Toshiba showing Halo Reach in 3D at gamescom

Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:08 GMT By Joe Anderson

halo3d

Update: Apparently, this was a marketing gimmick by Toshiba. Read on for more details.

Original: Halo Reach is at gamescom, and being shown off in 3D.

As you can see from the shot above and the others here, users at the conference in Cologne can test out Halo Reach in stereoscopic 3D.

There has never been any confirmation that Halo Reach would support 3D, so this may just be the company’s way of saying, “it can be done.” Or not. We’ll find out more on this.

Halo Reach launches worldwide on September 14.

UPDATE

While we couldn’t get any definitive word on this, but thankfully, Eurogamer spoke with Bungie at gamescom and found out Toshiba was using Reach as a way for folks to check out their line of 3D television sets.

“It’s actually got nothing to do with us,” Bungie’s Brian Jarrard told Eurogamer. “It’s a Toshiba TV demo in the booth. It’s actually for their TV hardware. It’s got nothing to do with Xbox or the game itself.

“I heard the same thing and I was shocked. Apparently there’s a sign that says ‘Experience Reach in 3D.’ I was like, ‘Wait… There is? What?’

“Apparently it’s just an off the shelf TV set that supports 3D with glasses and they’re running a Reach trailer for people. So there you go.

“It’s just video playback with 3D glasses to emulate this TV’s ability to upscale to 3D. It’s a little misleading. It terrified us when we heard about it. We don’t have any control over it.

“That’s all it is. It’s just a little bit of a grab your attention marketing tactic. I can assure you there is no 3D-enabled build. We don’t have any specific support for anything like that in our game.”

So there ya go.

“so is the 360 capable of 3D? Sony keep on saying that only the ps3 is… i’m confused”

I would love o have just one usd for every time a video game company said that only their hardware/software/product was capable of doing some magicly thing that (in their minds) everyone in the word cares about.

I wouldn’t want 3D games, on any system(I still have flashbacks to the VirtualBoy). And as far as power of hardware and OP systems, I have to believe that honestly there isn’t much difference between the PS3 and the xb360.

I really doubt there is anything one system is capible of that the other one can’t mimic.

But if you like company lines:

Then only Xbox LIve really lets you play online with your friends.

Only the Wii games are fun for the whole family.

and this generation started when Sony said so, only PS3 can do true HD, and only PS3 offers 3D gaming.

In the end all of it is smoke screen grandstanding. Hype raged PR. Believe what you want.

Whoa wait first ME2 now Halo Reach on PS3….OMG best week ever! :D

    O.G.
“I really doubt there is anything one system is capible of that the other one can’t mimic”.

Still waiting for a UC2 match on the 360….and GOW3 nah could never happen. I put money on that one. Not to start a flame war brother but you really have to come to grips that the PS3 is a well built 10 year machine while the 360 was a 5 year console really. Gears3 is its peak, everything else will be gimmicks *cough NATAL cough* and LIVE.

Its just the truth look at the catch up game they played with an on board HDMI port, built in wifi, and now semi 3D.

Whilst PSN has been playing a catch-up game with Xbox Live as a quality of service for the past 4 years.

Are you even conscious of the drivel you spit most of the time? The features of a console mean absolutely nothing. Either a game is good or it is not. At end of the day, that’s all that matters.

Technology does not and never will define the quality of a game, so whether one console can do one thing or not means absolutely jack shit.

Ok O’Connor you tell me one game on the 360 that matches UC2 or GOW3 quality of story telling and gameplay…..let me stop you right their because 1. you’re lying 2. its either multiplatform and 3. you have bad taste anyway. (Who the F*** buys TEKKEN for 360 when they have a PS3…NOOBS that who)

Once again O.G. brought up a debate and I’m just saying my part which happens to be the truth. What does LIVE have to do with a game playing Mr. O’Connor? You want to talk about quality of PSN vs LIVE games….hahahahahaha….wheres LIVE equivalent of FLOWER,PIXEL JUNK MONSTERS,DANGER JOE,WIPEOUT HD,WARHAWK,and many more.

Only the games matters right? I bet 8 out of 10 people will find FLOWER more enjoyable and fun to play than Trials HD. You always love to pick and choose what to quote me on to make yourself look good. YOU’RE A LOSER O’CONNOR!

You want to play the PSN catching up to LIVE debate…(you cheap scape) When was the last time you’ve seen a successful JAPANESE social network anywhere online that attracted all nations to its likening…..oh yea thats right NONE! The only real one being PSN since SONY is a Japanese company.

Americans are the leaders of good social networks. TWITTER,FACEBOOK,MYSPACE,YOUTUBE,PORN HUB :D , and LIVE. All western social networked companies.

So don’t use that excuse. Plus LIVE has been out on two generations of XBOX and is back by a company called MICROSOFT! Are you familiar with their specialty O’CONNOR. Stop trying to be a F****** Aaron Greenburg Jr. please.

As far as I’ve seen, ‘stealth trolling’ has been going on a for a long time – but it takes a critical comment at Halo / 360′s expense for this ‘problem’ to get called out?

Not for nothing Tea, but I really didn’t think UC2 was very much fun. I didn’t enjoy the online MP at all. And the storymode(admitidly the heart of the game), didn’t toast my cookies either.

That being said Naughty Dog is what they are. A world class top notch talent.

But their games aren’t head shoulders above the rest of the game industry. They are at the top of the food chain, or at least near it. But not like the rest of the world are making NES quality games and ND come along and make a PS2 level one.

    Know what I mean.

UC2 is well done, but that is all it is. Lots of games are well done.

  22. Psychotext

@19: I’ve said it many times before, on many different games. I’m always impressed by a properly handled stealth troll.

  23. DrDamn

    @17
Not quite as simple as that. The proper stereoscopic examples out there Avatar, Invincible Tiger cram the two stereoscopic images into a single 720p frame buffer. Batman outputs both images at the same time with specific glasses used. Not to say 360 won’t ever support one of the more extensive 3D formats – but it hasn’t yet. Wonder what they are doing with Crysis 2?

This is an interesting read – if as usual with DF filled with a bit too much speculation and conjecture.

  24. theevilaires

O.G. I know exactly what you mean, but theres more people in my boat than yours saying its the game all devs need to follow example on. Sure it was a basic 3rd person shooter but the presentation, graphics, voice overs, and overall great pacing of the game made it feel like what we as gamers want. And thats games that can rival blockbuster movies.

I rather play an Uncharted game any time rather than watch the next Tom Cruise mission impossible.

and on that note the same for GOW3 it was nothing drastically new. It just took gaming to the level of one of Hollywoods greatest action movies. Thats what we are striving for right. Isn’t that the reason we went bananas over graphics back in the day.

and again not to bust M$ balls or be a fanboy but no XBOX 360 game has made me feel that way. NONE. What ME2? Thats on PS3 now :D …..and NO Halo Reach won’t do that, so don’t even go there. Never seen a movie that was filmed through the eyes all in a First Person perspective

I wanna see a 3rd person Halo game. Reach should have been 3rd person as its touted as their last Halo game right? (by Bungie)

That would have been a much better idea and gave the REACH title better meaning in my opinion. Hell even MW2 tried 3rd person in MP so Bungie I hope you have that planned as a surprise. Switch it up man. The last thing we need is another FPS Halo. You tried the RTS (which of course was doomed to fail) but now try TPS Halo M$.

“so is the 360 capable of 3D? Sony keep on saying that only the ps3 is… i’m confused”

Simple rule of thumb: Ignore any Sony PR as it is guaranteed to be embarassing posturing dung.

    Dual 1080p displays? Bullshit.
1080p 120fps for all games? Bullshit.
    Rival-beating power? Bullshit.
    3D only on PS3? Bullshit.

What makes me laugh is that currently the 360 supports far more 3DTV’s than the PS3.

The PS3 will not scale an image to 768p, which is the native resolution of a huge number of 3DTV’s. These TV’s will not display 3D in any mode but native resolution.

    Ironic, and quite hilarious.

i wouldn’t be surprised if they stuck a 3rd person camera option in Halo reach, as an extra. I’d imagine it would be really simple for them to implement considering all the vehicles are from the 3rd perspective

All what i saw at the Sony Center that the Motorstorm demo worked with 768p without any problem. There was even a meter that showed that.
For stupid fanboys like you, if it was a native resolution, than the games itself for 2d looked much worse.

“1080p 120fps for all games? Bullshit.”

There was never a word for 1080p resolution when Kutaragi said about 120 fps.
and there is no current TV that can enable proper 120 fps.
and he never said about all games, he said that they are capable of running at 120 fps.

    @Erthazus
There are some older Samsung plasmas with a 1366×768 display which do no accept the latest frame packed standards which the PS3 is using for 3D output. That’s actually an issue with the TV and Samsung’s latest version of the same TV will accept the recent standards. In the purest sense Gadzooks is right, but it is stretching things a little. The 360 cannot currently output a *recognised* 3D signal. It can put the frames together in a regular resolution and you can then tell the TV it’s meant to be 3D and it will interpret it as such.

The Dual 1080p displays point I think was a reference to the dual HDMI ports that were meant to be on the PS3. One got dropped before release.

But seriously 5 Halo games and not one a 3rd person shooter? M$ don’t use their brains over there do they. It would sell just off the name duh might as well test it out and if it doesn’t sell as many copies as Halo 3 did call it an experiment and save face.

@ Erthazus: Good job put that troll loser in his place. he thinks because he greased monkey me :D he can troll all he wants and get away from someone defending the PS3 and handing him his ass in the comments section. This is Gadzooks! people. A little bitch walking around VG247 with grease monkey security as his body guards cause he’s scared of my words HAHAHAHAHAHA! What are we in high school :D Someone copy and paste my comments so he can view them.

Don’t feel like changing my name just to skull f*** him and make him RROD everyday.

@39 after that comment i won’t post to you never. Ever. I will try.

after links about ***Invincible Tiger 3D TV Support*** and PC Monitor native resolution with PS3. God. You are so fucking stupid.
Especially with the Invincible Tiger 3D. That was a massive fail, especially when it uses anaglyph mode and i still could not figue out why you are posting me about that shitty PSN/XBLA anaglyph mode shit game when there is no even a Sony bravia type TV’s or Pioneer, Toshiba, in that list or it is not the official support of every game in the 3D.

You are definetily on the Xbox 360 crack.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI read here about what support 3D and what don’t support 3D. Just for the info.

Epic. Epic for the win. (c)

Oh yeah and about your post on forum, are you completely idiot posting a someone question about how some guy tries to connect PC to the monitor and trying to enable 1360*768? I asked you about a PROVE LINK for a second time. Don’t post, i won’t comment to the Invincible Tiger 3D fans.

    #41 5 years ago
  42. DrDamn

Invincible Tiger supports a lot more than anaglyph, it supports a variety of stereoscopic modes which modern 3d tvs understand (once you tell them what they are getting)

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Gadzooks!

    @Erthazus

Oh dear, you even fail at reading the links presented to you.

Invincible tiger supports shutter glasses 3D on both platforms, and the PS3 does not have a vertical scaler that allows 768p native output.

These facts do not simply go away because you choose to ignore them, are too damn lazy to read or simply dont understand.

Still waiting for that apology, btw.

im buying halo reach day 1 but all this 3D nonsense can lick my baby macking love sack.
3D in games is a waste of developement time, if it does indeed take away time during developement.

I’m hoping to see PS9 before i die. Get to work Sony!!!

    I love reading TEA’s comments :)

I’m looking forward to Halo Reach, but I must say it does look simply like a very very polished Halo (ie more of the same). Hopefully they’ve brought some new ideas (besides jetpacks) to the table.

I feel some of TEA’s points are valid. GEARS3 may very well be 360′s peak (looking FANTASTIC btw). Hopefully not, but I have more faith in the PS3 long term (obviously i know). I also must say U2 and God of War 3 really gave me that “next-gen” feeling that I don’t get as often these days as I feel we should be.

Oh, and on topic, I think it’s cool Microsoft/Bungie are showing off they can do 3D too.

  46. reask

Didnt know you had played it already Tea.
Not sure if you need gold for co op but if you fancy a few levels on it I am deffo up for it.

Still a few cheevos to get. ;)
OG might be into it as well.

    @ Dr.ghetto
Not to sure if Gears 3 will be the peak or not tbh.
Developers have an uncanny way of squeezing more and more out of the consoles.
    PS2 been a prime example.

I wonder if Kinnect flops will there be murmurs next year of the new Xbox?
If they could swing it for early 2012 with full BC it would be something else.

“Ok O’Connor you tell me one game on the 360 that matches UC2 or GOW3 quality of story telling and gameplay…..let me stop you right their because.”

Well, if you want to get into the argument of *gameplay*? Super Mario Galaxy.

Oh wait, does that not count because it’s not on the 360? Because the Wii isn’t a valid console? You completely missed my point. My argument was never “PS3 vs. 360″ It’s “the console *never* matters.”

    #48 5 years ago
  49. theevilaires

well thanks Dr.G I appreciate that. I do what I can to put some soul in this site :D

@ Reask you can bet the NextBox will have full B/C with 360 games and that controller won’t change in design….might gain a few features but it won’t change in terms of ergonomics.

and I’m pretty sure anything that has to deal with two humans interacting together in a video game on/over LIVE isn’t free. That dollar sign isn’t in M$ for nothing ;)

@ O’Connor you’re so full of S*** man. Seriously you’re the one who sent Gadzooks! that grease monkey script right. Lead by example you fool and stop troll quoting partial words to make yourself look like a hero. You will never be able to prove me wrong or out debate me in anything. I can sell ice cubes to an Eskimo kid. Now go somewhere and play Tekken on you XBOX360…..(he actually bought Tekken 6 for the 360 over the PS3 ver…..thats all anyone has to judge you by and know instantly you’re a F****** loser)

    Edit again: Comment #50….(thought so)

Thought so what. You comparing Mario galaxy to f***** UC2!? Are you F******* out of your mind dude. Oh boy you’re taking this way further than Irish whiskey now O’Connor. Yea I think some white powder substance might be included in your daily pleasures. Either that or that child hood incident where you were dropped on your head is now having serious effects on you mental capabilities.

(OMG he just put Mario Galaxy in the same league with UC2) I’m speechless…totally F******* speechless!

    So much fail.

For a start: If Sony have added support for non-480i/576i/720p/1080p native screen resolutions then GREAT, seriously, but I’ve heard nothing about it.

infarct it depends from the tv and not what the system builds in i mean i got the old xbox and i connect it on my led tv and it looks better and with more good lighting then in a normal on
the console is responsible of the frame rate the design of the game but when it come to colors all the work is done by your tv
