Cage: Sony demand for Heavy Rain Move support scuppered DLC

heavyrain

Sony’s decision to add Move support to Heavy Rain was responsible for halting the game’s DLC production, Quantic Dream’s David Cage has confirmed.

Speaking with NowGamer, Cage said he is disappointed players could not finish the game as was intended by Quantic Dream.

“Chronicles are on hold as all the team is focused on Heavy Rain Move,” he said. “We proposed three episodes about one hour long, focused on the background of the main characters. I thought fans would really enjoy these episodes because they explained many aspects of Heavy Rain and why characters are who they are.

“Unfortunately, Sony preferred to ask us to focus on Move to support the device rather than on creating new content.

“On our side, we did not want to spend more time on Heavy Rain, which would have meant delaying new projects. This is a decision I can understand, and I am certainly happy we had the opportunity to play with this device and to support it, although I am certainly disappointed for fans we could not finish the story of Heavy Rain the way we intended.”

Cage’s comments reflect those made at E3 by studio co-founder Guillaume de Fondaumiere.

There’s no date for the Move-enabled re-release. You can, however, watch the trailer for it here.

That’s a shame, really. Maybe we’ll get more out of Horizon.

I’m smelling bullshit here somewhere. Didn’t Michael Pachter say during a GameTrailers Bonus Round interview, that he has been told by various devs that Move can be comofortably implemented into a game within a six-week timeframe?

I believe he used Socom 4 as an example.

If so, then how the fuck does it take Quantic Dream all that time to implement it into a game which is basically a QTE fest, at the expense of DLC?

It would be all too easy for us to lambast Sony…so let’s.

This is a terrible decision, and given how Heavy Rain has plateaued, it doesn’t make sense to introduce something that existing owners of Heavy Rain are unlikely to purchase.

At least if you introduce new content, you can make the quite credible argument that current owners will want to purchase the DLC because, surprise, it’s new content that they haven’t played, and you’ll make money.

If the Heavy Rain Move patch is free, they’ll make no money; and if it’s an addition both at retail and PSN, they’re likely to make no money, as very few will buy something they already own just to wave their arms about.Personally, I can’t see the addition of Move giving extra sales.

Although I bet the NPD’s when they come will prove me wrong :P

i would give anything to see someone like Rockstar do a game like this, as much as I enjoyed Heavy Rain some of the voice acting and dialouge was awful and I personally think Rockstar/Naughty Dog and Bioware are the best in the business when it comes to things like this.

@3

This could be very wrong, but isn’t it the fact that HR is a QTE fest that makes it more work?

QD will have to remap the buttons again, because AFAIK, the Move controller doesn’t have L1, L2 R1 or R2 buttons. They’d have to go through all the scenes and sub-scenes and find a way to incorporate buttons that the Move doesn’t have.

@Razor: Not to mention that mapping gestures within a certain failure tolerance probably wont be that easy.

Because waggle makes QTEs better.

Ah fair enough folks. I stand corrected :)

Still; DLC > Move functionality

Any chance they’ll clean up some of the funky animation at the same time as adding move?

Haven’t played HR (still waiting for that discount…) but Sony making this a choice between DLC or Move support is definitely disappointing. That said, Move support for HR does something to put actual weight behind Sony’s claim that their new control method doesn’t just amount to a pure casual gaming device (although Heavy Rain’s simplistic gameplay undoubtedly makes it one of the most casual-esque hardcore game ever released).

While I agree that the lack of DLC is disappointing, I have to say that this game was pretty much made for motion controls. I’ll definitely be playing through with Move.

Also, Cage never really seemed too keen on doing the DLC anyway. Any interview you read/watch with him where the DLC is brought up, he gives the impression it was never planned and never thought about.

Motion controls were considered for the early concepts of Heavy Rain. So while it’s easy to have a good moan about how Sony sucks, etc, this was probably the right decision.

@4 – they won’t make money offering a free patch but they will make money selling PlayStation Move controllers. That’s the point. It’s also proved to be a game that “casual” players enjoy, so motion control may just remove another barrier.

Not to mention that they’re re-releasing the game alongside Move.

No DLC? No point in keeping the game!

Will Move support be patched or will you have to buy the game again?

That’s a surprisingly bitter comment from Cage, he’s generally had nothing but praise for Sony up to now. Is the love affair over? Seems odd for Sony to piss him off.

That kind of reads like he doesn’t expect the DLC to arrive at all now rather than it just being delayed. Which would probably go some way to explaining why he’s so annoyed.
