Confirmed: Kinect priced at £129 and $149, bundles and 4Gb Arcade announced

kinect

Microsoft’s just confirmed a £129 price-point for Kinect in the UK. The sensor will cost $149 in the US and €149 in mainland Europe.

Microsoft has also confirmed the previously rumoured 4GB 360 Arcade replacement.

The console, Kinect and Kinect Adventures packaged together is to cost £250.

Kinect Adventures, includes 20 “adventures”: it’s the whitewater Indiana Jones thing used to show off the camera at E3.

“Kinect for Xbox 360 offers fantastic new ways to be entertained for the whole family,” said Xbox Europe boss, Chris Lewis.

“With full body, voice and multiplayer play straight out of the box, Kinect is a unique way for everyone to enjoy controller-free fun and entertainment.”

Kinect bundled with Kinect Adventures will cost £130.

“More than” 15 games will be available at launch, Microsoft said today,

The 4Gb 360 is to launch on August 20 in the UK. It’s the Slim design with 4Gb of flash memory, basically.

Kinect games – including Kinectimals, Kinect Sports and Kinect Joy Ride, will retail for £40.

MS confident 360 owners will see value in Kinect

In the wake of the announcement, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said the firm is confident consumers will see value in Kinect’s price-point, as it includes the $50 Kinect Adventures game as well as the camera, essentially making the sensor a $100 purchase.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Greenberg said marketing research conducted by Microsoft found consumers weren’t leery of the price, and Kinect shooting to the top of Amazon.com pre-orders was further proof the company has got it right.

“We obviously don’t make pricing decisions without doing our research. We’ve done a number of pricing studies on a global scale across a whole variety of audience segments,” he said. “When we talked to consumers about the different types of experiences you get with Kinect, we found that that sensor with the full game at $149 does quite well.

“We’ve even seen some of the retailers put up some speculative pre-orders for just the sensor as a standalone at $149. On Amazon.com, for example, it jumped to one of the top two things in the videogame category coming out of E3. Now we’re saying it’s not just $149, but you’re also getting a full $50 retail game as part of that.

“That said, there’s a tremendous opportunity here to drive new console sales. There will be a whole new wave of consumers looking for all new ways to experience games and entertainment. To be able to do that with the console plus the sensor and the game at that value is pretty unprecedented.”

Kinect itself has no date for Europe, but Microsoft announced a US release of November 4 during E3.

Chris Lewis has said previously Kinect will launch during November in Europe across the key markets

KINECT is way too expensive, just like Sony’s MOVE! :(

It’s targeted at a casual audience, so most likely this will only sell well to new customers who buy it bundled together with new consoles. And even THAT is questionable!

    Kinect & Move are DOA!

The price for the 360 with Kinect is pretty decent, and the 4GB of memory will be more than enough for the casual audience its aimed at. They’re definitely inflating the price of the peripheral by itself though.

Looking forward to it though, and intend to buy it on launch.

I’m guessing it’s probably going to be about 149 in Euros.

Agreed. Both are far, far too expensive. Kinect is almost double the price it should be, in fact.

Masssive lols. The arcade pack isn’t so bad, but without any real killer app, I can’t see this shifting much as a stand alone.

Although that said the popularity of the 360 S caught me off guard too, so maybe they’ve got a loyal enough user base to take the hit.

Why are you guys saying the Move is too expensive? $100 and you get the two controllers, camera, and a game…. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me :-\

    @13 Dance Central.

Regarding price, Microsoft have the money to keep this going as long as they have to get it into people’s homes, even if that takes 5 years.

  16. Erthazus

Can’t say if this thing will move or not, but the price is just ridiculous in my opinion.

I have PS Eye, but even with that i won’t buy Playstation move.

Move and Natal don’t have decent games, just Rip Off’s. (Sorcery for Move is cool, but one game? Lol no.)

@15 Dance what? It is that game where some nerd at E3 started to dance like a pro? Or it is that game from Konami’s Press conference? Dance Masters or?

Jesus Christ, gaming is in a big danger.

That’s a total rip off. If they don’t drop that price very soon after launch I can’t see it doing well at all. Can buy so many other things with £129. You can even buy the whole console for cheaper than that.

Quite gutted at that price. It’s a shame, I’ve gone from definitely purchasing Kinnect to waiting for a decent price drop before I purchase it. I would’ve bought it day one if it was £100 or less. Not willing to pay that extra £30, ah well…life goes on.

    #22 5 years ago

    @41:

Market it to who? It’s not aimed at core gamers. It’s aimed at casuals… The type of people who are buying Wii’s. The type of people who don’t currently own a 360.

So MS are basically going to have to try to convice people to buy a 360 (£199) and Kinect (£130) as well.

Why would any casual do that, when they could just get a Wii (£150) instead?

    #43 5 years ago
  44. Erthazus

@41, even if consumers will think that they are great (LOL), still to buy one of these devices you need to go through barriers.

One kinect is a puzzle, good luck for casual Mom to buy Xbox 360, than connect it to Xbox live, to use the controller and connect Kinect. Jesus.

    @50 No.

It’s beautiful. Fact. But for that XBL/PSN title to buy Natal or Move is just ridiculous.

Only a tool will do that, there are lots of these types of games without a need in move or natal.

It’s not original in anyway. It’s a simple shooter but with beautiful art style.

@50 I never used rumble for Rez. It distracted from the sound in the game itself.

People seem to be incapable of looking at this long term. Not only will it eventually go down in price, but its also likely to be shipped with more units in the future.

Kinect is here to stay for a while, whether you like it or not.

also, u brits are paying an extra an extra 33% over the american price, just thought u should know, even we aussies are getting this cheaper than you, we’re paying $24/£15 above the US, u guys are paying $50/£32 above the US (these are American Dollars, not Aussie dollars)

Pretty sure the companies can get their tax back, in the end, it only effects us (the consumer)-we aussies pay GST-which is about 10% of every single product.
so in the UK, do companies increase the price of the product to compensate for the tax, which they later get back?

Anyone here buy Rockband or Guitar Hero Band packs? Anyone remember spending over $200.00 for that? Raise your hands now. As far as I know those games sold just find at that price.

You could get Kinect with the game included and another game of your choice for the same cost as a Rockband or Guitar Hero set when it came out.

Sure we’d all like it cheaper but $149.99 isn’t much out of whack now is it.

Show me one really good game that has not yet been shown for Kinect and it’ll cinch the deal for me.

The value chart that MS have produced is a tacit admission that it is expensive.

  75. freedoms_stain

@72, they certainly don’t get all their tax back, however VAT is a form of sales tax burdened on the consumer rather than the manufacturer, 17.5% of the value is added in tax, 20% as of January. Increasing sales tax btw, very common tactic by conservative/right wing governments to increase tax revenue while making sure the richest pay a smaller %age of their earnings in taxes as lower earners by necessity spend more of their earnings on the essentials just to live.

Having had time to sleep on this and contemplate it more carefully…… it still looks fucking ridiculous even in the cold light of day. :-D

I seriously can’t imagine this being anything more than dead in the water from day one. It’s too expensive for the hardcore without serious games, it’s too expensive for the casuals who don’t already own a 360, it’s too expensive for the curious who aren’t sure whether they’ll like it or not, it’s…. too expensive. Full stop. The end.

    @ 73 Holesome

I bought Guitar Hero, all Versions, Game w/guitar for $19.99 US on Amazon 24 hour Deal of the Day! Free Shipping NO TAX

I bought DJ Hero, Turn Table w/ Game for $29.99 on Amazon 24 hour Deal of the Day! Free Shipping and NO TAX.

I bought Rock Band 1, That Huge Massive Box with Drums and Guitar for $49.99 on clearance at a Local WalMart with Tax $55.00 US.

There is NO WAY…NO FREAKING WAY I will pay $150.00 US plus 10% Tax in my State for the Kinect.

I will buy it on Clearance around $40.00 US just for the Freaking Microphone. I love the Wii’s Microphone that sits on my TV. I HATE wearing a Headphone on the Xbox 360…So I will buy it for the Microphone when the Kinect goes on Sale or Clearance at $40 US or less, and believe me it certainly will go on Clearance!!

So while you Holesome will pay TOP price for an over priced product, I will not and have not to this point and don’t plan on doing it any time soon, unless of course the Economy gets better and they quit taking money out of My Fidelity accounts and Manna in the form of GOLD bars fall from the Heavens…and that looks to be at least 2 years away…SIGH!!

This should be great news now that Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 with built-in WiFi capabilities. For those who already have the old Xbox 360 though, who still want to get it connected to the internet wirelessly, here’s a nice alternative. Check out the Netgear Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit. This device acts as an adapter that connects to your wireless router, so you can get your Xbox 360 connected to the internet even if it’s far from your wireless router.
