Square: FFXIV Online skipping 360 due to “closed” online environment

Hiromichi Tanaka has said that Final Fantasy XIV Online skipping an Xbox 360 release was due to the console’s “closed” online environment.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Tanaka said that Square and Microsoft could not reach a release agreement because of this.
“The main reason why we couldn’t go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system,” he told the site at E3. “[Live is] different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice.
“Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We’re still talking to… We couldn’t come to an agreement on Xbox Live.”
However, Tanaka believes it’s possible for an MMO to work on DS or PSP.
This isn’t the first MMO to skip out on a 360 release, as Marvel Universe Online, Age of Conan, and Champions Online were all halted for one reason or another.
Still, there’s always the Final Fantasy XI MMO on Xbox 360, and Capcom plans to release Monster Hunter Frontier on it as well.
Final Fantasy XIV Online is slated for PC and PS3 sometime this year.

This is interesting because other mmorpg devs will see this.. and consider since ps3 is an more opened environment then they can come to agreements to release amazing online pc/ps3 games.

@7 dont wish to start arguing but its a shame you’ve come across like that, i’d just like to see the game come to a console, either one as i dont play PC games (although i should)

@6 I’m sorry. That MMORPG will do nothing to Sony and will absolutely never be on PS3 for some reasons.
Sony have their own SOE studios and they won’t even make a port of it’s Everquest I or II successfull title to PS3.
Old Republic cost a lot to port from PC to PS3 same goes to Everquest II for example and there is no guarantee that they will sell or someone will play them.

If The Old Republic turns out to be half as good as what people expect, it will be a major victory for Microsoft to get it on their console. Probably unlikely to happen, though.
Oh, and Microsoft’s closed system sucks, though XBL probably wouldn’t be as good if it weren’t that way.

“there is no guarantee that they will sell or someone will play them”
You could say that for around 90% of the games released the other 10% being call of dutys, fifas, halos, uncharted. If a game has a genuine seal of quality and is marketed right, it will sell.
Star Wars is still a big i.p despite the shitty prequels and all I’m saying is if “I” was head of gaming at Sony I would take a chance and see if it could be done on the PS3 and also drum up interest via blogs and other ways of media to see if playstation players would dig MMORPGS and go on from there to acquire the title for the system.

This, in particular, won’t change anything. PS3 has always been relatively ‘more’ open than the other consoles. Its always been the install base keeping publishers from taking advantage. As that increases, any publisher looking at the console MMO space will have to keep a strong eye on PS3, PSP and the numerous DS iteration.
Still, you’d have to wonder if MMOs are possible on PSP and DS, with their combined install base.a why not make one sooner?

I can see LIVE being opened up soon.
Valve’s reasoning for placing steamworks in the PS3 version of Portal 2 was that ‘the PS3 is the most open console’.
If Sony allows, Valve could port games such as TF2, Counter-strike etc to the PS3 via PSN and utilise steamworks.
I’m sure Microsoft wouldn’t want to lose touch with their once bosom buddy Valve.

That is the exception because that game was on the PS2 and the MS was trying to make a foothold.

Forgive me, but what’s meant by “open” and “closed” online enviorment? Something to do with NAT settings…?
**EDIT**
OH wait, does it mean they wanted PC, PS3, and X360 players to all play in the same online enviorment? That sounds awesome if it is!

@19 – that’s got something to do with that. I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s to do with the way PSN works. From what I understand, Microsoft want full control over everything to do with the online integration of their service. Everything must be Live, etc.
Sony on the other-hand, take a more “do what you want” approach. Obviously it’s not quite as cut and dry, but that’s how I understand it.
That’s why Sony are allowing SteamWorks, and MMOs on the system. Stuff like that.

This definition of open is access control. Everything the 360 user accesses is controlled by MS. Every facet, from DLC to third party ‘apps’ utilizing the internet (Facebook, last.fm) is filtered through them first. No one ever has direct control other than MS.
Obviously, its different on the PS3.

Microsoft really need to change the way they work a bit otherwise they’re going to get left behind on this front. Not that it really matters for FFXIV, but what if this had been a console port of The Old Republic? That’d have been a massive loss!

@32
MS already blew it on the MMO front I think.
Cryptic had an MMO working and practically ready to ship, but they gave up because of this stupid stance by MS.
FFXIV is going to be big I reckon. It will bring mainstream MMO gamers to consoles and MS will kick themselves for not being a part of it.
I expect they will then have one of their ‘exceptions’ and allow the game on 360 but it will be far too little, too late.
The stupid thing is that PSO and FFXI worked just fine on 360, didnt cause the collapse of XBL, the apocalypse, hacking, boils, legions of dead roaming the earth or any other such horrors.
Short-sighted pig-headedness is what it is.

I agree with pretty much all of that apart from the bit about FFXIV being ‘big’. I can’t imagine it expanding the audience any more than FFXI did, especially after FFXIII got up so many peoples’ noses.

Sure it might not be ‘big’ like CoD, but I think it will do a lot better than FFXI for 2 reasons:
1) Online gaming has come a long, long way since FFXI was launched and the cumbersome, long-winded install/update/server model will be greatly streamlined.
2) FFXI for PS2 required a dedicated network adapter, and FFXI for 360 was an upscaled PS2 port. FFXIV is being developed properly.

Hmm, does this mean that Sony has set it easier for developers since multiple MMO titles are coming to the ps3 (FFXIV, DC Universe, The Agency) along with some already released(MAG & Resistance 2).
Does this also mean that the 360 has held back some games like GTA IV, from having a larger amount of people just so they remain similur?

MS is just being such a bunch of jews and yet losing so much money in the process by constantly denying MMOs the time of day on the 360…i love xbl and ms but really fuck you with your cheapskate bs that we have to deal with…and PSN is far inferior 37 its just free so everyone can play that bullshit glorified blu ray player of a system….ms just needs to take their dick out of their ass and start accepting MMOs and quit being a bunch of damn cheap mofos…like idc if I play with PC and PS3 player just quit being so anti-social bitches @ ms and quit trying so hard to be like the Wii eventhough PS3 is doing the same thing…motion controls are useless and fucking pointless get over it…that fad bs will be over with in a year maybe two at the most…
