PlayStation Move wins best hardware at gamescom

It seems Sony has struck the first blow in the war of motion control as Playstation Move was named best hardware at this year’s gamescom.
The jury, consisted of renowned experts in the publishing and media sector, decided PlayStation Move was the best hardware on show.
Elsewhere, Gran Turismo 5 walked away with two awards, one for best game at show and also an award for best console game.
Best handheld game went to Super Scribblenaughts.
There are six awards altogether and the full “best of” winners list is below:
- Gran Turismo 5 – Best of gamescom
- PlayStation Move – Hardware accessories
- Gran Turismo 5 – Console games
- Super Scribblenauts – Mobile games
- Guild Wars 2 – Online games
- Crysis 2 – PC games

I’ve heard good things about Tumble.

I quite like the look of Tumble – it looks like a puzzle style Boom Blox and a great fit for Move (and 3D for that matter).

I can’t say I like the look of Tumble, but that Sorcery game looks interesting, and I wouldn’t mind a blast with a move supporting Demon’s Souls 2.

Can’t wait for MOVE. I’ll be there day 1 first thing in the morning at the store to get the whole package deal. Can’t wait until someone hacks the PS3 so I can play back up Wii games with MOVE

Bet they’re glad Nintendo didn’t turn up.
Tumble looks kind of interesting but we’re much more “knock ‘em down” than “build ‘em up” in our house.

Is Tumble a PSN game?
I like the look of it but it’s not something i’d pay £30-40 for.
Also, Sorcery does look incredibly interesting. If the developers can create an interesting story and flesh out level design and game mechanics… Then I’d buy it.

@6 There is a demolition mode too. Hopefully there is good competitive multiplayer support too as that is what works best in Boom Blox.
@7 Yes it’s PSN.

The real deal if Puzzle Quest 3 could be done with the tumble thingy, than thats cool. There is potential.

That’s a good win. Although Kinect’s offerings did seem very poor, so not much competition really.

How do you charge the Move wands up with out forking out for a ‘charge station’, do they come with a USB wire?
#13

20/08/10, 3:23 pm
@12 It can charged using the same USB wire that other PS3 devices use. The ones you have will work fine.
Just like Kinect, I will be buying this on day one. Although the game I’m most interested in using it to play… LittleBigPlanet 2… isn’t due out for a while after.
The game’s announced *solely* for use with the Move haven’t particularly impressed me, but I’m more interested in how this can be implemented into already established genres anyway. That’s where its greatest potential lies.
I’ll only need to buy the wand and “nunchuck” thankfully, as I already own the camera.

Will probably get the starter pack as Its cheap and gives you a few demos.
I am interested in the Tiger Woods review as I reckon it could really be good with that.

There seems to be some cracking PSN Move games launching day one, such as Flight Control which is sounding awesome.
Ruse also looks interesting, will defo pick that up.

@7 yes it is a PSN game but even if it wasn’t all PS move games retail at £25 rather than £40 this is only games like sports champions and the fight which are only PS move, games like heavy rain will still be full retail price!

Third year in a row that SCE have won best game at Gamescom (after LBP and Uncharted 2). Pretty good going really.
Sony must be gutted that all the good stuff this week has been overshadowed by you-know-what.

All the demos from the starter disc are due to appear on PSN anyway. So if you can get hold of a camera cheaply then the lone wand may be a better option.

This is the first I’ve heard of Tumble, and the first thing that gives me any interest at all in Move.
I basically owned a Wii purely for Wii sports and Boom Blox multiplayer, and I still rate Boom Blox as one of the best games ever made… even though I dont own a Wii any more.

I think it may be a bit limited in multiplayer – especially as it’s a PSN title so no where near the scope of Boom Blox. The demolition stuff looks interesting from a high score perspective though.

If you’ve not got a camera yet then the package is probably still be the best bet, but some have picked up the camera cheap with Eye of Judgement or Eye Pet for example. Just didn’t want you thinking you had to buy it to get the demos … http://www.vg247.com/2010/08/19/ps-move-demos-coming-to-psn/

I agree with the guy who said Sorcery looks amazing. Its one of the only things I’ve seen from Move and Kinect that looks worth while.
I wonder if that Harry Potter game we saw with Kinect the other day will get Move support as well. To me, Move seemed perfect for that game. After all, it features a wand!

The Gamescom Sorcery vid was a bit cringeworthy with a boy stood there doing all the moves. The Harry Potter Kinect stuff sounded a bit limited – or did I misread it. Only certain on-rails sections?

@29 I don’t know. I’m pretty sure it has to be a full on HP game as its out on all Platforms, but I think im right in saying the Xbox version gets a special Kinect mode, which is on rails.

@31 Exactly. That sub controller would of given you full on movement. Perhaps if it does get Move support, the full game will be playable with the device as well as Dualshock. That would be pretty interesting.

20/08/10, 6:52 pm
Of course there is no need for the HP game to be on rails, it’s just lazyness or a lack of imagination on the developers part.
Movement and look can be done with a standard controller and you just use handwaving or even voice command for spells.

im realy keen to get move.
there are actualy a few games looking very promising. that sourcery thing looks quite good and tiger woods or that other realitic golf game announced is a no brainer for me. I do love golf in games as well as in RL, although im not playing it in reality.
tumble and other smaller games seem to be good fun and Killzone 3 and LBP2 are also no brainers for me.
And dont forget using it in GT5 for teh interface. My 2nd Heavy Rain playtghrough is also waiting but guess what:
I wount fucking buy RE5 again u tossers @ capcom. suffocate at it!

@33 Totally defeats the purpose of Kinect. Its controller free gaming; If you’re using the controller to mask a limitation, why not just use the controller exclusively? Even worse, you have to mentally adjust for two different types of lag, adding even more complication to a HP game that needs to appeal to all age groups and skill levels.
I think these developers have thought this through a little bit longer and harder that you have.
Also, lazy developers. ^.^b

@Michael O
Are you getting Kinect for personal use, or is this more to do with the Gaming Vault??? Are you using your Own money, as in out of your own personal pocket, to get Kinect? If so why?? Just curious…not being negative…
Also if you could only Buy One product this year would it Be Sony’s Move?? or Microsoft’s Kinect??? And what are the reasons for buying one and not the other??? in this hypothetical situation…that is.
THANK YOU

@44 I can’t answer that for NDA reasons, but all I’ll say is that I want the Kinect regardless.
If I had to choose? I can afford both, but if it was a toss-up I would go with the Kinect first.
The Move is a great piece of technology, and it has a lot of breath to support both traditional gaming and new ideas for a long time to come, but it’s essentially a Wiimote (albeit a better Wiimote) and I already have a Wii.
The Kinect is a more inventive idea, but I won’t deny it has less potential for expansion outside of the ideas we’ve already seen. I’d rather try out something new (Kinect) before I try out something I’m already familiar with (Move) though.
That’s a hypothetical situation though, like you said, and in reality I’ll have my hands on a Move the day it’s released, and enjoying it immensely. Which is before Kinect launches anyway.
I wouldn’t rate one over the other though. I have no doubt that they’ll *both* bring amazing games and ideas to the table.

“Totally defeats the purpose of Kinect. Its controller free gaming”
Rubbish. Controller-free gaming is PR to reel in non-gamers. Kinect can, and will, work with a regular controller and that is where it’s true potential lies – as control enhancement, not a replacement controller.
“Even worse, you have to mentally adjust for two different types of lag”
The GAME would be tuned to adjust to the small lag difference.
