Bungie: “Past experiences allowed us to make Reach the best possible game”

haloreach8

Bungie community director Brian Jarrard and campaign designer Niles Sankey believe the studio’s past experiences developing the Halo franchise helped it create it’s best possible game.

Speaking with NowGamer, the Bungie fellas chatted a bit about Reach and how the developmental nightmare that was Halo 2 made it stronger.

“Ten years ago we had a very small team. I think Halo shipped with about 40 people on the team and it very much still had that ‘guys in a basement’ feel, just trying to wheel out a game and make it the best we could,” said Jarrard. “The great part is that most of the same people are still with us today at the top and we still maintain that core philosophy of making great universes and the kind of games we want to play. That philosophy still drives our studio today.

“More than anything I think we’ve learned how to grow, as well as efficiencies and production, as well as learning how to plan better. You know, everyone’s heard the horror story of Halo 2’s development and how we had to go right through, starting from scratch and basically not having a plan in action.

“Going into our next decade we can look back and use Halo as a great road map and use that as an awesome framework, a real plan that actually maps out our new universe, our new experiences and the types of stories we plan to share with our fans for ten more solid years.”

Designer Niles Sankey made known Reach ended up with a lot more than was originally planned, and on top of it, the developmental process was “the smoothest” ever for the firm.

“I think contradictory to Halo 2, Halo: Reach was probably the smoothest game we’ve ever developed,” he said. “Not only did we not really cut a whole lot from the original plan, we ended up doing a lot more than we set out to do.

“So our past experiences allowed us to make Reach the best possible game and beyond that, the future’s very bright.”

Halo: Reach releases on September 14 worldwide for Xbox 360 in three different options, and you can catch the latest campaign trailer for it here.

HEH! It’s just 343 Industries’ turn to milk this IP. As long as M$ has a console, HALO IP would not rest and relax.
Don’t forget that if it wasn’t for HALO 3 (a game created purely for milking & nailing InstallBase), XBOX 360 wouldn’t have been this successful.

ODST was as generic as RDR.

long live Halo.

why do people often call halo generic when there are more obvious games, like every single modern warfare styled game (Cod, MoH, Battlefield…) there are not too many space shooters out there but when one comes along, apparentally it’s ‘generic’, & while the Forge mode is likely to miss a terrain editor, it’s still one of the most innovative map editors in recent console histroy & the community & support which comes along with this is phenominal

Because they have no better arguments in their arsenal?

#9

…and because they don’t understand games. :)

ODST was still better than 90% of the competition.

Reach looks fucking awesome and I can’t wait until 343 let me play as Chief again.

Whats generic to one person maybe original to another person, its all about preference.

#11

Mike
30/07/10, 7:57 pm

Nope. If you think the Halo franchise is generic, then you obviously didn’t play any CONSOLE shooters before or after Halo 1, as just about everything before didn’t come close, and everything since has borrowed from Bungie in some way.

A game that sets the standard for console shooters can’t be generic. It’s the exact opposite of what the word means.

the only way it can be generic to one and refreshing to another is when the latter didn’t play as many games as the first person.

and ODST was probably the most ‘creative’ Halo since 2001. at least compared to previous ones and most other console shooters, it wasn’t nearly the same experience.. open world gameplay, unusual for Halo down to earth characters, a couple of clever gameplay tweaks. all that makes it at least ‘somewhat refreshing’.

Yep and then you have the fanboys who deride you for saying not everyone finds Halo original or good. And Half life 2 says hi btw.

i don’t know whom are you addressing that, but HL2 was a 2004 PC title, ported to consoles, as well as being an exceptional game.

i honestly loved fps when it seemed ‘fresh’ with the MoH series on the ps1, until some point later in the ps2 life cycle i started to get bored with MoH, i also did play CoD 1, but did not like it nearly as much, these games to ME, are becoming generic, TimeSplitters 2 got me excited about fps again along with star wars battlefront 1 & 2, but this gen, the only fps i enjoyed was halo 3 & resistance 2 & a little bit of L4D2 among a few others i may have forgotten

Its addressed at you two, if someone thinks its generic thats thier opinion, also Mike Goldeneye and Perfect Dark easily equal Halo in terms of revelence. So id say thats been proven as wrong. You said ODST is better then 90% of the competition Daman based on what your opinion?

#18

Mike
30/07/10, 9:21 pm

So yeah, you’re comparing Halo with seminal titles like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, my point proved.

#19

DaMan
30/07/10, 9:22 pm

in other words, if i say Devil May Cry is as generic as Dante’s inferno that’s my opinion. and anyone who disagrees is a fanboy.

like I said, if you really want to go that way then it’s not about preference but about how many games you played.

what, really, i did?

“Most other console shooters” surely thats opinion? Someone may prefer the stylings to DF to Dmc. and Mike you said Halo set the standards for console fps but Goldeneye and PD did that was my point. The setting of Halo is space marines taking on Aliens, thats why people find it generic.

#24

LOLshock94
30/07/10, 9:33 pm

yeah but most people make it turn out to be bad

“Most other console shooters”
in terms of gameplay and presentation, it’s one of the most creative yeah. nope, not opinionated.

“Someone may prefer the stylings to DF to Dmc”
LOL! seriously, man. bullshit. not only you know what we’re talking about. the games. and my whole point was about gameplay, but anyway, that has nothing to do with originality in both of them. DMC borrows from anime, DI borrows from western culture. silly really. besides, when DMC was released the japanese didn’t yet milk those gothic designs they so much enjoy.

besides it doesn’t matter if Halo has a generic plot. I never denied that. what matters is how it’s being presented in a clever, competent way.

you say ‘fanboys deride you’, TH, looks like it’s the other way around, man.

#29

The Hindle
30/07/10, 9:46 pm

Thats all opinion man, a lot of people dont think that at all, you come across as a cunty elitest on here i swear. The guy said Halo was generic i thought he meant story you thought gameplay, and obviously if he thinks its generic then thats his tastes in it. You being a Halo fanboy may love Halo but other people dont share that opinion. Pat where is that ignore button.

#30

Crysis
30/07/10, 9:50 pm

Looks like some people are taking some comments right to heart, is it really that important whter another thinks something is generic or not?

#31

DaMan
30/07/10, 9:58 pm

that’s not true at all. seriously.. you obviously don’t enjoy Halo, and you obviously read what you like to read.

and nah, that’s not opinionated. you have to validate your opinions, it doesn’t matter if many people hate halo for saving MS 2001 console. or hate it now for being the best seller. sadly, that’s the whole reason for all these converstaions.

“The guy said Halo was generic i thought he meant story you thought gameplay, ”
I ‘thought’ he meant both actually. it’s shallow to dismiss it as a ‘generic fps’.
anyway, look, ie ODST had a generic plot. it wasn’t about the story itself, like I said it was about it’s presentation. that’s what sets in apart from most other ones.

I don’t ‘like’ Halo that much, the only ones i beat were 1,3(not even in enirety since i didn’t have a 360 back then) and ODST. I’m not being any elitist, you’re just overreacting and hate how you can’t validate anything. no offence, man.

#32

The Hindle
30/07/10, 10:01 pm

So basically youre saying ODST is better then most other console fps and youre saying thats fact is that correct?

Modern warfare had an amazing presentation, Half life has amazing presenatation id say better then ODST, you seem to not be able to understand that some people dont like Halo and find some games to be better.

Opinion is preference some people perefer the more relistic gameplay of mw to Halo you cant validate that.

#33

Crysis
30/07/10, 10:05 pm

@Hindle, he didn’t say anything like that, he’s saying that it was different from the common halo games

#34

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:09 pm

this is what you would love me to say. come on man, admit it. because it’s far harder to validate it being better than Killzone2 than it is to do the same with the things i was talking about. and it always ends the same way. .it’s always possible to end it with ‘agreed to disagree’.

no.

what number 33 said.

I keep saying the same, comment no.12:
“ODST was probably the most ‘creative’ Halo since 2001. at least compared to previous ones and most other console shooters, it wasn’t nearly the same experience.. open world gameplay, unusual for Halo down to earth characters, a couple of clever gameplay tweaks. all that makes it at least ’somewhat refreshing’.”
it was refreshing. as a Halo game, and as an fps.

#35

LOLshock94
30/07/10, 10:11 pm

TBH i like halo but ODST came out it killed halo for me in a way because it was just halo 3 with less options but obv reach will be better

#36

The Hindle
30/07/10, 10:12 pm

I cant stand KZ 2 imo so no not really but anyway.

#37

Crysis
30/07/10, 10:12 pm

then again, wouldn’t switching from an fps to an rts with halo wars be the most ‘creative’ thing done with halo since the original? or do most the people who have played it wish they had removed the word halo from it? personally i enjoyed it for a little bit but there was absolutely nothing to return to, no replay value what so ever, atleast imo

#38

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:14 pm

you missed my point, TH. you might feel like that, but it would seem you want to show Halo being inferior. that’s how it came across to me, you obviously don’t like it.

and I ‘ll tell you what, i do think the game is overrated. but so are many other top reviewed games on Gamerankings/Metacritic. not that much though, it did a lot, and it’s a great title/series.

@21
Right. But look at HALO 3. In 2007 we had some graphical monsters like Assassin’s creed. But M$ realeased HALO 3 with outdated graphics (gameplay is perfect as any other halo.) just to nail their IB and gather some attention on XBOX 360. And now… HALO WARS, HALO 3:ODST in 2009. HALO: REACH (Real Halo 3) is not out yet, another HALO 3 is announced. If this is not milking, then what is?!

I dont think ive actually bad mouthed Halo in this thread, ive been arguing this thread about ODST being more creatitive then other fps, its creatitive but the most creatitive thats just preference.

What started this was me saying whats generic to some isnt to others or basically to each is own.

#42

LOLshock94
30/07/10, 10:23 pm

ODST was meant to be downloadble content but i was turned into a waste of money but halo wars was a different it was the same FPS it was a stratagy
ohh and like i said as long as its good it aint milking and like crysis said when the milk goes sour you know you dont want to try that shit

#43

Crysis
30/07/10, 10:24 pm

i could bet it was M$ choice to turn it from a moderately priced dlc to a full pledged retail game

#44

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:31 pm

again: I said the most creative Halo since the original one, and one of the most creative console fps. how ‘s that hard to understand, dude?

stop putting words into my mouth.

yeah, and like i said it’s not about preference. if you thought ODST was generic, you’re being shallow. and if you thought X-Blades was original you haven’t played many games. it’s not about taste, no matter how some people would like to believe that.

#45

The Hindle
30/07/10, 10:37 pm

Yep we are just going around in circles, so anyone who says ODST is generic is shallow wow ok. It is about taste thats what gaming is, taste. You dont like Gow yet do people say youre wrong to think that no they dont. Im done here anyway.

#46

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:40 pm

funny really, what did you expect? i can as well say Gears is the same experience as Halo and Max Payne, because they all have shooting stuff in them. is it not shallow? yeah it is.

can you dislike it? sure, just like i do with GoW.

#47

The Hindle
30/07/10, 10:46 pm

in my opinion ODST was shallow 5 to 6 hours and £40 and i can validate that as its what most reviewers say. Can you disagree? sure.

#48

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:50 pm

what are you saying now?

I said it myself that the game was pretty much an expansion pack. that it was aimed at mostly series fans. that it wasn’t worth the price for most.

try something else. keep proving my earlier points, really.

#49

LOLshock94
30/07/10, 10:53 pm

i thought it was aimed at new people or people that didnt have any of the map pack and then add a lil story to it

#50

DaMan
30/07/10, 10:55 pm

that as well, maybe. it did have all the maps.

for newcomers it’s overpriced, the campaign was too short.
