Fishlabs CEO: iPad and other “mobile devices” will surpass Xbox 360 graphics in a year

ipad2

Remember when you first booted up Tekken on your PlayStation One, and your eyes welled up with tears as you declared that graphics would never get any better than that? Remember when your PS2 – and even your itsy-bitsy PSP – none-too-gently booted your PS1 into the retirement home?

Well, according to mobile game dev Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade, the Xbox 360′s about to receive some similarly stiff competition – from the iPad, of all things.

“I think you can expect some time next year to have rendering capabilities on mobile devices superior to the Xbox 360,” Schade said during a Develop session entitled “Mobile becomes Console” – a phrase some of you might remember from Mark Rein’s pro-mobile comments last month.

“And I believe by the end of the year the ‘iDevices’ could have sold 120m copies, which puts them close to a par with the PS2’s 140m,” he added.

Fishlabs has developed ‘iDevice’ games like Rally Master Pro, Gladiator, and Galaxy on Fire.

Powerful as Xbox 360, he says? Well then, break out the popcorn, folks, because it looks like we’re in for a battle of the tiny titans. Taking all bets!

At first I was thinking why didnt he mention ps3, then I noticed its Apple, so its probably a good cheap shot at MS….”idevices” would include what? bc if you’re gonna group them, and now consider them consoles, make sure you add ps1, 2, and 3

No way in hell. The Ipad is nowhere as powerful; heck, I wouldn’t even rate it on top of the handheld market, let alone consoles. This guy is just an attention-seeking bum. Something like a PSP2 might be able to replicate just a bit better-than-PS2 graphics or around the same, but no handheld device will ever come close to a next-gen console, at least for the next ten years. What a tosser.

PS3 is still trying to do so, let alone iPad:lol:

PS3 is trying to do what Gene? Surpass the 360 in graphics? Oh boy I’m not even….yes I will…Uncharted2,God of War3,KZ2,and Heavy Rain.

I’m going to sleep now.

iPad is an under powered, not enough memory, not enough hard drive space, 8×10 expensive picture frame and eReader…IMO

@5 Those titles weren’t ps3 exclusives due to the xbox not being able to handle their graphics like you suggest. It was due to space limitations on disks, no hard drive as standard for all users, and memory issues. Plus they also had exclusivity clauses with Sony. The 2 consoles graphics are pretty even, both dwindling into insignificance since they were developed due to superior technology in newer pcs.

The iPad is just a joke for games. I’m sure there will be more powerful tablets out by the end of the year which handle games a lot better.

So what’s the big deal about this? It’s not like it sayz anything much, really. It’s not like the 360 can’t already be surpassed in graphics by the PC and PS3. It’s like if Nintendo would come and say that the 3DS will have better graphics than the Gameboy Advance

@droid,the 360 cannot handle the graphics of unchartered 2 or god of war 3,im no fanboy, its just fact mate, face it the PS3 is a lot more powerful than the 360,i still love my 360 and play it more but the ps3 exclusives are far better the anything on the xbox,do you secretly want one but cant afford it?its alright,i wont tell anyone.

@10 That’s not what the devs said when when they were producing those games I’m afraid. The PS3 may be slightly better in tech terms but if you’d ever seen any comparison screens for similar games on both platforms, or seen both side by side in real life, you’d know that there’s almost no difference. The only reason one does slightly better than the other is due to more memory and slightly better draw distances. It’s also how well a game is optimised for the console, which is allegedly easier to do for xbox programming.

Daft arguments about ‘power’ aside. The ipad is very far from ‘a joke for games’ its the most exciting new gaming platform in years. Plenty of traditional games don’t work so well but there are lots of games which really benefit from the form factor.

You probably could pack 360 beating specs into a slate, but it’d be pretty huge and the battery would last about 20 minutes.

On top of that touchscreen controls don’t compare to a proper gamepad, no way no-fuckin-how.

@11, certainly it’s supposed to be easier to program for the 360, but it’s pretty clear that the top PS3 devs can wrangle more out of a PS3 than the top 360 devs can wrangle out of a 360.

All you need to do is put it on a stand and hook up a wireless controller and voilà, home console.

The ipad is a complete joke for games, the main joke being the bloody price of the thing.

That was one of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever read, the difference in processing power between the PowerVR GPU in the iDevices line and the ATI GPU in the 360 is huge. Thats not even taking into account CPU, RAM or resolution rendering.

Not only that such mobile devices cannot ramp up such performance without guzzling power and needing more aggressive cooling so yeah this guy is just a full of shit Apple fanboy.

This article is such a joke…not even worth the read, they can try to get up to the graphics of X Box 360 and PS3 but by then the X box and PS3 will have surpassed those graphics and the iPad (giant iTouch) will still be years behind…
