Kaz Hirai: 3DS technology not precise

kazhirai

SCE CEO Kaz Hirai has downplayed the technology used by Nintendo 3DS, saying it has a “lack of precision.”

Speaking in an interview with Sankei Biz, Hirai feels the tech has limitations.

“Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations.”

Hirai didn’t comment on the 3DS itself as he hadn’t seen the machine, however due to his comments he gave the site indication that Sony would not be utilizing this technology into any future Sony handheld.

When it came to Sony’s own 3D technology for PS3, Hirai’s was more upbeat.

“With such things as a strengthened 3D-compatible software lineup, we aim to increase hardware sales,” said Hirai of the PS3.

The 3DS has not yet been dated for release.

Sony’s PS3 is compatible with 3D games now and will receive a patch later this year to allow it to be compatible with 3D movies.

Thanks, Andriasang

Oh wow, it was of course only a matter of time before someone from Sony would criticize the 3DS. Kaz dude, if i want your kind of 3D, i have to buy a freakin’ expensive 3D tv for it, come on now. Everywhere i hear positive thigns about the 3DS, nothing but positive things.

What does ‘not have high precision’ even mean?

The screens are a decent res (higher than DS) and they successfully deliver a different image to each eye. What more could the 3DS possibly do? How could it be more precise? This tech doesn’t suffer from the lack of brightness you get with glasses based tech (each eye is blanked for 50% of the time).

And Sony precisely lacks an answer to 3DS which now leads the PSP platform to a comfy hole 6 feet under… even with it’s 70 plus games this fall.

Nintendo will yet again laugh to the bank. Kaz looks teary-eyed in that photo, me wonders why? LOL. Who cares if 3DS or Kinect are not 100% accurate , all that matters is how fun the games will be. Sony can keep their precision and lack of creativeness Kaz, all you are doing with move is ripping off the Wii with a splintered product line.

And everybody who doesn’t works for Sony who got hands on time with the 3DS says it’s great. Who to believe…..?

@7: why is he an asshole? He’s absolutely right…maybe you should just relax a little and try to cope with a little sony criticism. No need to call someone an asshole for that kiddo…

This is Kaz if the 3DS is anywhere near the same price as the PSP.

Wasn’t it also said that the graphics of 3DS are the same or better than PSP?

Color me interested in this tech. I am not a handheld fan, but that is another story all together. But I am interested to see what the 3DS can do.

I have no interest in 3DTV however. At this point because of the entry price. A 3DS I can afford as an impulse purchase. A 3DTV requires a tad more … planing to buy.

@ 13

Yes but that was before E3, all those rumors about how it was gonna be like 360/PS3 graphics. Or do you mean recent previews from during E3? The footage of Kid Icarus didn’t show that much of impressive graphics. But the footage i saw of MGS3 was pretty damn impressive.

Oh for Christ’s sake, what an embarrassing statement to make. If I were a Sony guy, I’d feel like a massive tit making a statement like that.

But maybe it’s essential PR smack talk. I don’t know how these things work.

What does he even mean by ‘high precision’?

It’s a bit tricky to say exactly what he meant for any of us as it’s a quote taken out of context with the source in Japanese – anyone even know what the question was? He isn’t even talking specifically about the 3DS he’s talking about internal Sony tests with similar tech presumably – he says he hasn’t seen a 3DS.

As to what lacking precision means? Maybe the fact you need to be head on with the display and at a consistent distance other wise the 3D effect starts to fail. Or the fact it works best with bright colours and has ghosting with less bright colours.

All current 3D tech has upsides and downsides.

Amazing how he bashes the 3DS, and boosts the 3D on the PS3.
Nintendo has a device which runs 3D without any additional hardware. If you want 3D on a PS3, you first gotta buy a £1500 TV, and put on some ugly sunglasses :P
