Opdahl: Reach goes well beyond what anyone’s done before

Chris Opdahl, Halo Reach’s lead campaign designer, has said Bungie’s next game will have moments which go “well beyond what anyone has done before on a console.”

Speaking in response to community questions, Opdahl talked about the size of the task facing the team.

“We absolutely could not have made Reach without all of the engineering magic that went on. The sheer volume of code changes and how much more we can do because of them is staggering,” he said.

“We have imposters, AI LOD, a new memory management system, networking (both synchronous and asynchronous), neuticle system, Big Battle flocks, new flying vehicle behaviors, stimulus system, new damage model, physics updates and improvements, perception models, lighting model upgrades… And that is just the few things off the top of my head.

“All of those together allow us to make moments that we have never been able to do in a Halo game. We are also able to achieve a visual fidelity for those moments (at the scale of a Halo encounter that you have come to expect) well beyond what anyone has done before on a console.”

Halo Reach is set to release for Xbox 360 this September, it will be the last Halo game from Bungie as it concentrates on its new, Activision-published IP.

If that’s true, then they’ve chosen some fairly sedate footage to show off thus far. It looks solid enough, but I’ll have to see a lot more from it to see it go anywhere close to the claim that it goes well beyond what anyone else has done on a console.

“beyond what anyone else has done on a console.”

don’t believe that BS. Visuals of that game for the first person shooter are absolutely nothing special. Compared to it’s old grandfather like Unreal 2007 (or any other shooter) it’s absolutely stunning how they are trying to convince fanboys “well beyond what anyone has done before on a console”. Do you believe in this shit?

The game already perfectly solid. It really doesn’t need hyperbole like this.

What Opdhal is saying is kinda true, but doesnt really mean much.

He’s not saying the visuals will be the best on console. We know that isnt the case, and that isnt what Halo is all about.

What he’s saying that there isnt a console shooter with the level and quantity of complex AI in action that looks as good as Reach. Well that’s a bit of a pointless statement as Halo sits in a category all of it’s own. There simply isnt a shooter out there that does AI and tight, responsive control in the way Halo does, so of course its going to be ‘best in class’.

Improved lighting, resolution, post-processing, etc is just icing on the cake. Bungie know what makes a great game and that isnt the rendering pipeline. It’s AI, level design and tight gunplay and those elements are what puts Halo in a league of its own.

    We’ll see.

Halo has never impressed me, despite all the claims and the hype, but we’ll see.

Will be awesome, sell shitloads and get great reviews… much to the chagrin of elitist cockstains who don’t like it only because it’s fashionable to knock something so popular.

Butthurted Halo fanboy, you are not in the right topic. This is about “engineering magic” that Halo lacks since first game release.

and about these “elitists”, i don’t know what are you talking about when there are amazing games like HL, Diablo 3, WOW or Starcraft II that are great games and popular as hell.

Love Halo, but i am a PS3 owner, Reach is one of the few games which i may consider getting another 360 4, Bungie has done an excellent job creating such a reknown universe we all know & love, not many, if any others have created such an engaging universe before which is why i have so much respect for Bungie, granted there are games with deep, deep bacgrounds like Star Wars & the Warhammer/40000 universe, but they were not created as intention for a video game, never the less, i stil respect the mionds behind them aswell

Reach looks like it could be a good game, maybe a Halo sequel that finally lives up to the original? I just cant wait to see what Bungie do next.

@10: Halo’s always been a single player first experience as far as I’ve been concerned.

Same here, I’ve played all the Halo SP campaigns through too many times to count. The AI is so dynamic and engaging that it makes every firefight unique and no other developer can design a good assault scenario like Bungie.

Halo is best played co-op in my opinion though. The levels are designed so you can almost always make use of ambushes and diversionary and flanking tactics.

Funny thing is I just started playing 3 again on legendary and I have to say It really is such a good game.
Graphics are mediocre especially the lip sync but the sheer fun in the game-play just surpasses most other similar games.

    Halo ftw I say. :) :) :)
