Killzone 3 – New uber-awesome shots

Awesome is good. Awesome is great. In fact, awesome is, well, awesome. But Killzone 3 awesome?

That’s just dropping the bassline to a whole new level. In a good way.

SCEE’s released eight new shots of the Guerrilla shooter.

It looks properly epic, it has to be said.

The game launches next February for PS3 with added Move support.

    Killzone 3 have sprite explosions – I’m speechless. We are back to the Call Of Duty 2 or Modern Warfare 1-2 era. Congratulations Guerilla Games.

    @2 Modern Warfare 2 uses Old ID Tech 3 and you can’t do something about it.

    It’s a new engine in Killzone 2/3 and they use sprites even on third installment. Hillarious.

    @1, ever even seen any gameplay of this? the details are pretty amazing, even the ocean looks awesome & the jetpacking looks fun, never played much of killzone 2, but it was pretty fun though

    @5 Details are OK, gameplay looks fun, but i’m saying about these screenshots. Look at the explosions. There are Sprites.
    So basically explosions will be only on one angle and in 2D like in the old CoD 2 days :D

    I think this is what they made to achieve decent 3D on the PS3.

    It doesn’t matter what tech they use it’s how it looks and plays that matters. If using sprite explosions give a minor visual fidelity hit but a more consistent frame rate then I’ll take the frame rate thanks. It’s all swings and roundabouts and I thought the vast array of post processing KZ2 did give the game a nice overall coherence missing from a lot of games.

    @7 They made it probably for 3D so it could work.

    sprites look awful. No matter what explosion it will look dated compared to games like Gears, Crysis 2 or Bulletstorm and e.t.c.

    compared to this gen games it’s going to be outdated as hell.
    Maybe they are doing it because of 3D, i don’t know, but sprites are last generation.

    @11 This game requires more luck than skill with it’s absolute SHIT of bullet randomness. Bullets should go where you aim not some crappy scatter effect that simulates a someone that has never shot a gun before. GARBAGE guns

    Bullets do go where you aim, but not all of them. Its so that you cant snipe from across the map with an assault rifle or sub-machine gun, its this little thing called “BALANCE”. I know its rare in FPS’ these days (see CoD).

You need to realise that you should play it before you judge the game because thats how games are supposed to be, you play them (wow i never guessed that) and then gain your opinion on it don’t just criticise it because of a few technical aspects from a game that when they last demoed it was using fucking pre alpha code

    I can’t judge screenshots? I never said that it’s a final opinion on everything.
    On this screenshots i saw only sprites and in Killzone 2 sprites were acceptable, but now, it’s just outdated.
    They have a lot of time till release date, but i don’t think so that they are going to fix it because why they just sent screenshots to show explosions on some site, logic!?!?!? If they will fix them, good for us, if not, shame on them.

    @16 I disagree with this being balance. They should factor in distance then and instead of making them Random and not where you aim, make them less powerful of a shot. That is WAY less frustrating. The Scatter effect is complete garbage in my opinion.

    KZ2 and KZ3 are among the best looking games ever released on a console, sprites or not. It makes no difference.

    The explosions on those KZ3 shots look much more realistic than the linked Far Cry 2 shot, which frankly looks like cartoon fire.

    It’s all irrlevant anyway as screenshots are utterly worthless. Moving images are the one and only way to judge a game’s visuals, unless you spend all your time pausing the game and pixel counting.

    Actually yeah, you are sad enough to do that.

    @29 for fuck sake, read carefully, this has nothing to do with PC. Games like Crysis 2, Bulletstorm (console versions) looks better than killzone 3.
    and it’s not because something looks better, it’s just for this gen, they use 10 year old technology that looks like crap.

    you may have fooled some people in this thread that you actually know what you are talking about but KZ 2 explosions are NOT sprites. They look a little fuzzy because they’re rendered, along with all the particle effects in a 640 * 360 buffer, but sprites they are not.

    Controll discussion: kz 2 was a good game with shit controls. The skill argument is cheap. You are good at fps’s or not. It’s not like if you are good in bc2 you will suck in cod or kz or whatever. I got used to the kz2 controlls fast but still i found them crappy, not accurate enough and unnatural. Still looking forward to kz3 (a little bit)…

    Looks top to me, particularly the bit in the hopper, where there’s, smoke, snow and fire bellowing out all over the place.

    The devs have spoken of featuring a wide range of different locales, so I’m hoping they get to mix up the environments a lot more this time out.

    Yeah, I must admit I’d like to see a bit more contrast in the other levels they’re creating. It can look like a bit of a white wash at times. The Helghast do look fierce against the snowy backdrop though, and I’m really liking the emphasis on melee combat.

    As I say, this and Bulletstorm stole the show for me.

    Don’t like the look of Bulletstorm. Reminds me of a kaleidoscope.

    A desaturated look makes games look better than rainbow-fests IMO.

    @58 I’m still pretty sure there are more than 3 colours on such an oilrig, but I guess the real issue is that they choose that sort of scenery to begin with. Like I said I’m looking forward to something a bit more stimulating.

    Grey is an artistic decision, one which I think most defintely is not paying off.

    Striking use of photorealism and cinematc lighting is what made KZ2 look superb.

    It’s coming. It was supposed to happen in January this year, but didn’t. It’s on a document as “the most requested feature” on the site. I’m waiting to hear back as to when all the broken stuff’s going to be fixed. God willing, I’ll know this week.
