Blizzard: WoW movie still happening despite slow process

Friday, 23rd July 2010 17:48 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Blizzard’s Vice president of creative development, Chris Metzen, has said the progress on the World of Warcraft movie has slowed, but it’s still happening.

Speaking at Comic Con during a WoW merchandising panel, Metzen said director Sam Raimi is still “very, very passionate” about making the movie, and once the screenplay treatment is finished, “hopefully it’ll start moving very quickly, very soon.”

Back in April, Metzen told VG247 Blizzard was “kinda getting a lot of values together” regarding the story and how best to do the movie.

Sounds like things haven’t evolved much further in the past few months, but all big projects take time, especially if it’s to be done right.

On another WoW related note, Metzen also announced during the panel the next WoW novel will be called The Shattering, and gives readers a backstory leading up to the Cataclysm expansion.

Metzen said there are “dark times ahead” for Azeroth with Deathwing returning, and large parts of the game world will be destroyed by earthquakes.

“It’s going to get rough out there for a while,” he said. “But there’s a plan. The great heroes always rise to the top.”

Thanks, Joystiq.

By the time they do release it, everyone would have moved to the next best thing. Transformers 10, Batman 6, etc. They need to work on it while WOW is still at the top.

Euro? You must be mistaken because Raimi is American.

@2 Except that the movie is going to be CGI and will be made by Blizzard with Blizzard writers, so fuck off pal.

It’s going to be as always, Masterpiece ;)

@5 Oh crap. This is serious business. I remember they said something like: How WOW can be a Live action?

    Thats dangerous.

What I think it is they don’t want to have a FF situation because CGI costs a lot more in production versus live action. Not too worried what I would be worried about is Sam Raimi the Spiderman movies have been hit or miss at least for me. I only enjoyed the second , loathed the first and 3rd.

@4 it will be shit…plain and simple and if it is CG the I’ll die laughing cause it’ll be DOA. If square can’t make a successful Final Fantasy CG movie then what gives you the idea Blizzard can?

PC fanboy you’re in for a big let down.

“what gives you the idea Blizzard can?”

you never saw Blizzard World Of Warcraft CGI movies right? Of course NOT.

Go play with your toys, Blizzard is the best gaming company that makes the best CGI in this industry. They are doing it for YEARS.

“PC fanboy you’re in for a big let down.”

Except NOT, i enjoy not just PC gaming or console gaming. I enjoy the BEST gaming available, sucker :D

you don’t know about Blizzard nothing. Go live in your cave.

@Phoenix, agree. I don’t know, i hope it will be great. Sam Raimi Spider man 1-2 were kick ass, third movie just sucked big ass.

I have no doubt that this is going to be ‘the’ movie that sets apart the notion that all game to film tie-in’s are dire.

With Blizzard plus the Lore plus Sam Riami, attach the Lich King story to it and enchance it by a couple of hundred million dollars… there’s no way it will fail.

@ theevilaires, have you seen the Lich King trailer? that was done in-house with the Blizzard CG team, in my opinion it blows FF Advent Children out of the water (which was a good film unto itself)

    Here it is btw:
    SC2 trailer also:

Live action plus some of that spiffy CG and i’ll buy a ticket to see it.

    I agree with Erthazus completely.

Oh and also, how in the name of FUCK is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children a bad CG Final Fantasy film??

    The Spirits Within – Yes.

    Advent Children – No.

It’s gonna be from an Alliance perspective though, so clearly it’s meant to appeal to women and children.

    Lol @ SpiritusB,

I’m on both sides of the fence when it comes to factions myself, but all fans will enjoy the film and even if your not familiar with the franchise I’m sure people will like it anyway.
