Rumor: Far Cry 3 in development

farcry2a2

According to the latest issue of PC Gamer, Far Cry 3 is in full production.

Per the print mag’s Spy column, the game is “in full swing now” at Ubisoft Montreal.

This rumor section of the magazine states the game’s development is being lead by Josh Mosqueira, who was the lead designer for Company of Heroes at Relic Entertainment.

Nothing more is known at this point, but it has been suggested the game will stay set in Africa.

We’ll shoot a mail off to Ubisoft on this.

Thanks, BigDownload.

@2 Totally agree. It wasn’t even a game, it was just a random sequence of endless checkpoint shootouts.

FarCry 1 was fantastic back in the day.

FarCry 2 I thought was terrible. Crysis felt more like FarCry2.

I’m actually playing through FC2 right now (rental) aaaaand…. Oh My Fucking God it’s a SLOG.

The number of checkpoints and the way they respawn makes every journey a boring ass slog, the side missions are soooooo repetitive. Enemy patrol vehicles make practically no noise until they’re ramming up your arse (how they manage this in a supposedly identical vehicle going at identical speeds I still don’t know).

It’s basically pish.

Another vote for FC1 over FC2 here, not that I thought FC2 was that bad, but FC1 was a bit of a landmark game in my books.

Edit: FC1 = PC version, FC:Instincts and FC:Predator just didnt click for me, although the map edior was awesome.

now ill start by saying here i see pure nobs that cry abut everything
1 i thing fc2 is more good then fc1 and more realistic cos face it a man with super power playing with m60? gtfo and go play some spider man or something
fc2 have more unique sortie and to not making that boring if you are smart then take the buss yes 10 minutes you will spend going from point a to b the buss do it for 1 sec that’s how i got though the game and clean it in like 3 days or something

The best thing about FC2 is the map editor, but the multiplayer itself is broken so yoy can’t really enjoy your creation.

Far Cry 1 was absolute shite. Far Cry 2 wasn’t a really better game. But it had one hell of a world. Africa was a fantastic Setting. I’d like to see it set in Africa again, but with an interesting storyline, a better maingoal. Keep the Sandbox Gameplay in approaching a mission. Better weapon handling. No more wasting two clips on an enemy. More to do when you’re not doing missions, like treasure hunting, hunting and looting. Just like Red Dead Redemption.

Please no Antarctic. That would be interesting, but not with Far Cry.

Far Cry 2 had the mechanics of an awesome game and the AI of a shit game.

Someone in UBI sabotaged Far Cry 2, they removed all the pauses for breath from the voice acting, they took out anything RPGish from the game and they set every AI in the game to raving loon that will drop whatever they’re doing to charge you as soon as they see you.

I truly cannot fathom the choices made in that games development.

yeah cause ten second sprints with blurry screen and weapons that explode in your hands are so fucking awesome… and i just love boring missions that make you go to the other side of the map for no apparent reason and the story was just brilliant yo. rpgish? you do know its a fucking shooter right?

worse still the decision to allow only 6 vehicles in the map editor is devastating when you consider theres 16 players and massive space that people filled with nothing.

the split ranked/unranked modes were atrocious. not allowing created maps in ranked modes was ridiculous. back to those brilliant mechanics you talk about, why cant you pick up enemy weapons when yours explodes in multiplayer? thats brilliant mechanics right there.

i was one who purchased the map pack when it came out. i was never allowed to play an actual match on those because people without the map pack were allowed to join rooms and only kicked when the match began 16 people became 1 more often then id like to remember.

when ubisoft finally decided to give us ubi recommended maps they missed an opportunity to keep the community alive and interesting. making matters worse the player who created the ubi recommended map watchfire deleted it from the server because he couldn’t handle the fame his words not mine.

ubisoft also dropped the ball when they finally 6 months after the game came out they patched the game ruining the balance of the normal mode. 50 caliber snipers take two shots to kill, really? they also nerfed the mgl. players quit in droves, those who stayed only played the new hardcore mode after that where snipers were again over powered with no weapon able to counter it.

and for those who dislike the original game… you just don’t know any better apparently. the original had steal the sample and the most powerful map editor ever released on a console. time and again i read articles about games with map editors and farcry is never mentioned but, halos forge is? whatever.

Far Cry 2 is my favourite FPS. Loved the believable setting, the mature storyline and themes, the beautiful graphics and impressive physics, the many innovations, the freedom, the unprecedented immersion, the unrivalled ability to build tension, the exploration, the absorbing gameplay. I’d already played through it twice on PS3 but when I got a decent PC I immediately bought a copy for it.

While I can understand the game is not to everyone’s taste, some of the criticisms are baffling. Are people surprised that in a country in a state of civil war an armed unknown would be shot at on sight? Are these people aware how often soldiers of a modern democracy have shot unarmed innocents in times of war? The complaint that the actors spoke too fast I simply do not understand – it wasn’t something I’d thought whilst I played through the game, and indeed I appreciated what I took to be naturalistic and down to earth delivery. Other complaints such as always running out of ammo or having guns jam is usually down to the player. They were rarely an issue for me. Ammunition can be found at every checkpoint (many of which are entirely avoidable), while guns only jam after a great deal of use or if using the poor quality guns dropped by the faction mercenaries. That said, I enjoyed such factors, that every once in a while would force you to react and adjust on the fly – the unpredicatabilty of fire being another example. The reason the weapons are so unreliable is explained in the context of the game world – they are cheap, decades-old weapons which have been recirculated, reconditioned and resold at profit. The complaint about having to repair vehicles I disagree with too – the alternative would have been to have the vehicles immune to damage, or else be irreparable, increasing the chance of being left stranded far from a mode of transport.

Other criticisms I agree with to an extent. There could have been more variety in missions – though I do find, say, COD:MW more dull to play through again, being scripted and lacking the ability to approach each confrontation – both geographically and tactically – in whichever way you want. Stealth could have been better implemented; the use of the knife, for example, immediately alerts enemies to your location. The AI while I found generally to be good – enemies would attempt to flank you and worked in groups, were able to actually aim at a distance and so on – in some areas could have used some work. The driving model too could be much improved.

Anyway, I’m definitely looking forward to Far Cry 3 as you might have gathered. Hopefully they will take what I found so appealing about FC2 and build on it, though I’m worried that due to the game’s reception by some they will tone down or remove those aspects in an attempt to appease everybody.
