NPD Top 20: Kratos hangs on, ModNation makes appearance

Friday, 2nd July 2010 22:14 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

NPD has released the top 20 software results for May, and it finds Lost Planet 2 taking the number 11 spot, followed by New Super Mario on DS.

Three racers were released in May, none of which lit a fire on the charts. ModNation Racers on PS3 came in at 18, while Split/Second and Blur didnt make an appearance in the top 30 (IGN).

However, both Blur and ModNation Racers were released on May 25 in the US, so the June numbers – expected later in the month -may be a bit kinder to the titles.

Looking over the entire chart, Nintendo walked away the clear winner with nine games on the list -  six for Wii and three on DS.

Microsoft followed with six titles, four of which were in the top 10 tying with Nintendo. Sony had five spots on the chart.

Here’s the full thing, courtesy of Gamasutra:

  1. Red Dead Redemption (360)
  2. Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
  4. UFC 2010: Undisputed (360)
  5. UFC 2010: Undisputed (PS3)
  6. Wii Fit Plus (Wii)
  7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
  8. Alan Wake (360)
  9. Pokemon SoulSilver Version (DS)
  10. Skate 3 ( 360)
  11. Lost Planet 2 (360)
  12. New Super Mario Bros ( DS)
  13. Pokemon Heartgold (DS)
  14. God of War III ( PS3)
  15. Just Dance ( Wii)
  16. Mario Kart, with wheel (Wii)
  17. Super Street Fighter IV ( PS3)
  18. ModNation Racers (PS3)
  19. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360)
  20. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)

Last Night’s NPD results showed industry sales down 10 percent year-on-year in May, and down 5 percent over last month. Total sales came in at approximately $823.5M.

Red Dead Redemption was the clear king of the mountain with 1.5M  units sold across all platforms. Yeehaw, cowboy.

    Not bad from GoWIII.

We’ve usually seen PS3 games plummet out of the top 20 altogether after a month. Maybe GoWIII will be the game that starts bucking that trend.

19 games in list don’t have PC port, it is look like no PC -way to win. Make conclusions, Developers!

I finally finished GOW3 yesterday. It felt kinda strange as I pummeled Zeus’ head repeatedly against the ground as my 4 day old daughter lay there in her Moses basket. She didn’t bat an eyelid though, I had the surround sound on and the PS3′s fans were in overdrive. Amazing amazing game. It deserves to stay in the charts forever!

God of War’s the sort of game you’d pick up if you were buying a new PS3, like something Mario flavoured is if you’re buying a Wii. I can imagine it hanging onto the charts much better than most.

How terrible for Split/Second, Blur et al to be outsold in their first month by stuff that’s been out for years, though. :-(

Sad for Blur and Split Second. Blur in-particular seems to have bombed hard, selling just 31,000 units.

I’m really enjoying the game online, and I’d encourage people to give it a go. Hopefully it’ll have a good long tail performance.

Alan wake did just 145k according to Joystiq, and Gow 3 still in the top 20 i thought it would tbh.

i’d esxpect the only Wii games to ever reach the top are Mario, Zelda & Metroid, *snore, c’mon Nintendo, make an console 3rd party publishers & developers can actually get behind, the 3DS could be good with it’s PSP-like graphics, i’d expect it too be a little better tho, regardless of the 3D effect

Apparently Alan Wake sold 145k and Split/Second sold 86k.

Edit: Sorry, Hindle! I did include a link, though. :-)
