drive like Mario Kart either.

    I raced 14 years in a Kart, sort of a little league for racing. Our top classes could be clocked tipping 100mph. And again handled smooth as glass.

    That video was a huge warning sign to me, and is a prime example of why I din’t enjoy very many racers today. Instead of putting forcus into on track racing, the focus of the gameplay is on hard to control physics engines.

    Not much fun, imo.

    So basically you’re basing your opinion on an entire game based on some guy’s driving “skills” (lack thereof) on pre-demo footage? You haven’t even tried the game out or played it. Seriously, either you’re an elaborate troll or you really are one messed up geezer. Go back to 1983, no one gives a shit.

    Also, pretty sure this is a minor organization that’s just looking to get some publicity. This will have no effect whatsoever on the game.

    Allen overtook Keon at about 1 minute. It’s something I’ve been checking recent vids for as it’s a problem GT (and plenty of other racers) has had in the past. In other clips there are placing changes where the action is well away from the player too.

    GT is a touchy subject.

    I can’t think of too many other games(there are a couple) that gamers identify Sony/PS with as GT. So, when ever someone brings up a point or opinion about the game those of us who are dedicated to Sony tend to go off like a bad firecracker.

    Thnx for the back up Michael. I should have known better then to post about GT5. It is just the way it is.

    I really want to like this game. I used to play the crap out of the first one years ago. And with all of the stuff packed in the game, I really wanna love it.

    But my excitment falters each time I see video or read about peoples reactions after they get some hands on.

    Now the nasty stuff:

    “only metamorphic insulted him, right? And his first sentence was actually quite a valid argument”
    -said Gek

    Nope, not really. After I posted 3 out of the next 4 posts were what I would call knee jerk reactions to what the posters precieved as attacks on a storied franchise.

    As far as the valid point, it isn’t.

    You can’t simply assume that I based my entire opinion of GT5 on the simple video in this thread.

    Like Tea said, I am a gamer. This is a big game, and I have done my homework. I have done a bit of reading on it and watched a lot more then just the 2:39 of video above.

    Lastly I was stating my opinion. That is kind of a no fault type thing. Agree with someones opinion or not, the opinion itself can’t not be wrong. Its just an opinion.

    I even gave some reasons I have for thinking this way.

    When I saw the video I saw exactly what I said, a player that was having trouble controling the Kart. And AI controled Karts that didn’t seem to react to the player, instead driving on predetermined lines.

    Those two things alone should indeed be warning signs for perspective buyers. At least I think they should.

    If you watch other video of this game, you will find the exact same thing happening. I saw one of a Nascar race, 8 cars, the player was all over the place, and when he pulled up along side of a car, that car dove into the corner as if the player wasn’t even there. The result was the player going off of the track, and the ai car kept going as if nothing happened.

    In the end I am hoping for a good demo(prologe isn’t really that), so I can see if the game will be accesible enough for me to enjoy it.

    #23 5 years ago
  24. DrDamn

    @24
    I watched the video and gave what is quite clearly an opinion, how is it knee jerk? It disagrees with you on one of your points is all. I agree the AI wasn’t great and followed too much of a set course. Don’t think you can make any judgements on handling based on watching a vid of someone else you dont know playing though.

    #24 5 years ago
  25. DrDamn

    This is the official Karting vid … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHx-eDMEz2Q … short but shows a lot more karts on the same track and also a crash which chucks the kart in the air a bit.

    There are other kart vids on Youtube too. One shows someone crashing out and parking in the middle of the track deliberately to cause problems and looking back, one of the AI drivers gets caught but the others make obvious moves to avoid them. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but you do seem to be putting a lot of conclusions on a single video without looking at more.

    The other point I would make about Kart controls is that whilst I agree they do control incredibly well in real life, that still takes some getting used to on a pad when you are maybe more used to the controls for regular cars.

    #25 5 years ago
  26. Michael O’Connor

    @16 Looks like O.G. appreciates the back-up after all. Your stupidity rears its head, as always.

    Anyway, yes, the karting looks really horrible. They don’t move like real karts in the slightest… which I could have sworn was the whole point of Gran Turismo.

    I’m looking forward to the karting, in GT5. I’m not so bothered whether the flags around a karting track are real, or not, though. :)

  28. Gadzooks!

    I think the problem here is that the Gran Turismo series doesnt occupy the same space as it used to, but people have a hard time letting go of what it was.

    GT used to be the closest thing to simulation on a console and that isnt the case anymore. The base level of what can be called a simulation racer has been raised considerably, and that space is occupied by a number of other racers now.

    Modern GT is fun and pretty, equal parts car porn, pokecar and nostalgia. Anyone expecting a ‘serious’ racer is going to be dissapointed, but there are plenty of accomplished sim racers out there now, and very few pure car porn games.

    GT is still relevant, but the defiinition of what ‘driving simulators’ and ‘racing simulators’ are has diverged considerably.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. DrDamn

    @27
    I could have sworn the whole point of GT was the cars :). Karting is just a nice addition if it’s fun to play. What is it about the movement which you don’t think looks right? It seems suitably point and drive. The problems the person has in that vid are directly connected to how they are using the controls. When they use the steering, accelerator and brake as analog controls rather than on/off switches they do a lot better, but for the most part it is accelerator or brake on full with no real middle ground – similarly for the steering too many little stabs at turning and no fluidity or subtlety to how they control it.

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Gadzooks!

    @30

    There is a difference between attempting to mimic real handling and making cars difficult to control to add a bit of challenge to races.

    The timetrial demo exhibited ‘difficult’ control when in simulation mode, but not ‘realistic’. Cars do not handle anything like that in real life.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. DrDamn

    @31
    What’s the Timetrial demo got to do with it? I’m talking about this Karting vid and conclusions people are drawing based on watching someone else play badly. You can see exactly what I’m talking about by watching the video – watch the wheel movement and the acceleration/brake indicators.

    What you found with the time trial demo may well still hold true, but this specific karting video has little to do with that considering how the player is trying to play.

    Mr, Invisible tiger 3D Gadzooks already played Gran Turismo 5, can i have your copy of the game? Fucking fanboy.

    Game is absolutely fantastic and it was nominated as the best of show in Gamescom, not to mention that i tried it at the last GC day and the game was brilliant in everything and i never saw so much options in Racing Sim, even RFactor sucks compared to GT5.

    + there will be A-spec and B-spec. Especially B-spec thingy like an RPG Simulation game where you need to see strength and abilities of your driver so you can race, this is really outstanding. B-Spec will be absolutely Gold in NASCAR or WRC. (Didn’t saw that yet, but sound awesome)

    Impressed with lightning and trees shadows.
    There are a lot of content. I can’t imagine how much will be in the final game.

    Tend to agree with most of that. I think GT5 will have improved in a couple of areas over what we have played already and previous version of the game – AI and handling. I doubt on evidence so far it will be as good as some which are out there.

    It does still hold a couple of high points though. Car porn being the obvious, but breadth and variety of what they are offering is huge even if some of it doesn’t work so well – Nascar, WRC, Karting, B-Spec, Track “editor”. I think it still has the best fantasy tracks too.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. Gadzooks!

    @32

    “What’s the Timetrial demo got to do with it?”

    Well that’s pretty obvious – It showed the new handling model. This discussion is about handling.

    “I’m talking about this Karting vid and conclusions people are drawing based on watching someone else play badly.”

    If a person plays badly the game should still react realistically, if your game is trying to be a ‘sim’. I’ve spent enough time on track to know that the handling in the timetrial and in the video, even given the players wild steering, is not realistic.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. DrDamn

    @33
    That vid is great, but it is a perfect example of what GT5 is going to do best – Car porn. There was an F1 type car in there too – which is nice, didn’t realise they were included too. That’s a good example of what Karting represents here. Older GT games had F1 cars too. Was it as good as a dedicated F1 sim? No it wasn’t. Was it a fun addition to the game and enjoyable to try? Hell yeah.

    #35 5 years ago
  36. DrDamn

    @35
    Specifically on the Karting it’s realistic enough for a game bonus. As above with the F1 cars and the WRC additions. It’s not going to be as good as a dedicated title in those areas. It’s more about whether it’s good enough/enjoyable for what is essentially a bonus mode.

    I don’t see anything obviously wrong with the kart handling. The difficultly the player is having with the controls is significantly down to how they are playing, plenty of other vids out there with people who don’t have issues.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. Michael O’Connor

    @30 At O.G. rightfully pointed out, Karts simply do not move like that. They are a lot more springy and much easier to turn than what is displayed in any of those videos.

    This just looks like they took the car mechanics and dumped them on the karts. It’s lazy, and Gran Turismo isn’t usually known for its laziness.

    And before anyone starts spouting crap (inevitable on this site, and proven entirely by people’s response to O.G.’s original post) I respect and appreciate the franchise for its quality and depth even though I’m not a fan.

    #37 5 years ago
  38. Gadzooks!

    @37

    I’m not going to argue with you about what is realistic or not. I’ve spent enough time on track to know how cars handle.

    As I originally said, it doesnt matter that the handling is not realistic, as GT is no longer that kind of game. It’s fun to play and that’s all it needs to be.

    #38 5 years ago
  39. DrDamn

    “much easier to turn”

    I think that’s part of the problem – it is different and the player has approached it like he drives in normal car games. They over correct a lot because turning in the opposite direction is much more effective than they expect. Other vids show people adapting much more quickly to the karts and driving much more effectively as a result.

    @37 You’ll have to point out to me where the mission statement for this franchise went from realistic simulation to “oh, it’s not very realistic but fun to play.”

    People seem to be claiming that the franchise’s approach has change without any actual context to judge that assumption from. If you can link me to when that suddenly changed, I’ll conceed my point.

    In the past games, they were able to authentically recreate stuff like rally driving. They were able to make it feel different from the on-road races.

    What’s the point in emulating different types of racing if the authentic mechanics aren’t even there? Last time I checked, Gran Turismo *was* still being promoted as a hardcore sim.

    Lets wait till we have the full game out, see what the reviews have to say. Wait till you have the controller in your hands and are actually playing the karting section and then make a judgement. GT is a sim but nothing will ever beat the real thing obviously.

    @41
    It’s not the mission statement for the franchise it’s just elements of the franchise which take this approach. F1 cars were included before they were very much in the “not very realistic but fun to play.” mould. It’s looking similar here. This is not a major focus of the game – it’s a fun addition. If they don’t quite get it right then whoopdedoo, is it still fun to play?

    More important is handling of the cars – and like Gadzooks! I think GT will still have some issues there compared to the competition.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Gadzooks!

    @41

    I dont recall seeing a mission statement, let alone it changing.

    My point was that GT hasnt changed over the years, but as hardcore racing sims have been released, the boundaries between sim/carporn/arcade have moved and GT no longer sits in the sim category.

    I reckon the majority of GT players are not looking for hardcore simulation anyway. It’s success was built on easy, fun playability as well as the collectathon side of the game.

    A couple more vids from the original source …

    http://www.gamersyde.com/news_gc_more_gt5_karting-9832_en.html

    Realism arguments aside this player is clearly not fighting the controls, they get to grips with it quite easily. One comment I would make is that they are clearly quicker than the rest of the field and leads for a good few laps but a crash towards the end and he is immediately taken by the second placed kart – who he should have been well clear of. Rubber banding nastiness. Usually turn-offable in GT though isn’t it? We also don’t know what mode the game is being played under. I’ve seen a separate vid where this track was clearly under Arcade Mode and the car options were Kart, classic Fiat 500 and new Fiat 500.

    Having stupid posting issues …

    http://www.gamersyde.com/news_gc_one_lap_at_le_mans-9836_en.html

    Lap of Le Mans – notable purely because of the amount of action between the AI controlled cars. Longer course, proper start, lots of corners equals lots of changes in the order. Which is certainly a welcome departure for GT. Down one of the straights one AI controlled car clearly uses the slipstream of another to overtake too.

    Final bit honest …

    Also do my ears deceive me or are they managing to get round corners without the constant, annoying and unrealistic screech of tyres?
