Killzone 3 – New uber-awesome shots

Tuesday, 6th July 2010 17:16 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Awesome is good. Awesome is great. In fact, awesome is, well, awesome. But Killzone 3 awesome?

That’s just dropping the bassline to a whole new level. In a good way.

SCEE’s released eight new shots of the Guerrilla shooter.

It looks properly epic, it has to be said.

You can get ‘em at GamersMint.

The game launches next February for PS3 with added Move support.

  1. Erthazus

you know what? Someone who will say Killzone 3 have amazing graphics need to cut his balls off.

Killzone 3 have sprite explosions – I’m speechless. We are back to the Call Of Duty 2 or Modern Warfare 1-2 era. Congratulations Guerilla Games.

    #1 5 years ago
  2. DrDamn

Errr – back to Modern Warfare 2 era? Last year you mean?

    #2 5 years ago
  3. Gekidami

    Trolls, ignore them.

    #3 5 years ago
  4. Erthazus

@2 Modern Warfare 2 uses Old ID Tech 3 and you can’t do something about it.

It’s a new engine in Killzone 2/3 and they use sprites even on third installment. Hillarious.

    @3 Butthurted fanboys, ignore them.

    #4 5 years ago
  5. Crysis

@1, ever even seen any gameplay of this? the details are pretty amazing, even the ocean looks awesome & the jetpacking looks fun, never played much of killzone 2, but it was pretty fun though

    #5 5 years ago
  6. Erthazus

@5 Details are OK, gameplay looks fun, but i’m saying about these screenshots. Look at the explosions. There are Sprites.
So basically explosions will be only on one angle and in 2D like in the old CoD 2 days :D

I think this is what they made to achieve decent 3D on the PS3.

    #6 5 years ago
  7. DrDamn

It doesn’t matter what tech they use it’s how it looks and plays that matters. If using sprite explosions give a minor visual fidelity hit but a more consistent frame rate then I’ll take the frame rate thanks. It’s all swings and roundabouts and I thought the vast array of post processing KZ2 did give the game a nice overall coherence missing from a lot of games.

    #7 5 years ago
  8. Erthazus

@7 They made it probably for 3D so it could work.

sprites look awful. No matter what explosion it will look dated compared to games like Gears, Crysis 2 or Bulletstorm and e.t.c.

    #8 5 years ago
  9. MushroomStamp

I just hope they fix the crappy control layout and allow it to be customized. Also need to fix the absolute garbage shooting of the guns.

    #9 5 years ago
  10. DrDamn

Didn’t KZ2 use the same method?

    #10 5 years ago
  11. Gekidami

The guns were perfect. I think you just need to gain some skill.

    #11 5 years ago
  12. LePlatypus

    #12 5 years ago
  13. Erthazus

@10 Acceptable at that time. But now it’s the same thing.
compared to this gen games it’s going to be outdated as hell.
Maybe they are doing it because of 3D, i don’t know, but sprites are last generation.

@12 you need a doctor miss.

    #13 5 years ago
  14. Erthazus look here for example and look at the fire particles. Thats not cool at all. – this is the best shot. Look at the 2D explosions.

and look here for example this is THIS generation.

or Far Cry 2 as this gen

    #14 5 years ago
  15. MushroomStamp

@11 This game requires more luck than skill with it’s absolute SHIT of bullet randomness. Bullets should go where you aim not some crappy scatter effect that simulates a someone that has never shot a gun before. GARBAGE guns

    #15 5 years ago
  16. Gekidami

Bullets do go where you aim, but not all of them. Its so that you cant snipe from across the map with an assault rifle or sub-machine gun, its this little thing called “BALANCE”. I know its rare in FPS’ these days (see CoD).

  17. LePlatypus

What you have is a serious case of shut the hell up, you always comment on posts saying loads of technical bullshit no one cares about even though you HAVEN’T played it. You need to realise that you should play it before you judge the game because thats how games are supposed to be, you play them (wow i never guessed that) and then gain your opinion on it don’t just criticise it because of a few technical aspects from a game that when they last demoed it was using fucking pre alpha code

    #17 5 years ago
  18. Erthazus

“don’t just criticise it because of a few technical aspects from a game ”

I can’t judge screenshots? I never said that it’s a final opinion on everything.
On this screenshots i saw only sprites and in Killzone 2 sprites were acceptable, but now, it’s just outdated.
They have a lot of time till release date, but i don’t think so that they are going to fix it because why they just sent screenshots to show explosions on some site, logic!?!?!? If they will fix them, good for us, if not, shame on them.

    #18 5 years ago
  19. LePlatypus

@18 a game out a year ago that is still one of the graphically best games on the market is outdated. I beg to differ

    #19 5 years ago
  20. ivycrew707

Dosen’t matter what it looks like, its not on PC so Erthazus will find something to bitch about. PERIOD.

    #20 5 years ago
  21. LePlatypus

    @20 +1

    #21 5 years ago
  22. MushroomStamp

@16 I disagree with this being balance. They should factor in distance then and instead of making them Random and not where you aim, make them less powerful of a shot. That is WAY less frustrating. The Scatter effect is complete garbage in my opinion.

    #22 5 years ago
  23. Gekidami

No body really cares if it isnt rendering something fully, all that matters is that the end result looks good; And just like KZ2 which also cheated on a few things, it does.

    #23 5 years ago
  24. Aimless

Congratulations, Erthazus, this is a new low even for you.

    #24 5 years ago
  25. theevilaires

    Gekidami said: @9
The guns were perfect. I think you just need to gain some skill.

I agree, when you let 12 year old british kids kick your ass on XBOX live then you really need skills. Mushroomstamp just talks shit cause he knows he sucks.

  26. Gadzooks!

KZ2 and KZ3 are among the best looking games ever released on a console, sprites or not. It makes no difference.

The explosions on those KZ3 shots look much more realistic than the linked Far Cry 2 shot, which frankly looks like cartoon fire.

It’s all irrlevant anyway as screenshots are utterly worthless. Moving images are the one and only way to judge a game’s visuals, unless you spend all your time pausing the game and pixel counting.

Actually yeah, you are sad enough to do that.

    #26 5 years ago
  27. ivycrew707

@26 “Actually yeah, you are sad enough to do that.” Nail in the coffin. I can actually picture this guy doing that.

    #27 5 years ago
  28. Erthazus

“Dosen’t matter what it looks like, its not on PC so Erthazus will find something to bitch about. PERIOD.”

i said nothing about PC. There are tons of this gen games that looks better than Killzone 3 on consoles, like Crysis 2 or Bulletstorm.

“The explosions on those KZ3 shots look much more realistic than the linked Far Cry 2 shot, which frankly looks like cartoon fire.”

You are fucking idiot as always.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. ivycrew707

Dude all you do is dream of how beautiful every game would look on PC….you dont have to mention it, we already know

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Gadzooks!

You just proved my point excellently. You linked a great looking VIDEO of explosions that look shit in SCREENSHOTS.

Screenshots are worthless. You judged KZ3 on screenshots.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. The Hindle

The graphics in KZ are amazing, the gameplay on the otherhand well its just a reskinned Cod.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Erthazus

@30 You still don’t understand why i posted screenshots. It’s not because of beauty.
If you can’t understand that far Cry 2 or Crysis can generate explosions in real time while sprites CAN’T Do that, than i don’t have a reason to talk to you.

@29 for fuck sake, read carefully, this has nothing to do with PC. Games like Crysis 2, Bulletstorm (console versions) looks better than killzone 3.
and it’s not because something looks better, it’s just for this gen, they use 10 year old technology that looks like crap.

    #32 5 years ago
  33. bugmenot

you may have fooled some people in this thread that you actually know what you are talking about but KZ 2 explosions are NOT sprites. They look a little fuzzy because they’re rendered, along with all the particle effects in a 640 * 360 buffer, but sprites they are not.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. LePlatypus

@31 “If you can’t understand that far Cry 2 or Crysis can generate explosions in real time while sprites CAN’T Do that, than i don’t have a reason to talk to you.”

Well thEn (see i can spell then correctly see above) anywho looks like you don’t have a reason to talk to most people on this site then

    #34 5 years ago
  35. Gadzooks!

“If you can’t understand that far Cry 2 or Crysis can generate explosions in real time while sprites CAN’T Do that, than i don’t have a reason to talk to you.”

If you cAn’t underStand that it doeSnt matter How the image is generated as lOng as it Looks good thEn you have no reason to be talking to rational human beings.

    #35 5 years ago
  36. spiderLAW

Dude? Bulletstorm better looking than KZ3??
    Nonsense and a half.
    Bulletstorm looks great though.

    Exactly :)
    Spot on buddy!

    #36 5 years ago
  37. LePlatypus

I bet Erthazus has gone to his cave to wait for another thing to bitch about as usual

    #37 5 years ago
  38. ivycrew707

No, looking for new links of PC games to compare to console

    #38 5 years ago
  39. No_PUDding

This game actually looks mediocre as hell.

    Thanks but no thanks.

    #39 5 years ago
  40. polygem

Controll discussion: kz 2 was a good game with shit controls. The skill argument is cheap. You are good at fps’s or not. It’s not like if you are good in bc2 you will suck in cod or kz or whatever. I got used to the kz2 controlls fast but still i found them crappy, not accurate enough and unnatural. Still looking forward to kz3 (a little bit)…

    #40 5 years ago
  41. Dannybuoy

Well I think it looks incredible. I loved KZ2 so I’m sure to love this.

    #41 5 years ago
  42. No_PUDding

This game just doesn’t look as great as Killzone 2. At all.

This level certainly looks particularly bland.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Robo_1

Holy shit really? Check out the videos then, the picture quality and attention to detail is still pure amaze.

    #43 5 years ago
  44. No_PUDding

Ive seen them, I think anyway.

    #44 5 years ago
  45. Robo_1

Best quality is the gameplay trailer:

Looks top to me, particularly the bit in the hopper, where there’s, smoke, snow and fire bellowing out all over the place.

The devs have spoken of featuring a wide range of different locales, so I’m hoping they get to mix up the environments a lot more this time out.

    #45 5 years ago
  46. Erthazus

@35 and it does not look. Can you understand that? Of course not. Stop posting bullshit as usual.

@SpiderLAW, oh yeah, Killzone 3 looks amazing. Even 2D Backgrounds. AMAZING.

@45 Oh yeah, it DOEs look amazing:

    Bland textures, 2D Backgrounds.
The only good part was the character animation, but thats only it.
and water… WATER… The horror, did you saw a real water in real life? It does not look like that.

    #46 5 years ago
  47. spiderLAW

plus, this is all Alpha build :)
Wait till further in developement and see how good its going to look :)

    #47 5 years ago
  48. spiderLAW

    just leave Erth alone.

Let him get back to his day job. You know, the one where he has his nose stuck so far up Crytek’s ass that he cant tell that KZ3 is obviously amazingly good looking.

    #48 5 years ago
  49. MushroomStamp

TheEvilLiar is broadcasting more personal attacks with no justification. Again he shows his 12 yr old mentally. Nobody said shit to you Liar. Yet you insist on personal attacks and making this site worse for wear. Several people are disgusted with your juvenile behavior and wish you would grow up or just die. Stop being a little prick and making up lies and attacking people that don’t say shit to you. You’re a little punk, the type I would smash if your pussy ass would meet me in real life. You just continue to spread lies and hate and consitantly show your lack of knowledge when it comes to gaming, people, or technology.

One day when they finally have an ignore button, you will no longer be able to converse with anyone because you’re such lying child.

    #49 5 years ago
  50. No_PUDding

Yeah… Is this community is doomed?

Maybe you and whoever else you are imagining can leave and come back when you’ve decided to play like big boys.

As for the video, technically it’s impressive, art direction is where it lost me – personally. Gotta be inside with multiple light sources.

    #50 5 years ago
  51. LePlatypus

Erthazus you see @45 stated his OPINION that is something everyone is entitled to, if he states his OPINION then you cannot have a go at him for it nor criticise it because it isn’t your opinion seriously have you heard of a thing called being social

    #51 5 years ago
  52. cookiejar

    Blimey. Nob head overload!

    #52 5 years ago
  53. TraceableX

    @11: +1

    #53 5 years ago
  54. DeSpiritusBellum

It’s pretty and all, but it’s hard to be impressed when the entire world seems to be the same shade of bluish grey. What’s wrong with just a hint of colour?

I can’t wait for Brink to get here.

    #54 5 years ago
  55. Gekidami

I think -and i might be wrong but bare with me- that snow is white and metal is grey… Just putting that mad idea out there.

    #55 5 years ago
  56. DeSpiritusBellum

@55 So that makes it more stimulating somehow?

I don’t really care if it’s made out of marshmellow and underpants, it still looks incredibly dull.

    #56 5 years ago
  57. spiderLAW

    #57 5 years ago
  58. Gekidami

More stimulating? No. Just more anchored in reality. Then again i’m no specialist on arctic-based oil rigs, i’m just assuming they arent normally covered in disco lights.

    #58 5 years ago
  59. Robo_1

Yeah, I must admit I’d like to see a bit more contrast in the other levels they’re creating. It can look like a bit of a white wash at times. The Helghast do look fierce against the snowy backdrop though, and I’m really liking the emphasis on melee combat.

As I say, this and Bulletstorm stole the show for me.

    #59 5 years ago

Don’t like the look of Bulletstorm. Reminds me of a kaleidoscope.

A desaturated look makes games look better than rainbow-fests IMO.

    More gritty and realistic.

    #60 5 years ago
  61. DeSpiritusBellum

@58 I’m still pretty sure there are more than 3 colours on such an oilrig, but I guess the real issue is that they choose that sort of scenery to begin with. Like I said I’m looking forward to something a bit more stimulating.

    #61 5 years ago
  62. No_PUDding

Realism, isn’t a way to justify grey Gekidami.

Grey is an artistic decision, one which I think most defintely is not paying off.

Striking use of photorealism and cinematc lighting is what made KZ2 look superb.

    #62 5 years ago
  63. tenthousandgothsonacid

Whatever happened to the ‘ignore poster’ feature Pat ?

I could have sworn it was ‘any day now’ several months ago…

    #63 5 years ago
  64. Patrick Garratt

It’s coming. It was supposed to happen in January this year, but didn’t. It’s on a document as “the most requested feature” on the site. I’m waiting to hear back as to when all the broken stuff’s going to be fixed. God willing, I’ll know this week.
