White PS3 Slim and bigger HDs confirmed for Japan, “no announcements” for Europe

Japan is to get new PS3 Slim models with bigger hard drives and a white casing, Sony said today, but has told VG247 there are “no announcements to make in terms of new SKUs for Europe.”

Two new machines with bigger drives will go on sale in Japan on July 29, one with 160Gb and one with 320Gb of storage. The current Slim has a 120Gb HD.

The 160GB model will retail for ¥29,980 ($342) and the 320GB version will sell for ¥34,980 ($399). The 160Gb machine will cost the same as the current 120Gb model (thanks, metamorphic).

Both versions will come in the black finish of current models, but the 160GB version will also be available in white. Matching DualShock 3s and console stands will also be released.

Sony will also offer a PlayStation 3 Terrestrial Digital Recorder Pack, made up of the Tivo-style Torne TV recorder and a 160GB black system for ¥36,980 ($421).

Sony has now adopted an “open pricing” policy the current, 120Gb Slim, allowing retailers to decide costing on the SKU, presumably before supplies dry up.

There’s no word on the new models making it out of Japan, and SCEE said it had no announcements to make on the matter today.

It should be noted that the 160GB ¥29,980 yen model is the same price as the 120GB model. It’s therefore a replacement, with the current 120GB and 250GB models certainly set to be phased out in favor of the higher capacities, I believe.

I never ever needed more than 120 gb…who needs a 320 gb hd. Some do obviously. I got no clue for what though. I play games on my consoles and thats it. Don’t like the color but it’s nice to have some variety.

I love that white colour. V.nice. The bigger HDs are a nice size. I upgraded mine to a 500gig one. I don’t really put much on it but it’s nice to just know you’re not going to run out of space and have to sift through and do house work constantly.

well own a 250GB slim and have 100GB worth of movies on my HDD, ranging from animes such as 3×3 eyes to TV series like Dexter to the new blockbuster clash of the…opps! nevermind.

But seriously using your PS3 for just games is almost like owning HDTV without any HD content to watch it on or a 3DTV without the 3D glasses… whats the point right?

Your PS3 is more then just a console to play games on.
My trophy level is 18 by the way so….just dont. Lol

I think the white one looks lovely.

Its obviously a plan to negate the power of the Xbox 360 slim, I’m sure it will work too.

It’s weird, Sony’s slim consoles now have a matte finish, while the new 360s are all shiny. They’ve swapped over. I wonder if they both looked at the other’s console and decided to copy each other!

I’m not sure we’ll see them in Europe just yet. They can barely manage to get the standard black ones on the shelves, let alone adding another SKU to make.

Do they even know how many people want to buy the slims but hate it because it a slim??? If it was white it would make all the difference in the world! As stupid as it sounds most people arent dumb enough to give up their fat backwards for a cheaper version, but if they made it white..it would sell HUGE in the states.
