Expect DOOM 4 to take less time than RAGE, says Carmack

id Software technical guru John Carmack has told OPM UK anyone expecting to wait a long time for DOOM 4 will have a shorter wait than first thought.

Carmack told the mag the shooter shouldn’t take as long to get out the door, unlike RAGE, which was announced in 2007 at QuakeCon, and won’t be out until next year, producer Tim Willits told VG247 back in May.

“Well we’ve got Doom 4 going on right now below our feet here,” he said.

“The Doom team are all sped up and working on this technology base – I’m not really at liberty to discuss much about it, but it’s going full steam ahead right now.

He adds: “It shouldn’t take as long to ship as Rage. It’s already in the pipeline and we feel good about it.”

id’s Todd Hollenshed told Nathan Grayson at last year’s QuakeCon to expect first information on the game this year. The opening keynote of this year’s event with Hollenshed and Carmack is tomorrow night.

Go figure.

Just FYI: Carmack’s on Twitter now. Go nuts.

Anyone would think you’d be too busy with your new PS Move, Stacey.

I do hope this doesn’t mean the game is going to be a bit rushed and therefore a bit rubbish :/

Well he actually said it wouldn’t take as long _to ship_ as RAGE – I assume that means dev time won’t be as long, not that it will actually ship before RAGE.

“Expect DOOM 4 to come sooner than RAGE, says Carmack”
Title is misleading. Carmack is saying that the time taken to develop Doom 4 will be shorter than the time for RAGE. The title implies that Doom 4 will be available sooner than RAGE. Which is incorrect.

All he’s saying is they don’t expect it to be in development as long as Rage was/is. Not that it’s going to shipt first. Pretty cut and dry.

@5. Exactly.

They better throw the Doom 3 Level designer out and make D4 a true action game in vein of Doom 1 and 2.

I agree. I want some memorable levels in Doom 4. Still remember some from Doom 1 and the beginning of Quake 2 is unforgettable. Don’t remember anything from Doom 3 except the second level or something and it wasn’t particularly good.

By the time Rage gets here, we’ll all be living in a post-nuclear wasteland.

I’m interested to see what Specs DOOM 4 will use when it’s going to launch. MY PC will just blow the fuck out on medium when it launches. But by the time i will significantly upgrade my PC.

Of course Doom 4 on consoles will be on minimum, same like with Metro 2033 was.
But playing Crytek or ID games on consoles is like doing a suicide at least for me.
